Either that, or it turns out that thanks to her mom’s miscalculation, all she’s got is super-headache power! Helpful for detecting Echo activity nearby and precisely nothing else.
Actually, now you have me curious about Sarnothi excretory anatomy and conventions.
When Sarnothi urinate underwater, do they have specific locations, or do they just distance themselves from others? (Or do particularly crude ones just go where they are, like kids in a swimming pool?)
Same thing with defecation: Do they have particular locations, or just “away from camp”? Or do they have some sort of Resonance-based disposal system?
Maybe I need to start applying the MST3K mantra here…
Most aquatic (advanced) animals don’t urinate per se. They do release ammonia (the big waste product that we dump via urine) by leaking it out through their gills. So they use their lungs to pee. Woo.
Freshwater fish tend to have a different mechanism for releasing excess water that could be called urination, but it’s nowhere near the same ‘waste dump’ that terrestrial life uses.
Defecation is a little more complicated. Fish waste is remarkably compact- almost rock-like in its nature. And remarkably clean (fish are high on powerful digestive acids and low on intestinal flora).
They have enough modesty to wear- and name things after- pants, so that suggests they take care of their business in privacy… but they won’t need to go through the same disposal effort humans do. It’s not going to be nearly as disgusting as we do, and there are plenty more oceanic scavengers to take care of it after.
Panel Five is gonna make the list for one of my favourite single panels in the comic ever.
There are so many different things going on in those four faces; Selkie, dying of a “migraine”;Todd, shell shocked alive and seeing things he does not yet have a security clearance for; Whatsisface (haven’t figured his name out yet – I’m slow) as underwhelmed as ever (we call his habitual expression of too disgusted by life to be cool a “fried-egg look”) and Scar, delighted and exuberant as always. Selkie is REALLY sick or she would be being extremely interested and grateful to Scar. I mean REALLY sick. Get that child a Relpax…
“Whatsisface’s” name is “Then”. No lie. It’s like the neighbor I met this summer whose name actually IS “Lie”. So, if you go back to any past dialog including “Then” that seemed a little confusing, it may make more sense now. 😉
Personally, I’m impressed nobody has done a “Who’s On First” parody, either in universe or in comments!! I’d try but I’m always too tired to be clever.
😛
You gotta “hand” it to Pants, he has every right to be pleased; he just got outta jail, had a snack, and was popping the top off of the wrapper of his pre-packaged dinner, when his wrangler came by and interrupted the feast.
and still nobody has noticed Selkie’s eyes are starting to glow.
Todd is still suffering culture shock, and shock from nearly dying, so he’s excused. At least an echo is nearby to help Selkie when someone does finally notice.
I wonder if Echos are awakened by other Echos actively using their abilities in close proximity to dormant Echos ?
in which case what if Selkie’s bow wasn’t suppressing her powers but was suppressing incoming resonance, thereby keeping her dormant.
if correct it would mean that Selkie’s mother would then be able to use her abilities in close proximity to Selkie without risking awakening Selkie’s Dormant Echo abilities.
Pohl was only told about the technology by Them
And I doubt Them fixed the technology and did a field test on an Echo.
they have a theory about what it was doing.
but never studied how it actually was working.
So I have a working theory that I’m just going to throw out there. There’s no real evidence to support it yet, but I think I know why Plo Quar tried to keep Selkie from developing her powers. I think it has to do with Selkie’s real father. I mean, until recently, we’ve never heard any mention of him, not even from Selkie herself. Heck, she’s never even seen questioning if she has a father. The first we’ve ever heard of the guy is from Gien and Scar and the others, and they think that her dad could be an Echo. Well what if he is and he’s on a different side of the war than the one Plo Quar was fighting on? What if he knew his child was going to be a strong Echo and he planned to use her to help his side win the war or something just as dastardly as that? I think that could be why Plo Quar fled with Selkie, why she hid her away in the human world and told her to wear a device that she was sure would kill her powers entirely; she was trying to protect Selkie from her own father. Like I said, there’s practically zero evidence to support all this, but that’s my two cents on the issue.
That’s a good theory. She might have been trying to protect Selkie from the jin’sorai side too since it’s obvious they want to use her as a weapon as well.
This also brings up the question if there are Jin’sorai fighting for the other side. There might have been some that disagreed with trying to start a war with the US and turned on their own clan.
Anyway, I like this theory more than Scar or Pohl being her father.
War is not the answer to problems, it is only one question out of many. Also no, No, don’t use your children as weapons, weaponizing kids is just Evil Empire kind of Bad. Just say no.
I love how none of them are even bothering to be subtle about this around Todd anymore. Like, “You just had a magic bubble on your head, the doctor zoomed off to help someone… Yeah, we’re not pretending any of this didn’t happen, or is rare, or anything. We’re just gonna make comments about it in your language.”
If anyone seen the anime Bleach or Dragon Ball, what happens to someone when a Great Weight is removed from said person? Que awesome hero action theme song!
I noticed the Sonic Sat AM reference! 🙂
I wish it had continued instead of the other Sonic Sez one. It had high stakes and better schemes from an actually evil Robotnik and his back sassing crony Snively and great writing and it ended just as it started good world building… Also, Sally Acorn >> Amy Rose.
Todd- “SO MANY QUESTIONS!”
Then- “Oh…right, you just saw all that… Ummmm… AVERY!!!”
Scar- “Did I drop the orb here?”
Selkie- “oooh my frigginhead I’m so wasted….”
Does anybody else notice Scar’s eyes are faintly glowing, perhaps in reaction to Pohl using his powers? At first I thought maybe they were reflecting Todd’s bubble helmet – but Then doesn’t have the same effect on his eyes.
I love scar so much xD
I look forward to Todd recovering from this and going geek-fanboy about it.
I can see a faint green glow in Selkie’s eyes… Are her “superpowers” about to show up?!
I noticed that too!
Either that, or it turns out that thanks to her mom’s miscalculation, all she’s got is super-headache power! Helpful for detecting Echo activity nearby and precisely nothing else.
Or she needs the restroom

