TODD: So, she's here?
ANDI: Yeah. But I don't think she's up for meeting my ex yet. So...
TODD: Right. I AM LEAVING! I, THE EX-BOYFRIEND, AM VACATING THE PREMISES!
ANDI (laughing): Go on, scram! Nobody wants you, loser!
TODD: Ooooh noooo, my feelings!
ANDI (aused): Ha ha.. god. That dork.
JESSIE: ...He's actually gone, right?
ANDI: Yes, dear. Now stop being shirtless in my daughter's room.
JESSIE: I'm sorry!!! It was the first open door I saw, you bully!
ANDI: Yeah. But I don't think she's up for meeting my ex yet. So...

Gonna be a bit more verbose than usual on the Secret Commentary today because (1) it's a m ilestone strip, why not? and (B) there's a bit of history behind this one that might be fun to discuss. So, the bit you're seeing here, covert dating partner hiding from discovery, was originally a scene I conceived back during the Todd/Mina storyline. The original concept for the Todd/Mina arc was that they start secret-dating, but keep jumping through hoops to avoid discovery. This one specifically was originally written up as follows: Selkie is out with the grandparents, they drop her off back home earlier than expected. Todd puts on the act, greets everyone, "Welcome home!" etc, and after his parents leave he makes some excuse for Selkie to go out of the apartment for a moment. After she leaves, Mina (from her hiding place behind Todd's bed) peeks over his mattress. "Is she gone?" The core reason I never pursued that evolution of the Todd/Mina arc, is that I never reached a point where it felt right that Mina would date a student's parent. Progressing it beyond flirting and maybe coffee just never felt like something that was in Mina's character. Todd would probably not be fully aware of the ramifications of such a relationship, so it made sense for him to pursue it, but Mina is an experienced professional teacher, and I felt like in her heart she knew it was a bad idea. So why revive the idea here? Because making a risky stupid and potentially terrible life choice is something that DOES feel right for Jessie's character. It makes more sense as an action she would take, than one Mina would take. Let the rollercoaster begin.
Holy crap, I was thinking this, but I would not have called it.
Yeah, I was thinking it too, but I was like “naw, we’ll see in a comic or 3, I’ll just wait”. Let the choir of “called it!”s begin. :p
Well! I was hoping it would be Jessie but I never thought it would happen. I really think Andi and Jessie work well together, but something tells me this is going to end in a mess.
Here’s hoping it’s a mess where at worst it ends with, “You know, we had a lot of fun, even if we’re not a long-term item.”
I wondered. I think they’ll be adorable together. 🙂
Congrats.
XD Not what I was expecting but woo! That’s awesome! Go Andi! :3
Gratz on 1500 comics, btw! 😀
AAAAAaaaaaAAAAH! I was right!
Topless risque for the 1500… not the call I would have made.
Well okay, not really risque, more ‘awkwardly cute’…
I flip-flopped on it, but settled on sticking with the idea for (1) the “awkward-situation” humor and (B) It’s not showing anything that wouldn’t most likely be visible during the water park visit anyway.
That’s my argument over wearing bath sheets at the computer after a shower, but my mom doesn’t accept “I show more skin in a bathing suit” (not even a bikini, a full swimsuit) as valid reasoning.
Eh. I went to school in a small town. Many teachers had their own kids or stepkids or kids of a boyfriend/girlfriend in classes. Jessie isn’t even Amanda’s direct teacher. This doesn’t have to be a disaster or even inappropriate.
In pre-school, one of the teachers was my grandmother. In elementary school, one of our teacher’s was my ex’s grandmother. I was either distantly related or closely related to like, a fifth of the teachers from my high school. On top of that, I had one teacher that had also taught my mom, dad, and aunt when they were all in school. At some point, it becomes hard NOT to have some kind of outside relationship between a teacher and a student’s parents.
Not to mention, when it comes to dating, teachers typically like kids and you want to be with someone who has similar interests to you, which means dating someone who has or likes kids. There’s also studies on how people will often tend to date someone they’re around often, like in their workplace.
when it comes to dating, teachers typically like kids
Was wondering where that sentance was going.
