Been meaning to make a vector template background for that kitchen for awhile. Finally did it for this strip. May add a few more details to it for later use though.
Agreed. Smart phones weren’t around when I was a kid. I could see maybe pranking someone by taking their phone and messing with it. But bragging to a parent about it? And all the new swear words she learned? That would not have gone over well at all in my family.
Especially since she doesn’t seem to realise that Rachel was doing anything wrong. So it wasn’t any sort of ‘punishment’ or cry for attention, she caused trouble for the heck of it.
I once had a sitter who always came over with a female “Friend”. They would then lock themselves in my mother’s bathroom and just have sex the entire time she would otherwise have been watching us. Hurrah!
the babysitter of me and my younger brother was never a who but a where. my parents used to drop us off at either the library if it wasnt close to our birthdays or christmas and if it was present shoping time we were put in barnes and nobles. either way we just sat and read till my parents came in and asked what we were so in to. some times we might just see that book we didnt get to finish under the christmas tree.
I would have killed to have been plunked down in the library when I was little … now I am plunked down in the library, but I’m expected to do homework.
A comic shop I used to go to had the same thing happen all the time. Parents took the kids there, leave them to do as they please while they shopped or ran errands.
The comic store in my home town had that too. He installed a tv down the front of the store and played campy, bloody non English horror movies and put a parental advisory notice of the door. After that he usually only got saddled with tweens and they usually had a little pocket money to spend so it all worked out.
Dude!… he could have made big bucks if his “parental advisory” stated that if children are found unattended that they would be sold into slavery… why’d he have to go and cut off a lucrative market opportunity like that?! 😀
Don’t blame the comic shop owner, but at least it’s the sort of place you can expect kids to amuse themselves. My sister worked for a lingerie chain called La Senza. Mothers would just walk in with their toddlers and let go their hands at the door while they went shopping. Kid pulls a shelf down on his head and the mother is screaming at the shop girls like it’s THEIR fault.
You’d be surprised. My sister found a website with a list of different racial slurs that have been used, and found the list to be pretty large. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is one for curse words.
That being said, it’s always good to learn a new language. Hell, that’s how I learned English ;).
When I was a kid we moved to lots of different countries, some of which did not have English as an official language. The first thing we learned were the swear words, one so we didn’t “accidentally” swear at someone, ad second so we would know when we violated local custom egregiously enough to make someone swear. I used to swear quite fluently in the Moroccan dialect of Arabic.
Yet more proof that Selkie’s just a typical kid. 😀
Also Crook’s smile as he’s being pet by Selkie is *adorable*. I’m glad they became great friends despite initial mutual misgivings.
The calls for death are a thing I took with a grain of salt and chose not to interpret literally. Childhood bullying memories are a thing that the comic periodically (and unintentionally) triggers in people, but the Tommy the Truck arc brought out a lot of really hurtful memories in people that I think they attach to Truck as the story’s bully. Him committing physical assault doesn’t help that matter, either.
Also, just throwing this out there, but songs deleted off most phones are not actually GONE. They’re usually still on the home computer and just need to be re-uploaded. In the worst case scenario you either need to redownload them from the online/mobile platform you bought them from (which is free to do if you’ve already purchased them once), or re-copy the music from your CDs onto your computer.
Gaben:
I assume you’re referring to me with the “LOL typical kid” reference.
To which I would add that I WAS ONE OF THOSE FOLKS REPRIMANDING MY FELLOW COMMENTERS FOR THEIR CONDEMNATION OF TRUCK.
maybe, just maybe, if you *ACTUALLY* read the comments and read who said what instead of just painting us all with the same damn brush, you’d realize that some of us have fucking heads on our shoulders (some of us rebuked the ones calling for punishment) and even have intelligent conversations here (from there, there have been entire threads discussing child psychology).
You know, instead of being a ******* stereotyping prude like you.
And to continue off of Dave’s point, people who are triggered (in this case by memories of being bulled themselves) become emotional and say things that are too strong, or they otherwise probably wouldn’t say when they were calm.
It doesn’t mean they’re angry bad people.
It just means they’re human.
Y’know, like all of us.
Which is why, instead of condemning them for condemning others (hmm, hypocritical isn’t that?), I’m instead being understanding that humans have emotions, and continuing to enjoy this comic.
By the way, hugs for the Selkie community. Despite whatever goes on here, when it comes down to it I can at least say that we seem to ultimately recognize and respect each other’s humanity. A sad rarity these days.
