Linkbacks: Gregori and Hamud staring. Dr. Bunny-Me. Also, yesterday was the comic’s 5th birthday! Selkie (the story) is now FIVE! As is annual tradition, here’s a birthday sketch:
I make no claims towards the scientific or taxonomic accuracy of these fish. ;)
I have had this scene running in my head for months now, but now that it’s finally out, I feel a bit sad watching it unfold. So, I’d like to lighten the mood with some cute fan art sent to[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Sometimes drawing Selkie is a fine balance between "adorable" and "horrifying". Too much realism or detail and she becomes alien and, visually speaking, difficult to relate to. This is why I usually only draw her top row of teeth when speaking. I want her fangs to remain visible on a "day to day" basis so they don't become jarring or unnerving when they DO appear (in the visual language of comics and animation suddenly-appearing fangs tends to signify malicious intent, a trope I try to subvert with Selkie's design); but when both rows of teeth become visible it can create a "baring her fangs" look. I mention this because I personally find the close up of Selkie's mouth here a bit unnerving. She's a sweet stubborn and smart kid, but she also has a mouth filled with razor sharp fangs. She can't help it but it's unavoidable that, to a human perspective, her mouth is a bit scary if you look too closely.
I like to think the orphanage staff disabled the game system’s wireless capabilities. On-line gamer chatter is not a thing youngin’s need to hear. Slightly related! I got curious and looked up XBox Live clips on Youtube. I think this[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Cabbage Patch Commandos is a kid-friendly homage to Team Fortress 2. Instead of bullets and blowing up, you have carrot juice and fainting, and the pyro's fire is more like cartoon fire, where you just go "BOMPH" and turn into a burnt matchstick with blinking eyes.
It’s been awhile since we saw the Activity Center. I tried to make it look more lively than it’s last appearance. Color helps! I am going out of town for a bit starting this Wednesday. But never fear! I have[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
My brother and I use to solve a lot of intellectual and philosophical disputes (also who got Controller 1 when playing Sega) by roughhousing until someone quit or Mom grounded us.
Amanda has yet to make the Sparkly Eyes work on Lillian. – – – – – If you don’t already read Jade Griffin and Trevor Black’s webcomic Shards, today is a great day to start! I’ve been informed that Selkie[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
I got the idea for Hamud while watching news footage of the revolution and riots in Egypt this past winter, following the regime change. I don't mean to suggest this as his in-story origin, but it is his real-world inspiration. If that makes sense. Lillian's qi pao was designed after a few google searches. I love asymmetrical clothing designs, and I wanted something different from the kimonos she wore as the last two outfits we saw.
I am happy to announce the return of the No-Longer-Quite-So-Secret Director Commentary! I think the Transcript widget will work better for allowing the extra comments without creating some of the frustrations the mouseovers were giving people. Just click anywhere in[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
I tried to pay attention to lighting and shading direction in this one, with two light sources (a hallway light and the window). I'm so used to shading everything on the "Audience Left" for some reason. XD The policeman is named Officer Martin. I decided to name him after a background/cameo character from Rent. XD I'll talk more about the little boy on the next update.
