The hair looks Dash-ing.
I haven't really drawn much "winter-wear" thus far in the strip's long (in real time) winter because I kind of figure they have a good cold tolerance in Wisconsin, and the last few winters in the real world have been fairly mild, so I outfitted people accordingly for a not-all-that-harsh winter. But today seemed like a good day to finally put a damn hat on everyone.
Uuh… she pretty much invited herself. Guess Todd didn’t give them the whole story. At least they are aware she’s coming, though!
THEIR HAIR
I LOVE IT
Me too, though personally I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see them actually hanging out and dying hair… :'(
I was also eager to see that too
Maybe we’ll get the hair-coloring scene as a flashback? We can hope…
I kind of feel like maybe I should have done that, if nothing else it would have pushed the story arc a bit closer to ACTUAL Christmas. But the rainbow-hair thing was mostly a fun spontaneous idea I had, it wasn’t meant as a lead-in to it’s own adventure.
Guest art idea! 😀
That’s what we writers tell ourselves but what the story wants, the story gets… *ominous bg music*
I like how despite both having rainbow hair, Selkie chose horizontal stripes while Amanda got vertical, so they’re both being a bit different from each other. I actually think the vertical stripes on Amanda’s hair looks a lot better, though.
No Stocking for Andi, though… Won’t go unnoticed to be sure. Amanda is going to charge in in defense of Andi.
let her. I wanna see what happens.
To be fair, it may well have started as an honest mistake. Nobody except Andi thought that Andi would be coming until, IIRC, two days ago. If Mari is anything like my mother and grandmothers, she does most of her cooking the day before. She may well have been so busy cooking that she didn’t really have time to run out and get another stocking.
And if she had, it almost certainly would not have had Andi’s name on it. One does not simply find personalized stuff for creatively spelled names. It has to be specially made. So Andi would have been a little left out either way.
You’re right, though, that it won’t go unnoticed. Even understanding at some level all of the above, Andi will probably be a little hurt. And Amanda, having little to no understanding of all of the above, will be borderline livid, I think. Time to start making some popcorn. 🙂
Oh my god, yes I love grandma so much right now.
wanna bet she´ll find a way to let andi know how she feels about her being here without little ears realizing whats going on? (almost) mom-in-laws are scary that way
LOVE Selkie and Amanda’s new rainbow hair! ^^ Incidentally a friend of mine dyed her hair rainbowy the same way Selkie’s looks a while back!
I appreciate Theo gently reminding Mari to be careful with her words around Amanda.
And Selkie, it won’t help Selkie’s relationship with Andi, OR Amanda to see Mari dissing Andi. There is enough acid between those two for a vinegar works.
Poor Andi.
Poor Andi for forcing herself in to a family Christmas celebration, ignoring pretty much everyone elses comfort and feelings for her own. Yes, poor poor Andi. *sarcasm*
They’re so adorable! I can’t pick who’s hair I like more. So I won’t. They’re both too awesome. :3
Oh Mari. If only she got warned ahead of time.
Never mind they did. But I get why she’s mad.
It wasn’t that much notice, but I’m glad they got it.
I get why she’s mad too, but a bit of a short notice is better then no notice at all.
I love their hair!
And my daughter saw and now wants her hair dyed as a mix between the two, but no green. Apparently, she and green are on the outs this week.
I have to ask… how? How do you combine a horizontal rainbow with a vertical rainbow? Is it going to be rainbow plaid?
…
… I have just decided I must develop rainbow plaid because rainbow and plaid are both awesome.
trying to dye this would be a nightmare!

Maybe half her hair would be done horizontally and the other half vertically?
Diagonal?
Your daughter might also like the imgur post that inspired the whole rainbow hair thing, then!

… If I didn’t hate having long hair, I would totally do that.
I like that uneasy half-smile Andi’s got going on. I feel it shows she has realistic expectations of the day, not a deluded ‘all sunshine puppydogs and rainbows’ situation where she expects everyone to forgive everything for the holidays (or forever) purely because it’s the holidays. She knows how deeply she’s hurt these people, she knows she probably can’t make up for it, and she knows the wounds are still so fresh that tonight is probably not going to be entirely pleasant for her.
I like it too. She is mostly there for Amanda because it is her first christmas. But on a side note I love the hair! Its so much fun!
To be fair, there’s going to be puppy dogs at any rate. Hopefully running distraction for Amanda.
Clyde’s not a puppy.
She called him a puppy. That’s good enough to distract her.
All dogs are puppies at heart still…plus dear god he has energy! Yay for puppies
My dog is about 5 years old, a boston terrier welsh corgie mix and let me tell you, along with being a cute little guy, he’s still extremely puppy like. He would be with Clyde running to the door barking.
