TODD: Do you think "observation" is necessary?
POHL: I think it's... safer, yes.
POHL: The reaction Amanda's had is something that needs... more care. I'd feel more comfortable if we could remove potential variables to ensuring there's no "lasting effects".
POHL (VO): I'm also not wanting to see what happens if the... "reaction" pokes up again before she can get a proper look-over.
ANDI: Um, no? If she's fine enough to not go to the Emergency Room, then I think a sick kid should be in her OWN bed.
TODD: ...I can't really say "no" to that.
POHL: Just... please PLEASE keep that barrette on!
ANDI: ... Yeah. Sure.
AMANDA: THIS IS MY BARRETTE! IT WAS MADE FOR ME!

Reycled pop culture references are good for climate change. Maybe.
Oh, no. Nononononono … no.
She’s gonna take the barrette off, isn’t she?
I’m not sure what’s worse. Knowing that’s what’s probably going to happen, or having to wait until next week now to confirm it.
Come on, we all know she has to do it now. Andi represents polarization and just like what this country needs is more of that, no? What’s that thing that dogs do when you pull on the leash? Defiant Opposition Reflex? Something something, something like that, …? She’s gotta do it because she’s gotta be in control, it’s not like she’s Amanda’s Genetic Mom or anything like that, sheeesh!
I think Andi feels the need to have some degree of control in the situation. Somewhat understandable but is it the best thing for her daughter.
At the same time, Todd is also Amanda’s father. Really, Amanda should have her own bed in both apartments. I know that there could always be sibling issues between her and Selkie with ‘sleepovers’, but Amanda should also be able to have a space that’s hers when she’s with her father.
Agreed that Amanda should have some space but unless he moves that’s going to entail the girls having to share a room which means that Selkie no longer has her own private space.
Eventually that might not be such a big deal but right now it would be.
Once they sort out the custody arrangements I’m sure both girls will end up with their own space with Todd but things are still pretty new at this point.
Dave, in the world of the comic how long has it been since Selkie was adopted and Todd learned that Amanda was his? Has it even been 6 months yet?
I’m thinking about eight. He adopted her in August. School had not yet started, but it was just about to. Her birthday is in May. She has not had her birthday yet. Look at the way Jesse is dressed. No way it is still winter up by the Great Lakes. But even if it was March, she was not be wearing a sleeveless dress. I’m guessing April, which would be 8 months after August.
They’ve harped on the barrette so much I’m now wondering if Andi will be dumb enough to try taking it off Amanda while she’s asleep or something…
Because taking it off worked so well last time.
And there is no better way for the Defiant to establish who’s in “control” than to do what you’ve been told not to.
She’s impulsive, not stupid. I believe she knows enough about what it’s for to understand that she shouldn’t touch it.
Oh, definitely NOT a stupid. Todd wouldn’t have liked her if she was. And she is impulsive. But Todd changed when they were apart, growing a lot while adopting Selkie. He was ready. I still think Andi’s oppositional defiant type means she’s gonna push it.
this is Andi we are talking about, She’s going to take it off while Amanda sleeps. Amanda will wake up screaming with her eyes on fire, and Andi will break the barrette when she starts to panic. she’ll demand answers and she’ll have to be debriefed by the government agents, and sworn to secrecy.
The true moral of the Enigma of the Amigara Fault:
Don’t do crack
Gotta admit, that wasn’t a reference I expected in this comic xD
I understand Andi’s reaction, BUT :
A: If the government knew about Amanda’s new…reaction… she’d disappear so far it’d make Andi’s head spin.
B: “This my barrette, there are many like it but this one is MINE!”
wow what’s with the attitude, Andi, sheesh. You’re getting advice from a medical professional, don’t be a Karen
That was my reaction too.
Andi… *Sigh* 🤦🏼♀️
I think Andi feels that there’s something going on that they aren’t telling her, and she wants Amanda out of the situation. I agree that this is likely to end poorly, but she is reacting within the limits of her current knowledge. She is probably getting a “Let me grab my daughter and back slowly out of this room” vibe.
…I get that you care about your daughter, Andi. But for crying out loud they’re trying to make sure she doesn’t get sick. Didn’t removing the barrette give you enough reason to let her stay to see if she’s going to be fine? DX
Gotta say, I’m 100% behind Andi here. She knows she’s being lied to. She knows she’s being shut out. She’s behaving like anyone would in this situation. She’s angry and she has a right to be. Something sketchy going on involving my kid and since doctor friend of ex? My kid is sick and no one will give me a straight answer about what’s going on? Farm right I’m getting her out of there.
Autocorrect.
* _some_ friend of my ex
* _darn_ right I’m getting her out
Agreed, the entire thing’s been so sketchy and secretive that it was doomed to failure. I get that Pohl’s in a bad situation – unprecedented issue, and Andi was never cleared for any of the info Todd’s gotten – but the acknowledgement that she’s Amanda’s mom and it’s GOING to come out has been sorely missing. I suspect even a ‘I know how sketchy this sounds, but I can’t give you the whole story yet; as soon as I can, I will, but in the meantime, please make sure her barette stays on’ would help. (After all, if Amanda’s going to be his student, it’s pretty impractical for Pohl to never work with Andi. Starting the whole thing on a lie doesn’t bode well for that interpersonal relationship longterm.)
As it stands, it gives one the impression Pohl wants Amanda to stay overnight so they can all get a consistent story. Which will, of course, be a lie.
They’re making Andi too suspicious.
Just give Amanda Pohl’s phone number so she can text him if stuff start’s getting weird again.
Given a contest between Andi domineering and Amanda throwing a nuclear tantrum, which she has already put on the table…
I’d bet on Amanda…best hope the barrette doesn’t come off then.