I’m sorry… i seem to be misunderstanding YOU… you think beating the crap out of somebody, enough that they get sick and have to go to the HOSPITAL!! is “roughing Selkie up a LITTLE BIT” and is a TYPICAL 8y/o behavior and that you seem to be “OK” with that?! WTF!?? I’ll agree that death threats were overboard, no argument there, but you really are a bit behind the times, as that was over a few weeks ago, why dredge it up NOW? i also think you are going overboard in that you seem to think that every teenager has “THOUSANDS of dollars” (emphasis on the ‘s’ there) worth of songs on their phones?… yeah, right! NOT… I’d love to see a kid that can have THAT much disposable income to put that much into songs for their phone… who’s to say those songs weren’t pirated songs in the first place and therefore ZERO dollars worth of songs were deleted? yes I’m ignoring the “lost money” that the Artist’s never got, that’s NOT what’s at issue here, AND I’m NOT going to go into it either, it’s N/A for this discussion… I’m talking about RACHEL not paying a dime for those songs… no payout = zero dollars “lost” when deleted, just time and effort of downloading/ ripping from cd, uploading to phone, etc… and who said that Selkie “STOLE” the phone in the first place?, she probably just snagged it when the sitter went to the bathroom, and deleted the folder of songs, or hit “factory reset” then put it back. when the sitter got out of the bathroom and tried to play the songs, oh well. how else would the sitter teach Selkie some new words? heck Rachel could have blamed it on the phone company pushing out an “update” that screwed with her settings and deletes things that are not the phone company’s “default”. and she probably DID, because Todd seems to be in the dark about this incident until Selkie told him about it… therefore if Rachel thought that Selkie did it, I’m sure that she would have told him about it for “Official Parental Disapproval”… she didn’t, therefore she didn’t blame Selkie for it… but screwing with somebodies phone, yeah THAT behavior IS more typical of the 8-yo’s that I’ve seen. granted, in my mind it’s still a grounding/spanking offense when caught at it, but look at it from Selkie’s perspective: Rachel is being paid by Dad to watch HER, NOT text her boyfriend all night, and if deleting that stuff off of Rachel’s phone will get her to pay more attention to HER (Selkie) and DO HER JOB, then i know kids that are tech-savvy enough and just ornery enough to do DO it too… i know that “I” would have if i could.
Why not? I just did and it wasn’t aimed at me. Also some very good points in it about how Rachel probably didn’t have thousands of dollars of music on her phone nor that she permanently lost them. Also that Truck could have killed Selkie and that’s what set everyone off.
um, YES, yes i DO expect you to read it, as i was kind enough to read your opinion and was moved enough to comment on it, i would like the same amount of respect from you to at least read mine… we may not AGREE with the the others opinion, but we should always be willing to read/hear the others persons side first, before we make our minds up.
I thought you made some good points scantrontb. Gaben is just another troll. Says he’s disgusted about the overreaction to Truck putting Selkie in the hospital, a fair point as there was an actual overreaction. Then get’s disgusted with us smiling at Selkie’s mischief resulting in a minor inconvenience for Rachel. Then acts like he shouldn’t read a full comment. Just another troll. And not a clever one.
Gaben, when my 8-year-old neighbor deleted some stuff off my phone by fiddling with it without permission when I was babysitting him and his sister one day last summer, I simply restored the items during my next sync. No songs or apps lost becuase they were all in my account; I suspect most folks phones work the same way for anything purchased. Now, if I could just get rid of all traces of that stupid freebie demo racing game he managed to download…
I think that’s the table-leg from the background, look up in the second panel, maybe the background should be blurred or something? It looks a bit strange.
But yeah, Blue Coyote’s correct, that’s the chair leg. Her head is obscuring the rest of the chair. I may go back and remove that when I get home, or pull the chair to the side a bit, because now I can’t unsee bloody spittle. XD
The best Do not leave your child in my store sigh I ever saw was in an antique place that specialized n collectable toys. “Unattended children will be given a double latte and a free puppy.”
I was doing some unpacking of my car when a bunch of kids surrounded me. I shouted to the neighbors to get their kids and the parents shouted back nah, I got this. They expected free babysitting duties from me. I happened to have a bunch of chocolate covered coffee beans. I gave them to the kids, who ate them in an instant, and sent them to their parents saying I wasn’t going to babysit them. Never got my good nature presumed on again.
I work with cellphones, and every month customers come in with wide eyes and a malfunctioning phone, and questioning reveals they let kids play with it the previous day.
Remember kids, you are not having a good day, if you’re not learning new curse words 😀
Ah yes, babysitters… I remember them well. The fun we had – Muwhahaha!!!
wow, didn’t know Selkie was such a brat
Agreed. Smart phones weren’t around when I was a kid. I could see maybe pranking someone by taking their phone and messing with it. But bragging to a parent about it? And all the new swear words she learned? That would not have gone over well at all in my family.
Uh, yeah, that was rather nasty of her 🙁 I’m surprised, and not pleasantly at all.
Especially since she doesn’t seem to realise that Rachel was doing anything wrong. So it wasn’t any sort of ‘punishment’ or cry for attention, she caused trouble for the heck of it.
Eh, she just has to re-synch her phone to iTunes or whatever. It’s not like the songs are actually gone.
altternate dialouge:
S: She justs sexts her boy friend all night.
T: … Um don’t you mean TEXTS her boyfriend?
S: Nopes!

