Oh yeah. Which I can’t blame Todd for. Hopefully some peaceful things can happen over dinner, and at least Todd seems to be willing to be civil in front of the kids.
Let the Face-Off begin. AAAaaaand by face-Off, I mean I think Mandy is going to try to tear Selkie’s face — off!
Finger nails against gen-u-wine claws. …yeah, not going to last long till both parents have to leave work to take custody…. Oh, yeah, ‘Confrontation!!’ the Breakfast of Champions,… for Lunch, Yeah.
Basically, I tend to end up working past Midnight Central on the comic, but don’t want to leave those who check the strip right at the stroke of midnight hanging, so when it hits 12 I post whatever I’ve got done at the time (Typically the uncolored linework) the finish the rest and update with the final version an hour or two later.
Some webcomics I follow for the art, some for the story, some for the characters, some for the funny. In Selkie’s case, I will cheerfully take blue-pencil stick figures.
I think what Coco is pointing out is that the lower part of the bang (that descends below Andi’s nose) is yellow in Panel 2, and its natural color in Panel 5. I think it’s probably because the heat from Todd’s death glare is evaporating the dye.
I think Todd has plenty of anger from the last time they talked. I don’t hate Andi, but I will say that Todd’s anger at her is understandable. He found out that the child that he thought was dead for years is alive, and in all that time, Andi did not tell him the truth. Not only that, but she still has the delusion right now that Todd will want to be together with her for the sake of their child. In that situation, I think that I would have plenty of mad left. So she doesn’t have to do anything at this point. That being said, I hope that while they don’t get back together, that they can be on friendly terms again, eventually.
She’s already done more than enough to not earn his forgiveness a few hundred times over.
The *only* thing she can do at this point is keep quiet and walk away, because there’s absolutely *nothing* she can say right now that isn’t going to be the wrong thing to say.
Nor can she force him to forgive her. And honestly if she kept trying to get him to,she isn’t looking for forgiveness. She’s looking to ease her guilt and not actual forgiveness.
Now, this is just speculation on my part but, perhaps, just maybe, she felt his intense glare and, oh I dunno, just happened to LOOK IN HIS DIRECTION AND LOOKS UNCOMFORTABLE FOR IT? Holy hell dude. She’s not expecting a smile, she’s just in a really uncomfortable situation and is responding accordingly. If someone I knew very well was glaring intensely at me I’d probably give then an uncomfortable look as well.
And honestly? Todd is being childish here. Yes, he has every right to be angry at her. But he’s already made his point to her she’s ever so aware of his intense hatred of her general existence. Glaring at her behind his children’s backs is childish and petty. Might as well just mutter under your breath, “I don’t like you.” while you’re at it Todd.
Andi needs to back off with the getting back together thing, for sure, but she’s no where in the wrong by hoping they can start ato least a friendship for the sake of their daughter. As long as she doesn’t try anything disrespectful or funny. She very much needs to move on and find someone better suited for her and leave Todd alone; romantically that is.
Cause it’ll be super healthy for Amanda to see her dad hate her mom, possibly bad mouth her in front of her or let Selkie know how much he dislikes Andi.
When Amanda asks him why they aren’t together she’s not gonna accept, “Things just didn’t work out.” she will whine, cry and be bratty about it until Todd snaps and says he hates Andi. It’ll be so much easier if he just concedes to at LEAST being civil and possibly establish a friendship for his child.
But no let’s do the whole, I was wonged so I deserve revenge and be wrong because I’m entitled.
How about be the bigger person and realize mistakes were made and accept that things can’t be undone and that they will ALWAYS BE INVOLVED because they have a daughter. Andi was wrong, Andi lied, Andi deceived him for 8 years, he’s got a right to be mad, but he needs to look at the big picture. If he doesn’t want to be involved with Amanda, then say so. But if he wants to be involved? Then get the hell over the past and make amends and come to terms with the fact that Andi will ALWAYS BE THERE. Otherwise he needs to say, “Hey, I hate Andi so much that I can’t see my daughter. So uh… yeah bye.”
How in the Heck did you get “mistake” out of “DISGUSTING LIE THAT I KEPT UP FOR EIGHT LONG YEARS THEN COMPLETELY DISRESPECTED HIS ENTIRE FAMILY AND HOW THEY ARE.” So. No. I would never forgive Andi.
