Andi has an entire basket devoted to hair dyes, so there’s plenty of experimentation time ahead.
I decided awhile ago that getting a haircut would be a good move for Andi with the new phase of life and everything, but waffled a bit on the style. Almost went with a shaved-sides floppy-mohawk.
When I hit 30, I decided the same thing and went with short hair. Granted, my hair wasn’t as crazy as Andi’s, and I am a guy, but I can see this new attitude.
I JUST shaved my “shaved-sides floppy-mohawk” three days ago lol! Shaved it all off to let it grow in even. Stupid work hair requirements…!
I used to have a goatee about three inches long, until my current job. During the interview my then-future employer looked me over and said, “Would you consider losing the beard?” I wanted the job, so it was gone that night.
Curious, what is your job if you don’t mind saying? Can’t think of many positions where beard would be an issue so I find asking you to get rid of it kind of shitty and borderline discriminatory.
Razor salesman.
Bravo sir, bravo
Let me tell you the story about how Bearded Steve, the paper shredder operator, became Chinless Steve.
OK, that’s a specific reason to ban _long_ beards, and also long loose hair, necklaces, and certain kinds of clothing. I can see that. I’ve worked on electrical equipment most of my life, so I don’t wear rings (a metal band drastically lowers skin contact resistance so a mild shock can turn into electrocution), and my wristwatches have always been cheap plastic-faced ones with a nonconductive band that I can break off if it gets caught.
A ban on short beards isn’t for safety. It might be for sanitation in the case of a medical worker. A labworker might be required to cover the head and shave all hair that can’t be covered so dandruff and hair isn’t falling into the samples. And finally, one reason most military services ban beards is that a gas mask can’t seal to a bearded chin.
But most of the time, a ban on beards is just about appearance.
Most security companies have rules against beards.
so does Disney. one of my cousins worked there and that clause was actually written into the contract… employees must have no facial hair. I’m pretty sure that he said that it covered even small Hitler style mustaches as well… also other clauses like: no tattoos, and i think even a ban on jewelry in odd places, like nose rings and those earrings? that are stuck in the middle of your cheek bone…
I work for a local area multimedia company doing videography work. Transfer VHS tapes to DVD, rent equipment, set up on-site shoots, etc. The bosses are an 85 year old couple and they’re very old-fashioned in a lot of ways. The Mrs. doesn’t like facial hair, and it didn’t bother me enough to make a fuss about it. I didn’t have any special attachment to the goat. *shrug*
Myself would have turned that down on principle then, probably. But just curious, if you aren’t upset over it I won’t make a fuss on your behalf. 😉
I ran into that when I was a yearbook photographer. Very restrictive company, but with schools there’s already usually a heavy dress code imposed on the kids and teachers so I could see why the company required it of its employees.
A friend’s hubby has a beard he’s been growing since high school (I’m guessing about 17 or more years). He’s a mechanical engineer.
Andi is taking responsibility for her life and actions. Todd has a job and a family. Both have matured in the last nine years. They were “tight” once. Could it happen again?
No Todd, don’t fall for it!
That said the haircut does look good, much better than what she had before. Just get rid of the green and it’s perfect.
It’s probably just for Christmas. Ya know. Red and green. X3
Perfect for you. I think it looks great and love to see people experimenting with candy colors.
Just make sure beforehand that human hair dyes won’t cause bad reactions.
That’s an obvious even if you don’t have a sarnothi daughter. 🙂
What’s with the weird outlines lately? They seem really inconsistent.
I think it’s because of computer issues but I agree nonetheless.
I preferred Andi with long hair but I’d need to see more of this new hair style and see it in the regular art style to really judge it.
Todd is right, Selkie wont want to cut her hair like Andi’s when she realizes it will show off her lack of ears.
I hated Andi’s old haircut, looked like a troll doll.
I agree. I meant the way it looked at the art show.
I had to do a couple strips with pen-and-paper inking when my computer died on me and while it’s back up and running now, I decided I felt like continuing with pen-and-paper outlines for a bit.
No immediate denial no-you-can’t, but a well worded “Let’s be sure about things before you follow through on a decision you may well wind up regretting badly tomorrow and will be horrified to learn you can’t take back.
Yes! Great parenting move.
Epic hair is epic. :3 It looks so awesome.
You are using that word incorrectly and deluding it’s value.
…..you’re a funpire.
And you’re using deluding incorrectly….
Unless. perhaps, JarMan is a neolexic and creating an entirely new word where delude is an active verb meaning to take the play value out of something as opposed to a passive verb meaning to be fooled? (Actually I think it was just a typo for “diluting”.)
Yeah, hurray for auto correct and cell phones.
Still.. Stop using epic for everything. God dammit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG_k5CSYKhg
Imma just leave that there.
I hate the new hairstyle. It’s a feminine version of how I style my hair and now I keep picturing myself with a bolt of green hair. This disturbs me greatly.
Best Epic in the thread. +1 for FNM.
There always needs to be more FNM. Every subject demands it.
Oh absolutely.
One of my favorite songs ever, though admittedly if I lived someplace with a classic rock station (we have two radio stations here, neither is rock) where is was played every hour, I can totally see how one might grow weary of it. It is the epitome of the music scene for that time.
Everyone knows it just means great, cool or awesome nowadays, nothing wrong with that choice of words here.
No. Stop trying to ruin my fun.
Epic irritation at epic word usage is epic.
Win. 😀
Let’s do something epic and see how much epic uses of the word epic I can do in this epic sentence until the word epic looks epically weird. Hmm, now epic looks weird to me.
Epic count: 8 EPIC! Oops, 9
Epic epic bo-bepic,
banana-fana-fo-fepic…
mi-my-mo mepic,
epic.
bet you’re fun at parties
Andi looks so cute with short hair!
