his face in the last panel xD
the face of pure disbelief and anger, i also love benny in the third panel omg he looks so smug. i hope selkie wont get too badly in trouble though :c blame it on uh… tehk, for provoking her
Yeah benny’s smug face is pretty much my favorite haha
Blame it on whoever expected a kid to keep a secret.
Since Selkie is also a civilian and stuff, is there even anything that would legally keep her from revealing everything?
Not just one kid either, but a whole population of them…
Mikael, Currently in the united states if you are a civilian even if you do not hold a clearance for certain things its illegal for you to know them even if its public. IF you do hold a clearance its illegal for you to talk about things that everybody knows Even if its on Wikipedia. I can tell you I know absolutely nothing about multiple Lost nuclear weapons on US soil even if there is a wiki about such things. I can also tell you I am not allowed to read specific parts of WikiLeaks because I am not cleared to see the data within said WikiLeaks. And I am just a civilian contractor. If you were to figure out how to say Develop a nuclear weapon as a civilian. (which has been done) the information is secret EVEN if you got all of your information publicly. Security Clearances are weird.
Counterpoint: “abilities of my race” cannot reasonably be classified information. they should have briefed Selkie’s teachers, if not the whole faculty, that she could do what she can do.
Heck, if I were in charge, Selkie’d get ‘personal development’ time similar to a speech therapy class or an A.P. Student’s meeting to practice her skills. Every student needs space and time to improve ALL their abilities, not just their knowledge.
then again, that may be just a little bit too Montessori for a public school. 😛
There’s your first problem! You assume that ‘reason’ and ‘classified’ are allowed to interract!
@Kestrel. Are you suggesting that Selkie tell Todd she’s sorry, but she had a ‘Tehk-nical’ problem at school?
You Mina tell me it wasn’t entirely her fault?
Well, she wouldn’t have if she weren’t behaving like a Todd-ler.
i cant decide if i should be disappointed or highly amused by these puns….. you all get 10/10 for being horribly fantastic
Er, …. OR: they were Fantastically Horrible. That old saw cuts both ways, like in the old, old, cartoons about lumberjacks, with the pull-me push-you saws. Or was that push-me pull-you? Either way she tries to Doctor the truth, it will Do Little to help Selkie.
the funniest thing would be if Benny tells Selkie that there was a totally different, less secret-revealing way of handling Tehk.
I would love that to happen, but given Benny’s levels of snark and smirk, I have reservations. Or is he SmirkenSnark, the Doctor who was a created monster?
Either way, I may not know what Benny isn’t but I do know he is the Master of SmirkenSnark!
Honestly, this one is on the adults. Selkie’s what, 8? Not exactly the best age even with human kids for keeping secrets. Rather than trying to make it some big secret and then depend on the child to keep it, they should have had a feasible explanation already in place (bio-luminescence or something) and brought it up earlier with the school. Not saying Selkie was right of course, but nor were the people in charge. Heck, she’s still new at this. Suppose she just got really upset and they glowed on their own without her trying? This would have come out eventually.
Until quite recently Selkie could not glow. The bow prevented her from doing everything. The government didn’t know, so why would they warn the school? Until the light beam in the sky, everyone at school (except the principal and his secretary) thought she was human with a medical condition.
“Honestly, this one is on the adults. Selkie’s what, 8?”
That’s what I keep saying!
Todd just found out, so I’ll cut him some slack, but he has no right to stay mad at her. She still needs to be grounded, of course, but he shouldn’t stay mad at her.
I agree with a lot of this guys, what 8 year old is going to keep that secret? And did anyone tell her to not tell anyone about what she can do now?
I have been there before- the moment you actually have no chance of coasting by without telling of your exploits in idiotic childhood chaos…
Dun dun dun….and why does Benny look smug at all? It seems kind of weird.
maybe he´s just happy that for once its not HIM thats in trouble? either way, i love his smirk! he´s been my favourite minor character right from the start!
Well, he didn’t know before that she was an Echo – so maybe that’s why? Seems to be kind of a running theme for the snarky sarnothi students to immediately go “THAT’S SO COOL!” when they find out that another kid has that power.
My guess was that Benny had a betting pool with the folks at the office about how long Selkie’s secret would last. He bet “not even a day” and scored big.
Benny is Avery’s son, not the agent.
Benny is Avery’s step-son, not the agent.
Her eyes weren’t glowing, it was swamp gas reflected off a weather balloon!
i’m sure that tomorrow there will a change to the schedule… since the new kids are not in the school’s medical database yet (Selkie IS because she’s been going to school there for years already), so there needs to be a new round of medical exams to get everybody on the same page… oh yeah and we’ll throw in a free eye exam for everyone as well…
This was going to happen. Everyone here *had* to know that a small child is a security risk. Introducing sarnothi has to be done all the way — you can’t make them hide parts of their lives.
This is the fault of the Agency. They totally failed to think it through.
Now, granted, the situation has been upended — not just once, but twice. Most recently, the coup in Sarnoth tore the mask right off. Sarnothi existence and nature can’t be classified now. Though I believe that yeah, the Agency was caught flat-footed, and someone’s ego is probably involved, so they haven’t adapted to the new world yet. Or at least, not well.
Before that, though, the discovery that Selkie had even weak Echo powers should have made someone in the Agency realize right then that they dun goofed. This was NOT EVER going to stay a secret.
If they try to put the blame on Selkie… or even worse, on Todd for not “controlling his daughter”… then shame on them.
Ah, so you’re saying it’s “business as usual” then? when have you ever heard of a Governmental Agency (from ANY government, mind you) EVER being willing to accept the blame and the responsibility for any kind of setback that a messed up “policy” has caused?? while i’m sure that Avery understands what happened and isn’t going to go too hard on Todd and Selkie, but he DOES have to come up with a plan that will reduce the tensions caused by it having come out in the open before they were ready to reveal it to the public… oh, yeah AND the plan has to keep his Boss happy enough he won’t want to actually ENFORCE the NDA that Todd signed as part of the security clearance paperwork…
Todd didn’t disclose a thing. And Todd’s now primed to come down hard on Selkie. About the only thing that could stop him would be if Avery tried to put the blame on her.
It’s a bit late to come up with a plan… I can’t think of a good one.
i agree, but the problem isn’t so much that TODD said anything, it’s that SELKIE said it (for varying degrees of “said something” that is)… and as most legal systems that i’m aware of go… the PARENT is responsible for whatever the CHILD does… therefore… Todd could get the hammer… as for Avery, I’m not real sure how to interpret his facial expression… it doesn’t seem like he’s in a “Hulk-Smash” kind of rage, but he does look slightly mad? or maybe more of an “Annoyed that the secret didn’t last even ONE day at school” kind of look… to me he looks more like he did when Todd had to see him for the medical info… with his standard “I’m a Government Agent” face…
I’m happy to report that the happening that happened to happen was just happenstance.
Technically Selkie isn’t lying about the normal part…that stuff is normal for her.
I can’t help but feel like something did not happen: todays update.
Afraid I have to Sick Day today’s strip, it will be up tomorrow
It’s weird how people don’t understand what bullying is and how being honest (even if it is mean-spirited honesty) to someone who messed up is the best way to deal with it.
Yep, Selkie is eight. Yep, the Agency is certainly to blame as well.
But the statement is true and needs to be said.