Honestly, I’ve been thinking dolphin more than fish.
Since Sarnothi have mostly humanoid genitals (at least if I remember the anatomy sketch correctly), I kinda guessed they were used for excretion too.

Is your neighbor’s first name “Cake,” by any chance? 🙂
Have to agree, the facial expressions are always a treat.
Even Pants looks quite pleased with himself in panel 2.
Why isn’t Pants mentioned in the tags?
You gotta “hand” it to Pants, he has every right to be pleased; he just got outta jail, had a snack, and was popping the top off of the wrapper of his pre-packaged dinner, when his wrangler came by and interrupted the feast.
Todd’s face!
“I was prepared for aliens not SUPERHEROES!”
OMG!! That is TOO GOOD!!
😀
Why not both?
signed,
The Martian Manhunter, Beta Ray Bill, etc. . etc. . .etc. . .
Don’t forget about the #1 most popular alien superhero, Superman.
Yes he’s an alien.
—> all purpose guru: Yes, panel five has a green glow about Selkie’s eyes.
and still nobody has noticed Selkie’s eyes are starting to glow.

Then why would Pohl think that Selkie’s powers will be crippled forever?
Pohl was only told about the technology by Them
And I doubt Them fixed the technology and did a field test on an Echo.
they have a theory about what it was doing.
but never studied how it actually was working.
More likely the aura “radiation” is seeping into Selkie and breaking down the Aura suppression slightly
No, the doc doesn’t just know what it did but how it did it, infact he worked out the former from the latter.
Oh, Amanda’s face if Selkie comes back with superpowers!
Yesssssssss, the Reign of Dr. Terrorhammer begins tonight!!! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-…oh, hey Dad! I didn’t see you come in. I’ll just go to sleep now.
I love love love the dialogue in the last panel <3
Haha, Todd’s face.
He’s really had his bubble burst, hasn’t he?
(sorry, couldn’t help myself)
no… he had his HELMET burst!! 😀
I wonder who Avery has been watching during all of this
Poor Todd. You can hear his mind snapping XD

Yeah, that zoom zoom thing would be MY envy point too.
don’t stop me NOOOOW
Is no one going to point out the Siren pun in Dave’s commentary?
I am still laughing about it! I imagine a mini Selkie right on top of his head doing her EEEEEEEEeeEEEE!!!
Scar could use his powers to be the flashing light, …. Just sayin’
Look out! When he storms through…Do–Octer Pohl. Doctor! Poh can really move! Doctor! Pohl’s got attitude!
Look out! When he storms through…Do–Octer Pohl. Doctor! Pohl can really move! Doctor! Pohl’s got attitude!
So either the power is going to hurt when it finally is released. Or she’ll feel great. My vote is that this’ll sting a little.
DAVE! WHY! Why do you delight torturing us with cliffhangers like this?
I love how none of them are even bothering to be subtle about this around Todd anymore. Like, “You just had a magic bubble on your head, the doctor zoomed off to help someone… Yeah, we’re not pretending any of this didn’t happen, or is rare, or anything. He had a hologram go off in his own home and saw Sai Fen do her waterbending thing, what’s the point of keeping secrets now.
Well. Todd’s seen stuff that’s almost this weird. XD So they think he could probably handle the rest.
Big flashly ‘zoom-zoom’ lights may be more effective than a siren anyway…

Because he is maintaining the air bubble around Todd’s head so his Echo is still active but only just…thus the glow.
A Sonic reference in my Selkie?
Today’s a damn good day~
GLOWIES
Zoom-zoom? Dave, did you put a reference to Disney’s Bolt in your comic?