Can’t wait to see all the Color Commentary that we’ll be getting over the next couple of days…
Shhh… the wrong ears may hear… we need to wait until the kids are not around to REALLY here the ColorFUL Commentary… 😀
Love seeing the girls both happy together. 😀 Their hair is really cool! Hope the adults drink just enough egg nog to chill out a little bit.
I don’t know. I’ve heard alcohol makes you honest.
I think it should be okay; egg nog is not particularly strong.
Depends a lot on who’s making the egg nog and what it’s been made with. I’ve had some that’s gotta be in the 20-40 proof range.
One of my buddies basically mixes his egg nog 90% bourbon 10% nog. Just like every drink.
Egg nog can put you away depending on the guy making it.
For holidays, I make a bitchin’ Bourbon mashed sweet potato recipe. Kids usually hate it, but no adults can resist it. The secret? Not letting the Bourbon totally bake out. XD
I NEED this recipe! Please!
That’s why I say *just enough*. 😉
There is a thin line between pleasantly blitzed and angry drunk for many people (I myself tend to cross more from blitzed to sick too quickly to go there). Plus…you know? Cookies. Happy happy sugar, carbs and endorphines. 😀
Christmas in August! Must be either (a) a *very* long story arc, or (b) some of ’em work in retail sales…
Every time I walk into a store in mid August and find them starting to stock Halloween stuff on the shelves, I find myself suddenly having trouble disagreeing with those wishing for the downfall of Western civilization.
There isn’t really any big holiday in between now and then. So, it kind of makes sense. What’s really horrible is when you start seeing Santas in store windows before Halloween has come and gone.
try living in a country where halloween isn´t all that big – we´ve had the first grinning santa´s appear at the end of august(!!) last year.
I actually feel a very… kind of a weird disconnected “shit be bonkers” vibe about it. On the one hand, Christmas is simply where the internal calendar of the story and the comic’s world is at right now, so that’s what’s going on in the character’s lives. But on the other hand, it’s freaking AUGUST and I’m drawing snow and wreaths and presents and it feels very weird.
Think of it this way… You’re not too far ahead of the stores. As of next week, you’ll start to see some Christmas decorations up around here. The back to school ones were up on the 4th. Halloween has already started. Nothing is sacred in advertising!
Should also mention… Unlike the advertisements, I actually like your Christmas in summer story. 🙂
Hey, I am doin the same for Shards right now! And psycho ghost clothing that ate Cinderella and other weird things!
For some of you who are annoyed with Christmas coming earlier and earlier, feel free to read B: or How The Bogeyman Didn’t Save Christmas by Jessie Talbot. Spoiler alert, some of the other holiday icons are getting a little tired of Santa’s encroachment on their holidays.
Was going to object to “Wisconsin cold tolerance”, but you made a valid point about the last few winters being very mild. Mostly, if you’ve lived in Wisconsin long enough, you know how to bundle up in layers. And “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes. It will change… again.”
I see what you did there Dave. I see all.
And so we begin. I got a tooth yanked so I can’t have popcorn, but everyone who can, get your bowls out, it’s going to be a bumpy show.
Ice cream for you! 🙂
I gotta say, I like Amanda’s choice in how to to rainbow her hair better.
“But today seemed like a good day to finally put a damn hat on everyone.”
ooooh you teasing SOAB you, WE WANNA SEE THE RAINBOW HAIR!!!!
I have to admit, “Why do you hate joy?” is one of the more epic shots fired I can think of, ever.
Agreed. XD
Ugh, frickin’ ratdog. Yippy piddly abominations, the lot of ’em.
I’d give you a thumbs-up if I could. Just wanted to let you know.
Hrm. Rehash of Selkie’s entrance to the orphanage, roles switched? This could be an interesting learning experience.
HOLY FRACKAS THEY BOTH HAVE RAINBOW HAAAAIIIIIR
Peace on Earth, Marigold. Andi clearly has no delusions, not after Todds hard words with her. For Amanda’s sake, shove that passive-aggressive behavior in the closet for now
Look at those smiles. Especially, Amanda’s in such a delighted mood! It seems getting rainbow hair together has done the relationship with Selkie a lot of good. Brilliant idea of Todd’s!
She has been happy together with Selkie. They’ve crossed a line — they are sisters. There’ll still be rivalry, I’m sure, but it looks like they’ve taken a big step forward.
Every time that dog barks, I always think it sounds like a high school cheerleader.
As soon as the kids are asleep, things are going to go south. But first, CHILDREN TOGETHERNESS!
And it looks like Todd at least gave some basic warning. “Amanda’s first Christmas with the family including meeting her aunt and uncles for the first time” probably is going to be fairly overloading, so giving her the extra parent is admittedly not a bad idea.
Just. Yeah. Also a crapshow waiting to happen for various reasons.