Thinking of never forgiving as some sort of justified revenge is like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die.
Hate injures the person who feels it, not the one who is hated. Todd has every right to feel very very angry with Andi. Nobody’s disputing that. Nobody expects him to forget what she did, either. But, for his own mental health, I sure hope he doesn’t get caught in the trap of “never forgiving because she deserves to be hated forever.”
Simile. “Is like…” People do want rats to die, but it doesn’t achieve that objective to drink the poison yourself. People want those who have wronged them to suffer some sort of just punishment. Hating them doesn’t achieve that objective. It only hurts the hater. Hence, “is like.”
Anger is normal. But normal anger dissolves over time. It doesn’t last forever. Hanging on to hatred is caustic. It’ll burn out your insides. You have to let it go before you can heal.
Now, trust? No, you don’t have to give your trust again to someone who has let you down.
And let’s be clear here. Todd doesn’t owe Andi shizz. Not his forgiveness. His friendship. Nothing. She messed up in worse ways than people care. And she isn’t owed anything because of it.
Todd’s anger is justified and pretending that it’s toxic is utterly childish. Especially when she did something so nasty.
This isn’t about revenge or never forgiving. This isn’t about forgiveness at *all*
It’s about trust. Specifically, the trust that Andi broke so very badly — and then made the situation infinitely worse by trying to push into the wound in an attempt “to get back what we had”.
She could not possibly have handled that any worse than she did short of loudly threatening to kill herself right there because she just couldn’t bear living with Todd angry at her.
That glare isn’t “I hate you forever”. That glare is “You hurt me, you betrayed me, and it will be a very long time before I trust you with anything important to me again. For my daughters’ and your daughter’s sake I have no choice but to allow you partially back into my life. Do not make me regret it or require me to make a choice that you will regret.”
Am I the only one looking at this and thinking, you know Amanda’s emotional needs don’t actually out weigh Todds and acting like he’s no right to his anger or feeling of betrayal because of a child is kind of dehumanising to the parent. Your child is entitled to your love and care, they are not entitled to you acting a certain way towards other adults. If parents don’t like each other anymore its better the child knows it. It better the child understand why few words are spoken to one another and why they rarely go to places together. It’s better the child knows that things did not work out between there parents and that they would like to avoid one another but in spite of that they still love you and want to see and spend time with you. A child can understand that and deal with it and hiding the fact will only cause more emotional damage as they get older and start putting the pieces together and realise how much has been hidden from them.
There are things that happen that you don’t just let go. Being told your daughter is dead for 8 years, being given an urn of cedar ashes, and then when told the truth, the lying liar that lies makes moves to restart a relationship with you is one of those things.
Maybe in time he’ll learn to fake being fine with Andi in front of Amanda, but he should never just let go of what happened. It was a very nasty, cruel gesture that required concerted effort to pull on him. This was a cruelty performed for eight years on purpose. Andi doesn’t even deserve his friendship.
Plus frankly, telling a man to get over his justified anger if he wants to be a parent to his child is very ridiculous. In real life, I would even call it sadistic. He was mourning his daughter for all that time, true in time he got better, but he was allowed to mourn when there was no need to.
And yes Nanchatte, she did nothing wrong in the strip. But that wasn’t LadyObvious’ point. Just that the anger is justified and she shouldn’t be surprised.
“Cause it’ll be super healthy for Amanda to see her dad hate her mom, possibly bad mouth her in front of her or let Selkie know how much he dislikes Andi.”
And that’s a large part of why he didn’t glare at her until *after* both girls were off to school.
He’ll stay /civil/ to Andi for Selkie and Amanda’s sake. But that’s all she has a right to expect, and the way she blatantly disrespected his boundaries near the end of the aquarium trip means he’s very unlikely to ever trust her again for a /very/ long time to come.
No, nothing at all. Not a single bit. Aside from prove she is not a good person, but a manipulative little thing, someone that will toss another person’s feelings into a wood chipper, and arrogantly think she can get what she’s lost because she wants it.
I have agreed with the occasional thing she’s done but I would be blind to think she’s done nothing wrong. She very much has.
Because it’s canon. She’s ripped his feelings apart by faking their daughter’s death and giving him an urn of cedar ashes. She insulted the fact he was adopted, him and his entire family by insulting adoption. And she tried pushing a relationship by asking if they could have what they had after she revealed the truth despite the fact that she had to know he was furious.
