In which the Smith family decides to converse over carbonated beverages. If by “decide” you mean “gently coerce”.
Also, for those who missed it, I uploaded a Sketch Day update yesterday that shows (what would have been) a month-long side arc where we watch a silly cartoon. Hop back with the Previous button if you missed the silliness!
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
…His middle name is Marion? *giggles like a five year old*
lol. you giggling like a five year old has me giggling! :p
Hey, if the name ‘Marion’ worked for John Wayne, it can work for Todd! Of course, he didn’t use it in the movies, so it didn’t exactly work–I’m gonna shut up now.
Here, isn’t Double D from Ed, Edd and Eddy’s middle name the same?
Lol his dad is so funny!
I love it, an apology soda.
Still can’t get enough of this comic, Come home from a sweet Magic: The Gathering party….Just getting ready to crawl into bed because I work in the morning and BOOM! O…M…G…it’s Thursday….I need to jump out of bed race to my computer and check the update a.s.a.p.. You know…not many things in this world would make me do such a thing, so what you got here is something special and I think a lot of your readers would agree with that. Keep on being amazing Kind Sir, keep on being our hero<3!
I’m glad to see someone else does this. XD Midnight hits and I start going over my whole repertoire for the day.
Um… Dave? How can I email you without using Outlook? I have a bit of fan art I would like to send you but every time I click the “Email Me!” link it tries to open Outlook.
Never mind, I figured it out. I’m kind of slow on the uptake sometimes. :/
LOL for the strip:) And if anyone questions why a health nut might have sodas… I keep diet sodas in my house sometimes. I don’t drink the stuff, nor does my husband or daughter. It’s for guests and my mom:)
Hmmm. I’m gonna guess that Selkie is a Deep One from the Cthulhu mythos ;).
Keep up the good work Dave. This comic has just the right mix of kooky and touching to make it awesome.
Yeah, we keep wine in the house for guests so I can serve it with food, but I personally hate alcohol… alternatively, he just said he’s a vegetarian, not a health nut, so Soda would make fair sense. Could be that he prefers to not eat the flesh of living things, since he need not… nobles oblige and all that, as opposed to “vegan is healthy”.
Love that last panel cover/sneakysmile thing for Todd~
Tangent, that’s an interesting hypothesis. I personally wonder how she ended up in that orphanage in the first place, and why she keeps having that dream. It’s really bugging me.
It’s a deep sea dweller witness protection program. 😉
Long time reader, shy commenter – sorry about that – but I just HAD to drop a line and say I’m loving Todd in the last panel. I think just about every kid has tried that tactic once or twice, with the exact same expression! (Goodness knows I have.)
Welcome to the comment boards. 😀
I’m becoming very fond of these people you’ve created–keep up the good work!
Converse, coerce, it’s all the same in families.
“You’re amazing and I love you?” Hahaha, way to suck up Todd. Apology sodas will fix all!!!
…Wow. I can’t believe it’s only been a day since Todd adopted Selkie. It seems like weeks.
BAHAHAH! I’ve done the “you’re awesome and I love you” tactic so many times it’s not even funny……..except for that hysterical giggling at the start there. Pretend that didn’t happen, k?
I love Todd’s family more and more… although the more I read this the more I just have to ask… what races are his adopted brother and sister? I know it probably sounds like a really awkward question, but I have this really great mental image of a very colorful first family photo, you know?
No problem with the question. Marta is latina/hispanic-american, and Antoine is black/african-american.
Man I don’t remember any mention of a brother and sister. Now I’ll have to go back and reread the entire comic.. ohhh.. *moan* such a chore… *back breaking labor* not sure I can handle that! Why do I get stuck rereading the cutest comic to come out in a long time!?.. Why God!? You’re so GOOD to me! *snickers*
Very nice work establishing Todd’s relationship with his parents. I look forward to seeing them develop as characters; you’ve done a good job of showing (not telling) us their quirks and virtues.
I’m so confused! I’ve been following this comic for a while now, and I keep hoping we’ll get some clarification about “Oh, yeah, she’s blue. But it’s cool…??”
Is her species common in this universe? Considering everyone’s surprise at seeing her, I’d guess not. But then why doesn’t the government have her in a freaky lab?
My suspension of disbelief is wearing thin.
Rest assured, I’ll get to that information in time. Right now, we simply haven’t met any characters who know anything about what she is or where she comes from.
I should think Mrs. Haversham-Zhang know some of the answers. She has known Selkie a long time and even speak her language (or some words of it).
It isn’t unreasonable to think that she must have met Selkies mother and know something about why Selkie was left in the orphanage.
Another Daawww, and about the adults this time. They are all so cute.
Do keep up the good work. I am considering doing a reb review site for webcomics. This would definitly go on the good review list.
A Web review. and hopefuly with all the right spelling.
Oh that’d be awesome! ^^
I’ve been reading Selkie for quite a long time (I think when I stumbled on the comic, Todd had just found out Selkie was drawing vomit fish =P), but I haven’t commented before now.
I just wanted you to know that I absolutely love your comic, Dave, especially as Selkie’s species and functionality has clearly been so well thought out. And it’s great to see how well Todd has bonded with her – to the point of risking the Wrath of Mom to say it’s really no big deal she’s not human. *g*
Please keep drawing the comic, I really want to see where this story is going!
You got it! 😀
I find it hilarious how mothers of adult sons can so ably pull the guilt card on them and how it works even better than when we were still living at home.
Seems the author and I have had similar experiences, judging by the last panel :P.
*sigh* lol
Hey, I’m a new reader here and this has made it into my lists of top comics….(Its a very long list :P) and from another comic which I read on I was wondering if you would consider having a DAILY post of comic strips for as a holiday treat like on Christmas? or any other big holiday? Love Selkie by the way, wish I was like her.
I was re-reading the archives and it occurred to me…I have a scanner now; I should do a new fan art piece. 😀
It’s actually really good that I like this comic more for the story rather than the art, though you do a far better job thn I ever could, I can agree that arms at funny angles can be a pain to draw.
Keep up the good work man, you’re keeping this fan.
I love the comic. Some other site I visit frequently had a link to one of the early comics. To show how gulible I am I copied my favorites when you posted the April Fool strip. I hope you keep i going a long time.
LOVE this page! You’ve shown us that Todd Marion has a wonderful and loving family over the past several pages and made us really connect with them. That dynamic really comes out here. (I’m posting this just before I read the next page, btw – Didn’t want to come back if there’s something that spoils my comment! LOL)
Oh, BTW … I loved the “secret commentary” on this one … excellent behind the scenes kind of info. BUT! With it being so long, and it staying viewable for a short time (even without moving my mouse), I had to hover to have it pop up several times in order to read it. Just wondering if there’s a way to have it stay up a little longer?
Todd’s “sheepish-guilt” face in the last panel is amazing.
I wonder if Selkie can drink root beer… and if not, what can she drink? Most fruit juices are out, obviously. Overly sweet foods either can’t be tolerated… or she just finds the flavour disgusting (or both).
…Oh Jay-Z… do you even realize what the US food industry puts High-Fructose Corn syrup into? EVERYTHING!
It’s added to deli meats to preserve them longer. Also since livestock is now almost completely factory farmed and feed constant corn (look up CAFOs) even the meat itself is unhealthily saturated with corn. (You can actually see the corn molecules in the beef and pork under a microscope). Maybe that last part is too diluted to adversely affect Selkie, but I could easily imagine her stomach bringing back up the corn-sweetened deli meats.
