I just realized; if George and Te Fahn are too young to be in love, then were we really were just misinterpreting it the whole time? Were they really just hitting it off as friends?
They seem to like each other, probably have a mutual crush, they aren’t in love – not just because they are seven but also because they hung out for like a week at this point.
Jessie may be extra aware of Lesbians, but really, I don’t think (I hope not) that she’s gonna get into that with Todd. Not sure what she’s over heard, school kids are sometimes amazingly oblivious to where the teacher/Aide is standing.
I’m waiting for Georgie’s response.
Even if Te Fahn was actually the one Selkie sent flowers to, concluding she’s lesbian is premature. It’s more likely the other students would tease, taunt, or bully her about it, using that word, than that a teacher would seriously draw conclusions about her sexual orientation. Some people know they are lesbian, gay, or bisexual that early. They should be the one to bring it up,if they choose to share.
Also,Georgie treats Te Fahn similarly to how he interacts with Selkie. I think he likes her and wants to be his friend. There’s no indication they have romantic feelings for each other.
As Mikael noted, even if they were teenagers or adults, they barely know each other. They haven’t spent any time together without other people around.
Not to mention, girl/girl relationships in some cultures (like Japan) are normal for even heterosexual girls, as practice for “the real thing” once they’re grown up. There’s no reason to conclude sexual orientation from interactions before the kids even have a sex drive.
Yeah, this is the part where I am still mad at how the school handled it. Selkie did wrong, but bringing those flowers into the room and making a production out of it in front of the class is what caused the hurt and embarrassment here. Don’t get me wrong, Selkie absolutely screwed up…but the principal made the whole thing worse than it had to be. (I know, Rule of Drama, but having had teachers pull this kinda thing on me in school makes it a bit hard to see without grumbling. Humiliation is not a good teaching tactic, people.)
If humiliation is not a good tactic, then WHY is(was) it used so much in Primary school?
(Singing) They tried to tell us we’re too young to ung, to young to really be in love, they say that Love’s a word, a word we’ve only heard….
Well, yes, Georgie, you can have the next turn at the Piñata. Yes, it looks a lot like Selkie, doesn’t it! Here’s your stick.
Sometimes, because they don’t know any *better* ways to deal with it. Sometimes, because they get caught wrong-footed and react badly. And sometimes, because they’re assholes who like making kids cry.
I mean, if it hadn’t happened this way, Selkie wouldn’t have learned not to try and force two people together without even talking to them because she was trying to ‘help’ them. The road to ruin is paved with good intentions and what not. She most likely would have escalated this much more if she hadn’t been stopped. This is a hard, humiliating lesson, but it’s still a lesson.
With the way Te Fahn is acting, she definitely figured out the flower thing is about her feelings for Georgie. Now I wonder if she thinks Selkie did it to humiliate her or if she actually figured out that it was just a really incompetent scheme…
I bet Selkie is never ever sick at sea. Well. Hardly ever.
Unlike now. She’s realizing the full scope of how badly this plan has gone, I think. 🙁

Oh shoot I forgot. Is Jessie gonna tell Todd that Selkies lesbian?

The same has been true of guy/guy relationships at very times/places. Hans Christian Anderson’s bisexuality wasn’t considered immoral, just childish.

Because a lot of crappy people cling to That’s How It’s Always Been Done.
Combine that with “I was treated like crap when I was a kid. Now it’s my turn.”

Heh, I used to sing Tolkien’s “Errantry” poem to the tune of “Major General” as a party piece.
Yeah, all my family are geeks. I’m so lucky!
Indeed, you’re Very lucky!
I would that all families get along and joy in each other’s talents. (Sigh!)

In the last panel, Jessie looks like she’s doing the pee-pee dance.
Well, the situation is about as awkward…

Unfortunately she humiliated someone else, too.

I agree. It should have been handled more discreetly, with checking the card for names beforehand.
Wrong musical, I think.
“Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match! Find me a find! Catch me a catch!”
Great. Now I’m going to have Fiddler songs in my head all day.
Also, I just noticed the Fiddler On The Roof and Fellowship Of The Ring have the same abbreviation. Coincidence? I think probably.
Major like Catch-22.