She knew this was basically tossing his emotions into a wood chipper. That’s exactly how we read this into the comic. If that’s nothing, I’d hate to see your definition of something.
I love how you tricked us into thinking that panels 1 & 2 or panels 3 & 4 were isolated from each other because of the guttering, but it turned out that they were only the gutter’s width apart.
I’ve got to find a way to do that in my comic.
Mort? Mort the Ghost, as in the most beloved of all of Tom Siddel’s side characters? Are you really Tom? Or do your u just love Mort as much as we all do? Which one is Your comic, then? We read web comics.
I am not Mort, nor am I secretly Tom; I just use the name Mort and I apologize for any confusion I may have caused you.
I do have my own webcomic which you can find by clicking on my name.
Amanda is definitely at the age where kids learn things via the golden rule “dont do to others what you dont want done to yourself.” Amanda has already been abandoned twice, one of which involved her getting taken back to the orphanage specifically -because- of sibling rivalry. It’s not that you misjudged her, but wanting to get rid of a sibling b/c of personal jealousy is definitely on her no-no list. Amanda is capable of having empathy for others like herself (which is why she had such a close relationship w/ heather until she got adopted, & was feverent at first about having Keisha adopted with her). I feel like she would never wish abandonment/rejection even on her worst enemy… (which, coincidentally, -used- to be ‘fishface’, as she likes to put it).
Really? I think how she treated Keisha when Andi came to claim her says otherwise – Heather getting adopted and not taking Amanda and Keisha along was a mortal sin, but Amanda dumped Keisha (her “friend”) without a thought when it was her own turn.
I think that what her own abandonment has taught Amanda is that biological kids wanting to get rid of adopted kids WORKS.
Do people really wear ear muffs all that much? I live in Texas, and have some toques for the 1 week of ice we get, but beyond that, a hooded jacket is usually the way I go.
F! That!… knit-style ski hats and if it get really cold then i’ll go with a balaclava, or one of those Russian style Ushanka hats with the fold down flap that goes all around the back of the head… THOSE are warm…
This is an incredibly awkward moment for all 4 of them.. but I love the look on Amanda’s face. She’s grimly come to terms with her situation at hand & I feel like because of her previous familial rejection, is the only one who is ready to willingly go into this mess. Part of her anger/violence issues was b/c she was abandoned. She’s basically now living any orphan’s dream (even if it comes with stipulations). She knows that Selkie isnt going anywhere (and bc of her past, amanda actually wouldn’t want her to). Ironically, by the looks on their faces, Amanda may just act as the reasonable one out of all 4. Now that she has what she’s always wished, I think she’s grown up enough to take all this in stride & make it work at any cost.
Okay just a drawing thing I noticed on the last panel with Andi’s hands behind her back. Is her right hand showing to the audience as palm side or backside? It’s hard to tell.
then she’s doing a real good Linda Blair impression with her head rotated more than 120 degrees from the front (people mostly don’t turn their HEADS more than about 90 degrees from the front. if they need more they usually turn their body as well)… the way i see it is that both Todd and Andi are still facing the kids as they walk into school, so that would make it her RIGHT arm is relatively straight and held behind her waist, with her LEFT hand grabbing her right wrist/forearm… Todd has both of his arms on his hips, that’s why both of his arms are bent like that. the vertical stripe on both of their jackets/torsos is the line that the spine makes…
Continuity thing, so forgive me. Didn’t Selkie’s backpack have a rainbow on the flap? I feel like it did. Other than that, can’t wait to see where this arc goes
Wow. That’s a bona fide hate face death stare Todd has going on. Not a judgement , just observation.
Oh yeah. Which I can’t blame Todd for. Hopefully some peaceful things can happen over dinner, and at least Todd seems to be willing to be civil in front of the kids.
Not sure if letting the kids go at each other before they had a proper talk is the good idea…
Let the Face-Off begin. AAAaaaand by face-Off, I mean I think Mandy is going to try to tear Selkie’s face — off!
Finger nails against gen-u-wine claws. …yeah, not going to last long till both parents have to leave work to take custody…. Oh, yeah, ‘Confrontation!!’ the Breakfast of Champions,… for Lunch, Yeah.
awesome! but, sorry for complaining… why isn’t it coloured? I wanna see what colour andi put in her hair today!
