I’m assuming she’s had The Talk and is just using that as euphemism, yea. Especially given the hesitation. She’s not crass enough to address it in the more… blunt way.
Well, she may not know exactly what part of adults dating will lead to a child of their heritage being born. I’m not saying she could’t know (or should’t – that I’ll leave for others to decide), just that it’s not necessary for having the conversation she’s currently in.
I do still wonder how that one girl could tell she was half Sar’teri on sight? Up till now most Sarnothi just seemed to treat Selkie as a full Jin’Sorai. Sarnothi can be pretty racist so I’d have expected it to be commented on more often
I guess since interclan marriage is super rare, maybe it’s only something you can see if you know how to look for it?
I didn’t notice it originally, but both Selkie and the other kid are a slightly cooler shade of violet/periwinkle than the other Jin’Sorai we’ve seen, who have a slightly pinker tint.
her name is Bohn Bohn (the other kid in question), and she’s easily a favorite character of mine. the only sarnothi kid we dont know the name of is the angy mor’kama child dubbed Angry Frogboy.
Benny mentioned that “everyone knows it” but they don’t talk about it. They’re probably being polite and/or don’t want Selkie to know her heritage so they can raise her as a “full” Jin’Sorai.
You can typically tell when another person is mixed-race, and often which races they might be. White+black, white+hispanic, and hispanic+black are typically easy to spot, sometimes asian races can be a little more ambiguous.
I’m sure that another Sarnothi would be able to discern the racial or “clan” differences in their species.
Not my interpretation at all. I get the feeling she knows the basics of “when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much”, but not necessarily that it could happen outside of a relationship. I could be way off base, though. Kids today have a lot more access to information than even I did as a child.
I think Selkie would know it can happen outside a relationship. For one thing, she grew up in an orphanage, with kids who would have various circumstances that lead them to be there and awareness of different family structures. (And also by her age, I was certainly aware of things to the extent that they’d be shown on a general audience sitcom, at least.)
how do surnames work in sarnoth? like, is the kids’ a combanation of their parents? is so, that would mean selkie’s birth name was either Nei Li Ma’Limdai or K’Chien. neither of those sound great.
I’ve been going back to look at the older comics for a while over the last few updates to remember when things happened and stuff so this was still mostly easy to find again. It seems to me that it was always implied Selkie may not be fully Jin’Sorai from the start (but I don’t know for sure). I say this from back when Selkie was bullied and had to go to the hospital and first met Pohl he seemed unsure what clan she was but that my be my own interpretation of it.
Selkie comic 381 second to last panel Pohl says while on the phone to his wife talking in translated Tensi about Selkie for the first time, quote: “I wasn’t sure at first, but… Sai Fen she’s… She’s one of Clan Jin’Sorai…” As for surname I had assumed Selkie would have used her mother’s surname if her parents weren’t together when she was born but I do not know what the Sarnothi customs are for surnames. Nothing was said of any surname Selkie had before adoption and she may have been given the same generic placeholder surname like Keisha of ‘Doe’ (unless I am way off and that is just Keisha’s last name by chance and not related to ‘Jane/John Doe’ placeholder name custom among humans).
Unrelated to the current topic, but I am also wait for any story/stories of George or Keisha getting adopted in the comic’s future.
Yep. its also the term for female rabbits. But a silky is another name for fainting goat. meat breed. Idk much abt them tho bc i only have pygmies and nigerian dwarfs (including a wether (castrated male) that looks pregnant). If u have any questions about animals i probably know the answer. hopefully. 😀 Silkie and silkie satins are breeds of guinea pig.
Yeah, and considering the current circumstances, there’s a lot of reasons why most of the Sarnothi that Selkie has met would want to emphasize the Jin’Sorai heritage and not the Sar’Teri side. Maybe “Sel Kie” literally means something like child between two tribes or similar.
“Nothing was said of any surname Selkie had before adoption and she may have been given the same generic placeholder surname like Keisha of ‘Doe’ (unless I am way off and that is just Keisha’s last name by chance and not related to ‘Jane/John Doe’ placeholder name custom among humans). ”
At one point, seeeeveral comics back, Amanda said (pretending shock), “Why Keisha Doe!!??”
The question was brought up in the comments about that last name – actually I think I asked, but I do know that it was asked – and Dave said that all of the orphans that did not actually have a last name were legally Doe. Selkie Doe, Keisha Doe, Amanda Doe. If they had an actual last name when they came to the orphanage, they kept that.

selkie doe sounds like youre making bread out of the goat breed, or mispronounced silkie like the cavy breed lol
The official term for a female goat is doe (like a deer). I don’t know what you mean by selkie goats, though!

I had a couple of Nubian dairy goats when I was in Highschool!
Female goats are also commonly called “nannies”, and males “billies”. Ask any troll.
yep. but you dont EVER call them that in the ring.
