Yeah, he knows in the “everyone knows” way. Probably knows from gossip that even then might not have been explicitly, but heavily implied.
Considering how much Avery is involved in taking care of Selkie, he’s something of a godfather to her, making Benny almost like a (step steppity… ok, I’ll stop) brother in a sense.
Also valid, assuming Benny accepts Avery’s role as surrogate father. He’s definitely got some anger around that and I think that’s why Avery is consistently tolerant of Benny’s sass.
I just checked when the first comic was posted and felt old. I started reading this comic back when I was in college, right around the time it first started. Sixteen years…the sheer number of years, if nothing else, shows how deeply this story has touched me. The characters, the world, and the humanity (in the philosophical sense) prove that the story matters vastly more than how the characters are drawn. Bravo!
Dave linked it in today’s comment, specifically saying that was Benny’s father. It’s been established over the course of the story that Avery’s Sarnothi family are the same family whose father/husband was killed. His name was Behn. Hence, “Benny,” his son. Benny has a sister who we know less about – I think the official story is she chose to stay with extended family in Sarnoth?
I like the fact Benny’s come up with “stuff it in your air tank.”
Persumably there’s an equivalent to “stuff it in your piehole” in sarnothi, but air tanks will have been a fairly recent concept for them. That a teenager is making the linguistic adaptation, and doing so as an insult, is very much on point.
Yeah, I’m definitely reading this as Benny saying she’s calling Scar “Dad.” She wouldn’t have to swim to call Todd “Dad.”
I swear the boy knows. The question is still HOW he knows.

I think Benny has yet to understand that while Scar might have fathered her, he isn’t her dad.
An excellent point. We all know what happened to Benny’s father, and that’s overshadowing his reaction to Selkie trying to learn about hers.
I’m thinking this entire story arc is low-key about Benny overcoming that. Hopefully. The boy needs some help, I think.
It’s the mere fact that, whatever happens/whatever decisions she makes, she has the option available to her in a way that just isn’t there for him.

I’ve been assuming that the girl (Pe Geh Su’Todai) also died at some point, and that the details have yet to be revealed.