Yeah, I should have thought more about the structure of my sentence. Oh well. Mistakes happen, but hopefully someone with dark humor got a chuckle out of it at least.
I went to school in a large city, and same. In high school with 500 students per graduating class, about 20 of the teachers had 1 or more kids taking their classes.
CAAAAALLLLLLLED IIIIIITTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!
waaayyyyy back when they realized they were neighbors and she had the pan-pride haircolors I caed it! Woot! I was right! Yaaaaassss
I’m trying to find that one. You got a link or a date?
I wanna be Jessie’s girl!
Just don’t become Jessie’s Girl 2
NEVER!!! Also those two are freaked adorbs
… he forgot to ask about the water park
Yes! Now will he have to go back up and now find out who the mystery girl is?
I think he’s just leaving long enough to not be around as the new girlfriend flees, as Andi did say they weren’t ready to meet Todd yet. He’s probably going downstairs to find the girls, waiting for a text from Andi saying it’s okay, and will ask when he brings the girls back up.
Congrats for the 1.5k
Woo hoo congrats on 1500 pages! That is an amazing feat and we are all very proud of you. This is one of my favorite comics that I read every update as it come out (some things I let build for a week or two and then read, but you I sometimes stay up late to get the update when it drops). I just want to thank you for writing such a compelling story about adoption, and one that is very respectful and understanding of all the issue that come with adoption.
Also, so jazzed that her new possible-girlfriend is Jessie. glad she ditched the shoe queen.
Many grats on 1,500. May the next 1,500 be as good or, we all hope, even better ;-).
I have only 10 comics I check the day they come out, with Selkie being the one I anticipate all day while working (In UK, so not up here until about 18.00).
You have the skill to weave multiple plot threads without losing track of where you are going with them, as well as your own distinctive art style that works so well with the SF elements of the story.
Roll on Monday.
You’re not letting this school year finish to keep Todd and Mina apart, aren’t you?
CALLED IT.
Congrats on 1500 strips!
Oh wow! I had a hunch it would be Jessie!
Congrats on 1500 pages!
Meh
Grats on 1500!
Congratulations on 1500!
I think they started dating around 1091?
OK, can’t say I’m surprised; this was a more likely outcome than the one I predicted in #1499. But sometimes it’s more fun to bet on the long shots.
Congrats on 1500 strips!!!
I’m confused. Did Jessie break up with her previously-seen girlfriend Alexis, or do they have an open relationship where also dating someone else is okay, or is Jessie cheating on her?
Last time we saw them they were having a fight, but that doesn’t always equal a breakup; but it’s also been at least long enough in-universe for Andi to have made an art installation out of the ‘shoe stabbed into a wall’ idea from walking past the aftermath of that fight, so Jessie and Alexis could’ve still broken up in the past few months even if that fight wasn’t the breakup.
Pages 266 and 267 if anyone needs a reminder.
Having tracked down the scene, yeah, I guess it does look like they broke up back then, it was just easily forgotten since it hasn’t come up since.
I assumed she broke up with her immediately, considering that Alexis’ ‘prank’:
A. Could have potentially cost Jessie her job.
and
B. Was at the expense of children.
Also the fact she didn’t even properly apologize. I just hope Alexis doesn’t make things difficult for Jessie and Andi if they do decide to pursue the relationship. Scorned exes and all that.
What page was the fight/prank?
The math problem on page 254 is the start of the ‘prank’ storyline, and the fight happens on pages 266/267. (Nearly eight and a half years ago in real-time.)
Thank ye!
I’m a bit late but will confirm that, yes, the “shoe-wall-stab” scene was their break-up. Sabotaging the school assignments was Jessie’s last straw.
This is going to get more awkward before it gets less awkward isn’t it? 😛
What page was that?
This reminds me. How did Jessie go from Wool Mart to teacher? If that story was ever explored, I don’t remember it.
I think Wool Mart was a summer job and Dave brought Jessie in as a student teacher so she could be a reoccurring character. (Page 121)
The Wool-Mart gig was just Jessie finishing out her “summer job” before she could begin properly Assistant Teaching.
Brilliant:) And congrats, Dave! Goals achieved!
