I’m counting a lack of blinding people with venom as a Christmas Miracle. ;P
-EDIT- Made some post-release modifications to the strip. The changelog is as follows:
- Modified lighting in Panel 1
- Fixed consistency issue with Todd’s collar
- Added texturing to backgrounds
- Added character shading to Todd and Selkie
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Baby steps. ๐
I wonder how big of a mischievious team they’d be together.
Oh, I’m sorry you put that thought into my head. Now I’m wondering about Truck, if they ever teamed up. Selkmanda would rule the schoolyard with an iron hand. Possible titles;
The good, the bad, and the vanquished
Fist full of Salmon
For a few salmon more
My favorite year(at school)
Bad girls
When Selkie met Amanda
Oh, I’m sorry you put that thought into my head. Now I’m wondering about Truck, if they ever teamed up. Selkmanda would rule the schoolyard with an iron hand. Possible titles;
The good, the bad, and the vanquished, For a Fist full of Salmon, For a few More Salmon, My favorite year(at school), Bad girls, When Selkie met Amanda, Selkie; The Last Water Bender, and the surprise hit; “Finding Amanda”
On Frozen Pond
The Jungle-gym Book
Schooltopia
The Secret Life of Students
Amanda Vs. Selkie: Dawn of Just Us
all hail selkmanda!
my favourite out of the above is The good, the bad and the vanquished – tag line: we came, we fought, we spit….
also, for a fist full of salmon is a close second ๐
and yeah, of course once the combine their powers, theyยดll move beyond scary to downright terrifying. even truck will pee his pants at a mere glare!
Actually, after the events surrounding the last time we saw Truck, when we realized he was just a kid who wanted to be liked, and had an abusive home-life under his overbearing father…. I’ve been hoping to see Selkie spark a friendship with him.
Truck wasn’t abused. He was overindulged.
His father set a poor example by blindly defending his actions and bullying school staff, rather than actually keeping track of what his son was doing. Because Mr Trunchbull threw his weight around to make people do what he said, Truck thought it was perfectly ok to do the same thing.
The realization that he was the “bad guy” came as a legitimate shock to him.
Overindulgence is a form of abuse. It’s just not one commonly thought of as abusive.
In the Harry Potter books, Dudley was as harmed by his parents as Harry was, just in a different way. It did him no favors to be brought up a brat, and had the potential to utterly wreck his adulthood.
The key role of parents is turning children into competent adults who can deal with the adult world on their own terms. An overindulged child does not learn the skills necessary to do this — including patience, humility, respect for authority, ability to put off short-term pleasure for long-term gain, ability to subdue one’s own appetites, etc. So it’s just as bad as neglect, and leaves behind a handicapped adult.
You don’t have to be a perfect parent to be an unabusive one, but you certainly need to do more than just making sure the kid is happy 100% of the time. The adult world certainly won’t give them that privilege.
No, the tag line should be: Good, bad, we’re the ones with the Truck.
Loki: I have an army.
Tony: We have a Selkmanda.
Would Amanda be the one to swing Loki around like a ragdoll or Selkie? XD
Principal Baggins: I have an army.
Selkmanda: We have a Truck.
Actually, I would back Truck in that fight any day.
Why be sorry? That’s awesome. =D
Actually, it strikes me that while Selkie can have an amazing array of defenses, she doesn’t have a vindictive bone in her body and really what she does want – is to get along. That’s not saying she’s passive – she’s got a nice amount of assertiveness, and she is a child – so active is her default setting.
I’m gonna disagree with the lack of vindictiveness, given how she dealt with Truck and a couple other moments that I vaguely recall. And I question the “just wants to get along” as potentially a human reading of an alien character who, being based on a predator, may not actually be able to have that baseline personality.
However, she does seem to enjoy the more positive side of assertive mindset, not the negatives. And she doesn’t seem to need to position herself above others to feel content, which differentiates her from Amanda right now.
Truck was actively still a threat, and was still hurting her friends though. Same with some of the others – they still were hurting others, and she definitely has a strong protective streak. Still I think she enjoyed getting back at some of them for that. Like any kid (or adult) would. But she doesn’t hold a grudge – she was willing to talk with Truck at least after it was all over.
I think her behaviour is invective of her being from a social species. Regardless of being primary meat eaters the aggression of a meat eating animal can usually be linked to there social structure not there diet. She is a social animal just like a human. We eat meat and have hunting built into our DNA just as much as she dose, we just use tools where she has things built into her body.
Dave, I just noticed a slight error.
Todd’s jacket collar has changed since the last time he put it on. https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie819/
I thought you’d want the heads up.
Oops, uh… yeah. Did not check myself; have proceeded to wreck myself. ๐ก
He *is* at his parent’s house – he probably just grabbed an old one of his that’s similar. Even mature adult family members leave a few things laying around other family’s homes – esp. if adult only has an apt. and said family has 2 story house (at least it looks like from outside)…
Right?
Awww<3333
Good end! I wonder what comes next??
I’ve actually heard “she makes me want to spit poison” before, but not from someone who could actually do it.
Fa la lalala, fa la la la!
Woahhhh I’m loving that background. The depth looks so realistic! I’m also diggin the use of thin/thick lines. I was taught to use thicker/darker lines for close-up stuff, whereas things far away have thinner/lighter lines. Your purple truck really brings out the background.
Was Todd’s hair blue when this started? I forget…
Yup – there was a hair-dyeing party when the girls went rainbow.
Yep, Todd’s hair has been blue since they arrived at Mari and Theo’s house for Christmas.
Hey, kudos to Amanda. She hit the “no face poison spit” milestone.
Best part of this is Selkie’s cute little expression in panel 3, which communicates pretty clearly: “I know exactly what you’re gonna say. I *was* a good girl, wasn’t I. I stayed out of the way on purpose so you could do your biological-family stuff. Now I’m happy you’re happy.”
Not even spit poison at her? Wow, that’s some true christmas spirit Selkie’s got there. ๐
