Bickering like S-Words.

Got a Fan Art update to share! Courtesy of Theresa, who provided one for Universe A:
And based on the April Fools joke from Strip number 91, one for Universe B:
These made me laugh out loud at work. XD Thanks, Theresa!
STOPS COPIES ME! STOPS COPIES ME!
Oh, no. Reader’s Digest: Children’s Version … so close and yet so far away.
Also: LOVE that fan art, both versions! 😀
Yay, Amanda said “OUR”!
Shouldn’t that be “Stops copyings me”, instead of “copies me”?
Nope.
No, I think it’s a reference to one of the characters from Metalocalypse (still don’t know if I’m spelling the title right but that’s not the point) who has an odd speech pattern. I can’t remember what country he’s from, but instead of saying “Stop copying me” he says “Stops copies mes”.
Forgot to add this–my brothers are way into that show and watch it all the time around me and often quote it.
When did Selkie get the impression they were trying to date? Well, Andi is trying, but i doubt Todd could completely conceal his anger toward Andi in front
of Selkie.
Maybe they’re just assuming that. Kids make assumptions like that a lot.
That’s what I understood. Kids can be privy to information that the adults won’t share openly, but they don’t always have the right take on how it all works.
Also, Todd & Mina just got a *wee* bit more complicated. Potentially. Hope she grasps the concept of sorta-divorced faster than sitcoms would let her.
(Of note, there’s a spot in Girl Genius wherein a completely erroneous piece of information could completely derail the romance subplot, and it looked for all the world like it was going to happen and drag out an already long subplot to epic levels.
And then the main character’s mentor showed up just long enough to tell the romantic lead what was going on. And my reaction was kind of “Wait, they can DO that?!” It was an unexpected pleasure that they got the miscommunication out of the way (paving the way for a completely different kind of miscommunication with a different character, which was much better).)
Wait, which event are you talking about (Girl Genius is loooong)? And who exactly counts as Agatha’s mentor at this point?
I remember that. It was when Zeetha informed Gil of the truth about Agatha and her mother
Mina, is that a judging raised eyebrow there? It sure looks like one.
no, it’s a SPOCK Eyebrow… though Dave, you flubbed the lines, it should have been “…interesting…”
That looks more like an argument. Even Mina can tell that. :/
Mina can think that Todd kissed that woman without asking, hence the argument.
I doubt that. Especially by Todd’s body language alone.
Easy Mina =/ Get your story straight first.
I think she will, but there’s probably some annoyance that Todd has not told her that he has a kid with another woman. She’ll do what most women do, and talk to him about it. Find out he barely found out himself.
The worst I can see is her deciding Andi is some kind of romantic rival for Todd, which she’s not, but Mina doesn’t know that yet.
NOPE!… Rule-of-Funny says she WON’T get it straight… I’ll bet that in the time she tells the kids to get to class, and go closer to the parents, she will miss seeing (but WE won’t miss) Todd get visibly calmer (he’s going to at least TRY to be civil, you know) and as she gets closer she’ll hear Todd tell Andi something along the lines of “ok, come over about 7-ish” and she’ll immediately jump to the conclusion that Selkie was right!, AND that Todd was a real two-timing jerk for giving her a kiss when he’s making the moves on ANOTHER girl at the same time…
OF COURSE this is going to get misinterpreted… It’s GOT TO, we wouldn’t have any narrative tension otherwise, and have a boring dull Comic if it DIDN’T…
Mina why do you care? He came onto you and you dumped him like a sack of potatoes. For personal reasons, for good personal reasons, but STILL. You DID.
Actually she hasn’t. Not yet, I believe she was planning that for this afternoon.
And nothing makes a woman fight harder for a guy than another woman sniffing around. Even if she WASN’T interested at first. Respect to Mina for having had a crush at least. #truth
Now, Mina, you’re a teacher. You should know better than to take kids at their word. Little Bobby doesn’t really have a pet dinosaur, either.
I love the species-swap art. Dave when you get some free time you should make some official species swap art yourself. I really adore the concept design for the fish-people.
Okay but did anyone else notice “our Mom and our Dad”? Not “my Mom and her Dad”, not “my Mom and our Dad”. Amanda’s already into the sisters thing even if she hasn’t noticed yet 😀
Amanda is the only one of the two that could make that (technically incorrect, since Selkie is not related to Andi) statement since she has access to the evidence needed to prove it.
