Thank you, everyone, for your commentary on the idea I mentioned last time about a format change. Many of you pointed out advantages of the full page format I had overlooked, or didn’t even realize I was utilizing. I have decided to stay the course with the current full page format, thank you for letting me bounce ideas off of your heads.
Another Fan Art update arrived in my inbox yesterday! This is courtesy Mark Monlux:
Time for a shoe-shopping snack. XD
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.

Wow. Why does Greg look evil in that last panel? Seriously, he looks like he’s about to start laughing maniacally. I mean, damn. 9% isn’t THAT good, even if the shoes cost $100 dollars that’s only $9 for him.
NWHAHAHAHA- Greg
Hang on, she said knocked UP 9%. Holy crap, that could mean a lot.
Yeah, but Selkie’s a little girl, and most girls ‘need’ more than one pair of ‘everyday’ shoes… A lot more.
And considering the state of Selkie’s feet, he can expect they’ll be dropping by on a regular basis…
Bah. I have two pairs of shoes: One for hiking in winter, and one for hiking in fall. |3
I have one
I guarantee you, custom shoes are going to cost more than $100. A LOT more. A really nice pair of NON-custom tennis shoes can cost well over $100.
…the most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever purchased was $60, and those were were Dr. Scholes no-slip reinforced work shoes. -_-
I figured a hundred was a safe bet.
I’m also now frightened by what the rest of you pay for shoes.
Ah Makokam, it must be nice to have “regular” feet that fit fine in inexpensive shoes. My feet are wide for their length and my instep is higher than most inexpensive shoes will fit comfortably. And I “pronate” when I walk (roll my foot) to the point of needing a slight correction. My walking shoes were about $125. My hiking boots were $175 – both on sale. I’ve known a few people who needed custom shoes – prices were astronomical in the 70’s ($150 back then), I’d hate to think what they’d be like now. So, yeah, you’re lucky … hope your feet stay “normal” 😉
I am in a similar boat. I wear size 15 shoes. Fortunately I’ve found a few places that worked well for me. But without that luck factor, I’m looking at 200 dollar shoes. Sure at 9% that’s only 18 bucks, but that’s not custom either. As an example, pro wrestlers boots cost at minimum 400 bucks if you want a good pair. That’s without any fancy designs and with a good company. So you figure, a little girl will want fancy, probably wheels, he’s going to shell out the cash.
Indeed, sirs and madams, the price of foot aparel is appauling.
Dave> No problem! Glad I could share my voice! 🙂 Love the strip today!
I just found this today, and I’ve read it straight through from beginning to end. I just wish there were more of it allready!
I think Annabeth meant “Oui” there.
Love the comic, been following since the third page!
ROFL! “Oui” makes a huge difference. When I read it as “Oi”, I mentally added a Jersey accent!
Actually, it is supposed to be “Oi”. I thought giving her an accent that contradicted her attire would be funny. XD
It was! I laughed out loud with the Jersey accent I had for her in my head. It worked for me.
I agree with Michelle’s observation. “Oui” is French for “yes.” “Oi” is an informal way to get someone’s attention. “Oi! What do you think you’re doing!?”
With a dress code like that, they’d better get a high commission.
Evil smile + little girl in “glass” slipper collection = OUCH! to the wallet. On top of that we have as others have mentioned. Large initial order with many repeat sales. Afterall, Selkie is still a growing child. And children go through WAY to many shoes. 😛
And here’s me remembering when I had a growth spurt and practically walked through shoes every week.. I ended up waring cheep canvas and sandles because we couldn’t afford the tennies
From Annabeth’s dialogue I get more of a 18th-19th century Cockney vibe. Whether that’s genuine or just part and parcel with the period dress, I have no idea…
Love Todd’s expression of utter panic in the 4th panel! Far from the last time he’ll be wearing it today, I’m sure.
Not quite sure I understand Todd’s panic over the “Cinderella” collection – Plexiglass is not breakable (well, not EASILY breakable). Thought I guess it could be scratched badly … say by a hand with hard claws?
Oi, is Annabeth Cockney?
That’s how I imagined when I read it!
II got the impression that for Annabeth that this is just a job. When not speaking to customers she does not bother with being in character. For Greg it is a lifestyle.
Resplendent is an awesome word. I resolve to use it in daily speech.
*dies of hysterical laughter at Todd in panel 4*
Also, Gregoroi is a jackass. Bring back Jessie, I’m sure we’d all love to see her in 18th century dress!
Oh my gosh..Todd’s expression in panel 4 is epic……and Selkie’s “I didn’ts touch thems yet” made me giggle….ah,the power of ‘Yet’
Happy New Years from Shards!!!! We’re hoping for another year of great fish girl goodness :)!
Ah…. I am beginning to wonder exactly what Todd does for a living that he could afford to shell out four or five hundred dollars on shoes…. I wish I had grown up with a parent who could do stuff like that. >.>;;
Todd is an architect. And he doesn’t yet realize what custom shoes can run. :3
Gregori’s use of the word “resplendent” made me fall in love with the character. I don’t hear that word enough in normal life.
Also, I agree with Fu, I’d need to get paid a LOT to dress like that.
“Cinderella section”? “Plexiglass slippers”? Hmmm…
Oh. OH! Gotcha! Gotcha.
