Brutally honest.

I would like to take this chance to let you all know that this Saturday will have a special bonus update! Now that Selkie has been officially introduced, I’d love to share some of the concept sketches I used to design her.
I won’t do sketch bonuses EVERY Saturday, just periodically as I find things worth posting. When one is coming I will be sure to let you all know. Like now! Bonus sketch update this Saturday!
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
I would adopt Selkie
Hi, I just discovered the comic and added it to my bookmark folder. I’m assuming that Selkie really is a selkie? I love selkies, and I want to adopt as soon as my pesky life-draining incurable illness goes away – I’d adopt Selkie and take her swimming and make sushi for her. I have a feeling she likes these things…
Selkie is not a “textbook” selkie, although she shares similarities. What she is will come later.
(and yes, she would love swimming and sushi. Possibly simultaneously!)
Sorry about your illness, I wish you hope and strength with it.
This is strangely engaging… it’s not the art that is so charming (but you know that) rather, it’s how quickly I’ve come to like the characters. Even Mrs somethingsomethign-zhang 😉 can’t wait to see the story’s progression!
Thank you! I am glad you’re enjoying the story.
I am also working on the art, strip by strip. Hopefully I can eventually surprise you. 😀
Selkie’s appearance reminds me of someone with genetic condition called Harlequin Ichtyosis. Its a rare skin disorder that causes skin cells to grow uncontrollably and produces children with diamond like scales and out-turned eyes at birth. With treatment they start to look like Selkie does, but most of the infants born with it die within the first few days of life. The oldest living person who was born with this disorder is like 21, and in college. Its probably good to research this disorder to raise awareness of it, but be warned, the images google will bring up are graphic photos of the infants upon birth. I was curious whether Selkie is just an unusual name to match an unusual child, or whether Selkie is actually somehow magical or fantasy-linked. Regardless, I’m really loving this story so far and can’t wait to read more!
Oh, wow. I did the google search, and I can’t imagine what I would do if I had a child born with this condition. Love them and pray, I suppose.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it, thank you for reading. 🙂
Yosh!! Bonus sketches!!! Oh wow, she’s actually concerned about Selkie. How maternal and protective of her. I just thought she could kick serious butt! I am happily surprised.
Just caught up, it’s pretty fun so far. ^_^ Definitely bookmarked and in good company as I see your link list includes Blip, QC and Hark, a Vagrant! Looking forward to more, I love Selkie and her ‘Heys’.
Oh, poor Selkie. 🙁
HUSH YOUR MOUTH, LILLIAN, let him adopt Selkie. >:(
Once again, amazing updates. Looking forward to more!
I’m gonna CRY…
Do her Parents live in Innsmouth?
This is the page that really hooked me.
Your writing and your timing are spot on. Heartbreaking and hopeful, all in two brilliant panels. Just wonderful.
Thanks for making such a sweet comic.
Posted a link on my comic page.