I’m always glad to see Universe B come into play.
From what I understand about foster care, the moment a care situation seems remotely stable, young kids are likely to latch on to members of the household and bond with them. Given that the orphanage situation is stable and they have spent some years in it, and especially given that there are no clear persons to designate at Mum and Dad, the kids from the orphanage are already going to be strongly bonded as a sibling gang. Kids need family and will do their best to make one. So my take on this is that Amanda and Selkie have been sisters all along and their rivalry involves a certain amount of evil-twin projection. That is, one part of the reason Amanda loathes Selkie is that she is projecting on her all the things she suspects about herself but doesn’t want to face; Amanda deep down likely thinks that she is a physically unappealing freak, grabs all the attention and is an unlovable monster, alien to the family of her own that she wants so badly. But these thoughts and feelings are too difficult to handle so she has projected them onto Selkie. It is safer to be mean to her than to experience self loathing.
Oh, that’s interesting. I like that.
Uh oh. I think Selkie just became an unwitting instigator of doom.
Aw dangit, don’t discourage Mina, she’s so much better than Andi for Todd. Pleeeeeease no.
Also not sure how the kids could have misinterpreted the situation this badly. Though luckily this can be cleared up rather easily, not sure why she even looks so upset, she turned him down before all this.
Well, as to why the kids have misinterpreted, this is kind of speculative, but although the girls were watching the octopus when Andi put her hand on Todd’s leg, they might have seen a reflection of it in the glass. Todd was trying so hard to refrain from exploding that they would not have observed much negative reaction on his part. More likely, in Amanda’s case anyway, she’s been listening to Andi fantasizing all weekend. “Maybe we can all go to a movie together!” As for Selkie, Todd’s been so careful not to unload adult concerns onto her young shoulders that she may not have much of a clue how angry he is with Andi.
***
Mina “turned Todd down” because he was totally inappropriate with her at her place of work. Doesn’t constitute a permanent boot to the exit.
I think you’ve nailed it. As for the “tryings to dates agains,” even if Selkie didn’t see any reflection of Andi’s gesture, she has witnessed Andi’s facial expressions and body language. Andi definitely does want Todd back, and it shows. All the time. Selkie has been told they used to date; it’s clear to her that Andi is trying to date Todd again.
And, as you say, Todd’s been so careful about protecting her that she doesn’t know how angry he is with Andi, and what a total non-starter Andi’s fantasy is.
As far as Amanda is concerned — both girls, actually — what’s really bothering them is the notion that they’re expected to be sisters.
I’m afraid our two cats can relate…. 🙁
Andi isn’t going to end up with him. She’s already burned that bridge she’s trying to cross. She’s done.
Poor Mina!
There’s a big steaming quid for her quo
I’m reasonably confident that Dave’s not going to let this particular misunderstanding drag on for sitcom-level durations.
At the very least because Mina’s going to have a meeting with him this afternoon and this would be high on her list of “What are you THINKING?!” questions, even before putting the personal factor in. She knows about Amanda’s issues, she’s probably at least somewhat aware of Amanda’s part in The Shirt Incident, so she should know what a minefield this is about to be, too. (Which hopefully means Todd can explain things and maybe get some needed “she WHAT” sympathy.)
I’m of conflicting opinions about that line of thought… on one hand I’d LOVE for it to be drawn out for ages, because that would mean we keep HAVING this comic for ages… but on the other hand, i agree that in that i don’t want him to drag it out for ages because there is the chance that it’ll become a boring, wtf-when-will-the-torture-end? kind of thing, that while reading thru it in an archive binge is more … tolerable, i guess, but having to LIVE through it as a weekly comic, UGH!… and then a bunch of people may drop out of reading the comic for good… I’m not sure, yet, where I’d fall in that category…
… Oh dear.
Todd seems to be doing the smart thing and walking away in the first panel, while Andi is making a “… what?” expression. Yet in the last panel they seem to be arguing in the background.
About the only viable conclusion is that Andi /once again/ said something emotionally tone-deaf along the lines of “dammit, Todd, I’m trying to restart our relationship, why are you being difficult?”
Why, Selkie, why?
The S being for “sisters”, am I right? 😛
Bickering like sisters. What could top that?