When dave is running behind he will put the page up as a WIP.

This is bugging me; part of Andi’s bang is red and not blonde in the last panel.
Maybe she rushed to get out the door this morning.
Dave said last comic that Andi uses a washout dye so she can change the colors on a whim.
I think what Coco is pointing out is that the lower part of the bang (that descends below Andi’s nose) is yellow in Panel 2, and its natural color in Panel 5. I think it’s probably because the heat from Todd’s death glare is evaporating the dye.
Andi’s Hair Dye is like Amanda’s earrings: comes and goes as it pleases.
Really Andi? Do you really think he’s going to smile at you or anything like that? He’s only being civil for Amanda’s sake.
She hasn’t even DONE anything on this page.
I think Todd has plenty of anger from the last time they talked. I don’t hate Andi, but I will say that Todd’s anger at her is understandable. *nodnodnod* All of this. Hopefully Andi’s wistfulness of Getting Back Together is evaporating fast, though!
She’s already done more than enough to not earn his forgiveness a few hundred times over.
The *only* thing she can do at this point is keep quiet and walk away, because there’s absolutely *nothing* she can say right now that isn’t going to be the wrong thing to say.

Yeaaaaah, I think telling him his kid died and letting him believe it year after year is going to cause death glares for quite a while…
She didn’t even do anything. I hate that bitch and even I think you’re overreacting…
Now, this is just speculation on my part but, perhaps, just maybe, she felt his intense glare and, oh I dunno, just happened to LOOK IN HIS DIRECTION AND LOOKS UNCOMFORTABLE FOR IT? Holy hell dude. Andi has done NOTHING to warrant the claims you make about her.

Wow, I expected Amanda to demand Todd take her and abandon Selkie. Looks like I misjudged her.

This has nothing to do with the comic. Saw this, and realized that Selkie needs a new jacket.

“Bests jackets evers”
Do people really wear ear muffs all that much? I live in Texas, and have some toques for the 1 week of ice we get, but beyond that, a hooded jacket is usually the way I go.
Well if I remember correctly this takes place in Minnesota, and it gets super cold up there during the winter so earmuffs are probably pretty common
Wisconsin, but yes. Plenty cold there, too, at times. Andi’s wearing earmuffs because frostbite hurts and a tuque or hood would ruin her hair.
Todd’s wearing earmuffs because guys do.
F! That!… knit-style ski hats and if it get really cold then i’ll go with a balaclava, or one of those Russian style Ushanka hats with the fold down flap that goes all around the back of the head… THOSE are warm…
Oh my, what a picture of a happy family *SARCASM FILTER ACTIVATED*
WELL! This day is off to a WONDERFUL start!
This is an incredibly awkward moment for all 4 of them.. but I love the look on Amanda’s face. She’s grimly come to terms with her situation at hand & I feel like because of her previous familial rejection, is the only one who is ready to willingly go into this mess. Holy jeeze I did not know Todd could make that sort of face. Gives me the shivers a bit…
This gonna be a long day.
Amanda: Anger
Selkie: Anger
Todd: Anger
Andi: On the verge of tears
*SIGH* Great
OMG, the kids are sticking their tongues out at each other!! *giggle*
Okay just a drawing thing I noticed on the last panel with Andi’s hands behind her back. Is her right hand showing to the audience as palm side or backside? It’s hard to tell.
Andi is walking towards the *camera* thus her right arm is hanging in front with the left holding it.
then she’s doing a real good Linda Blair impression with her head rotated more than 120 degrees from the front (people mostly don’t turn their HEADS more than about 90 degrees from the front. if they need more they usually turn their body as well)… the way i see it is that both Todd and Andi are still facing the kids as they walk into school, so that would make it her RIGHT arm is relatively straight and held behind her waist, with her LEFT hand grabbing her right wrist/forearm… Todd has both of his arms on his hips, that’s why both of his arms are bent like that. the vertical stripe on both of their jackets/torsos is the line that the spine makes…
Continuity thing, so forgive me. Didn’t Selkie’s backpack have a rainbow on the flap? I feel like it did. Other than that, can’t wait to see where this arc goes
Yes it sure did! Thanks for the catch.
THIS IS WAR
Like parent, like daughter. <3
Ah, such beautiful symmetry.