You have great parents.

I’m with Eagle, I want your parents.
Dave, I tried posting another commet, but it got flagged as spam for some reason.
Yeah the moderation filter hit it, got it approved. 😀
What a hooker.
How many new curse words are there? (Maybe if you didn’t confine yourself to *English*…)
You’d be surprised. My sister found a website with a list of different racial slurs that have been used, and found the list to be pretty large. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is one for curse words.

Go over to grrlpowercomic.com – Sydney is an expert at cursing.
That’s what I used to ask my parents: “When can I start to drive? I already know all the words!”
Yet more proof that Selkie’s just a typical kid. 😀
Also Crook’s smile as he’s being pet by Selkie is *adorable*. I’m glad they became great friends despite initial mutual misgivings.
This community disgusts me.
Truck roughs up Selkie a little bit (something completely normal for an 8-year-old) and you have people calling for his DEATH.
Yet Selkie steals her babysitter’s personal property and erases thousands of dollars worth of songs and everyone just goes, “Haha, typical kid!”
What’s wrong with you people?
The calls for death are a thing I took with a grain of salt and chose not to interpret literally. Childhood bullying memories are a thing that the comic periodically (and unintentionally) triggers in people, but the Tommy the Truck arc brought out a lot of really hurtful memories in people that I think they attach to Truck as the story’s bully. Or simply click a button that says “re-download purchase”.
You’re right Dave. I probably overreacted. Thanks for your response, and keep up the good work!
If you are disgusted by the community, I have a suggestion.
Don’t read the comments. That way you will not be exposed to all these disgusting people.
Or, even better, just go away since *ALL* of us are sooo disgusting.
Gaben:
I assume you’re referring to me with the “LOL typical kid” reference.

Also, I wasn’t referring to the songs so much as being happy about a babysitter that let’s her do whatever she wants.
*Lets
Stupid autocorrect.
TL,DR; I was the only one who used the phrase “typical kid” which leads me to believe you’re responding to me…
PLEASE don’t lump me in with those guys, cuz I personally never death-threatened Truck. Not once.
And to continue off of Dave’s point, people who are triggered (in this case by memories of being bulled themselves) become emotional and say things that are too strong, or they otherwise probably wouldn’t say when they were calm.

Too bad, we will never know if you think it is totally normal for kids to beat other kids up (remember, Selkie had to go to the hospital).

So, what is that stream of bloody spittle coming out of Selkie’s mouth in the last panel?
I think that’s the table-leg from the background, look up in the second panel, maybe the background should be blurred or something? It looks a bit strange.
PFFFT HA! Bloody spittle… Love it. 😀
But yeah, Blue Coyote’s correct, that’s the chair leg. Her head is obscuring the rest of the chair. I may go back and remove that when I get home, or pull the chair to the side a bit, because now I can’t unsee bloody spittle. XD
I first thought bloody drool, like she’d bit her tongue. But her blood’s blue.
https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie76/ Grandma’s comment, last panel.
Well give Todd points for knowing his daughter.
And here I thought Selkie had the overactive imagination lol.
… As much as she really shouldn’t, Selkie looks adorable in the last panel. Both the fantasy and the little grin.
