Thank you all again for your patience with my sick day on Monday. Dayquil and Mucinex is helping.

Fanart update! Kristine Melendez shared this on the Selkie facebook page:
Thank you so much! It’s cute! 😀
Let the savaging of dead trees commence.
I just realized that “Sweet” won’t have the same connotations with Selkie as it would with the rest of us; things that are sweet are not delicious and good for her.
I probably eat only slightly less meat than she (though I eat many more vegetables) and I still use “sweet” in a positive way… and I don’t really like sweet foods (but they won’t harm me unless I eat too many).
Ah, social vernacular.
I wonder if I can popularize “meat” in the place of “sweet”?
The term “sweet” probably doesn’t have the same connotations in the Sarnothi language, agreed. But Selkie spent her formative years learning what laughably passes for English in an American environment, so that’s where she derives her cultural context, metaphors and similes.
Agreed.
I pretty much dislikes sweets, most fruits, all that, but I still use it as an expression for something unexpectedly positive.
Salty to me is a very good thing (delicious), but that’s not how it’s used in popular language. Same with sour, but I enjoy sour tasting things much more than sweet tasting things. Bitter as well, though maybe I don’t enjoy bitter as much as umami (meat), salty, and sour.
Language is weird like that. The tastes I most enjoy are not related to positive expressions, while one of my less favorite tastes is. The same is true for Selkie.
Growing up around humans who use such phrases, it just sorta gets absorbed. Like my brother in law, who had no idea he was cursing after coming from Indonesia to San Francisco as a teen and learning the language amongst his peers. He’d say things like, “What the **** do you mean I’m ****ing cussing?” without realizing what he’d picked up. Fascinating…
Literally the word “meat” wouldn’t work because it’s too solidly a noun, but if you found a related adjective like “meaty” or “tender” or “savory” (although the meaning is already starting to drift as I find poor synonyms) you could theoretically get one of them to catch on. I mean, I have my doubts since those don’t sound very catchy, but all you need is a context in which they make sense you can reference back to, and then to get a sufficient number of people using it naturally that it spreads. Not an easy process to force, but technically not impossible.
I will shout “umami!” in glee whenever something cool should happen.
Hey! You’ve probably already noticed by now, but I realized that in Panel 2 it reads “This year has been truly remarkable OR us.” Wanted to point that out for you if you hadn’t noticed yet.
Ah, childhood. When your biggest issues are Christmas loot and self-inflicted death chills playing in the snow. I love your work, Dave.
The fan art is too cute for words.
Awww thanks Koms. I appreciate the comment. Maybe I’ll submit another fanart if this one becomes popular and if I get any request.
Love the eyes!!
Thank you ☺☺☺☺
Glad you’re feeling better, Dave:) I did want to mention something about the comic: The significant others of Marta and Antoine look so much alike and are wearing almost identical clothes that at first I thought you drew Antoine’s s.o. twice, once with his hand in Antoine’s and once with a hand on Marta, and I was like, “Whoa! I would NOT let my husband or boyfriend touch my sister like that!” before I realized they were two different people. THEY aren’t brother’s are they? Similar facial hair, choice of sweaters, hair styles… Is possible, no? Oh, don’t tell me they are dating TWINS??!
Yeah at this point I’m gonna need a family tree sketch.
great words theo! especially since he made no difference whatsoever between the girls, i´ve got a feeling this christmas will go a long way to end their enmity. also, love the background behind the girls, and of course the fan art. yay for uber-cute chibi selkie!
Heh, it’s been almost a year since my version of them celebrating their first Christmas: https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie-hiatus-3-kilyle
Now that Theo’s brought them all together, seems like it’s really feeling like an actual Christmas. Finally 😀
Between this and the snow we had last week and the candy canes my brother handed me when I picked my nephew up, and Kingdom of Loathing running Crimbo content, and a few listens to “Don’t Shoot Me Santa”…… I think I just need to grab a new copy of the Sawyer Brown Christmas album (since I can’t find the one I already own) for this to feel like a really complete season ^_^
Did I miss Martha announcing she’s pregnant?
…what? No, Theo just means that in the spring when she gets married, her new husband will officially be a son, part of the family.
Ah alright, guess that’s just a language thing then.
I love this family <3
Possibly cutest Amanda ever in the 2nd last panel.
…
…
…although, to be fair, she spends a lot of her time scowling, so cute frames are at a premium.