I recently cut my hair very short, but because it is curly, I look like a flapper. This isn’t a bad thing, though it was not what I intended it to look like.
I sure wish I could dye my hair, though. My work has a very strict “Only natural hair colors” policy, and bubblegum pink would not fly.
Indeed.
Though I will admit to having a bit of a bias when it comes to short hair.
I love the new hair cut. It looks really awesome on her. Yeah I’m Andi’s age and reciently went with a perm. Its so fluffy now
Excellent hair! So symbolic of her letting go and growing. I wonder if Selkie will get a new look, too (though her hair is cute)?
Awwww, let her try it, Todd. It’s just hair! It grows back. 😉
Try playing with her hairstyle? Sure, why not?
But he does have a point that doing things on the spur of the moment tends to have results that vary between “not what you thought you were getting and “outright bad,” and that maybe she should take a few days and think about what she’d actually like to do, that would fit her, rather than just copycatting what she thought looked cool, but might not actually be her.
Also, as someone pointed out above, Selkie might not realize that such a hairstyle would show her lack of “proper” ears. And we’ve seen already how she feels about showing that. (On the other hand, having it happen because of a hairstyle that she deliberately chose might be a good way for her to get past that. But still, it should be discussed.)
There’s another issue at hand. Most dyes are plant based, so there might be health reasons at stake. This is something that should be discussed with their friends because the last thing Selkie needs is to be having a fun time, and then bam, the dye starts hurting her.
Peanut allergies are horrifying, this has the potential to be worse.
This is a good point. Dye should always have a skin sensitivity test on first-time users. Of course, a way around it is to not dye to her scalp. My daughter was inspired by the book Roller Girl (main character bleaches and dyes her hair blue). She’s only 7 so the deal is I’m going to bleach the tip of her long hair and dye it magenta. This way neither the bleach nor dye touch her scalp and we have the option to cut it off later if necessary (she’s lucky she’s homeschooled and our “dress code” is lenient).
Hmmm, Selkie seems to like Andi’s new style or the thought of getting a new style… and Andi seems to be digging it too…
PREDICTION: Andi and Selkie start getting a little chummy over talking about it, then incoming Amanda explosion about Selkie trying to steal her mom and dad.
HOPEFUL PREDICTION: Todd notices and starts to focus his attention on Amanda before it goes too far, giving Amanda a chance to bond with Todd. (maybe over the nails she wanted to show off)
This isn’t the first time they’ve been friendly with each other. It makes me think all the more (along with Todd’s eyes at Andi) that Todd and Andi could possibly end up back together before the end of this strip—or they may at least give it a go and stay friends. But Selkie is definitely going to bond with Andi. It kind of makes me think of the whole village raising a child saying…along with the idea of the child raising (bringing together) the village.
It’s pretty impossible to tell Andi’s gender here. Is that intentional? Your faces are simple and ungendered enough that they all look androgynous, really, and the only thing that hints is her tiny bit of chest in the second panel. I think it might be a good idea to work on diversifying faces a bit. Not to say everyone has to have a very obvious gender in their face, but in real life, faces *do* tend to look what we consider masculine or feminine. It’s not common people look like “the other gender.” I feel like it should be a deliberate character decision if Andi does, not just how your art pans out.
She looks pretty feminine in the second panel to me with her pose and her long legs (those are not boots for manly men). The next panel is harder to tell, but I’ve seen women with longer faces like that. Andi’s design has always seemed to suggest she is a very tall woman and has a long face.
“It’s not common people look like “the other gender.” ”
Do you live somewhere that is a small town or not know a lot of people (I’m being serious—not sarcastic here)?
There are many men and women who straddle or cross over the gender lines who are CIS and straight. And in the the LGBT community it is all the more so (speaking from experience—I’m bi).
Andi doesn’t seem to be striking me as “cross dressing” here or even coming off as a “Tom Boy.”
I live in a big city. Also I’m bi.
In general the number of people who look ambiguous in sex (I should’ve said sex to start with, sorry) aren’t nearly as high as those who don’t. Humans do have sexual dimorphism.
Even if a woman chooses a societally masculine hairstyle, her face will usually be differently structured than your average man’s. Even women with less pronounced hips and breasts will usually register to a first pass as female. Notice how hard trans people have to work to pass — this is part of the reason why.
Anyway, Andi not registering as female isn’t bad; I just wanted to make sure it was a character decision, not an artifact of art style.
Also note: yes, you are right, there are many who don’t register as one sex or their birth sex. Statistically they are not even close to a majority.
I love the ink outlines. I think they look great.. your experimenting with the thick/thin-ness of the lines views very nice when portraying shadow-light contrast 🙂
I myself love Andi’s hair. Then again if my hair covers my neck I can barely stand it. ^^”’ I had long hair all my life, and quite frankly I hated it. So I started cutting it short when I was 19. Hell I feel MORE feminine with short hair! I mean a lot of people make too big a deal about hair. I’m even thinking of giving myself a buzz cut to get through summer.
Hair is hair, and it grows back if we don’t like the way it looks.
yep, you know what they say the difference between a Good haircut and a Bad haircut is?…
About two weeks! 😀
The advantage of having low testosterone: male pattern baldness doesn’t affect you.
The disadvantage of testosterone replacement therapy: male pattern baldness makes up for lost time.
So, I’m probably going to have a crew cut or shaved head for the rest of my life. Oh well.
I prefer Andi’s new hair style. It makes her look less like a Conehead.
Hair today, gonzo tomorrow.
I love Andi’s new hair! Apparently Todd does, too (here come the shippers). XD
I can relate to Andi’s dilemma. I bought some beautiful magenta dye to put some streaks in my hair and have given up, because I have no idea where I should highlight first. I’m using it on my daughter’s hair instead. XD
