Yay now everyone doubting Todd can relax. Seems like some of y’all forget he’s a really recent parent just like Andi, they’re both faaaar from perfect. They’ve both been learning as they go for less than a year, maybe less than 6 months. Give the guy a chance, he’s doing his best and she can’t avoid what makes her uncomfortable forever. Random but this last panel really makes me chuckle
they did have a lot of practice to hash out the problems
If I’ve learned anything in my 27 years it can be summed up by a quote from my uncle.
me : I feel like I’m just acting like an adult how do you guys do it?
uncle: *laughing * none of us really have our shit together. I’m a grandfather… *gestures wildly* my kids are popping out kids, I’ve been to war and still feel like I’m acting like an adult. just do the best you can.
To quote Calvin’s dad in Calvin and Hobbes: “I don’t think I’d have been in such a hurry to reach adulthood if I’d known the whole thing was going to be ad-libbed.”
I don’t know if that comment will have significance later, but it could have just been an impulsive thing to say. She knows that Selkie won’t really eat her, but that was the first thing she thought to respond with when Todd said nobody was going to eat her. Kids make comments like that a lot without really thinking about it, heck, even I still do that. Both in moments of panic and when I’m not really thinking seriously about a conversation.
If it’s not that, though, then maybe she thinks adult Selkie is capable of eating her, and maybe the adult Sarnothi will encourage Selkie to do so. Even so, I think she’s just being irrational right now and when she made that comment.
This is true. My brother accused me of wanting to eat him (I am the younger one) and to the best of my knowledge I have never shown even slight cannibalistic tendencies.
I guess that’s a callback to Selkie’s “threat” to actually do this from page 915. And given that the whole “they’ll eat me” thing was just a pretextual argument anyways, her reaction makes perfect sense to me.
Amanda doesn’t know this, but if there’s ANYONE at this dinner who has a reason to be afraid of members of her species being processed as food by the other species, it would be Carrie Thei Foh Su’Todai Brown.
What are Selkie’s thoughts on volcano-based lairs? Does inherent awesome beat likelihood of self-destruction? Or are all her lairs actually giant mecha-krackens disguised as buildings?
OMGoth, it is a real thing on the webz!! A dot.com with a list of the top 100 things Not to do if you become an evil Overloard!! Naturally at www. Eviloverlord .com. It’s a riot to read, esp. if you can remember the movies that the list refers to.
Who designs for professor X, and Bruce Wayne? And what about that creapy building in ghost busters, with the osmium or rhuthenium wires grounding all the girders? Ya gotta shop around!
Personally, I would go for a smaller breed of wildcat; probably either a geoffroy’s cat or a sand cat. They’re small, adorable, and nobody would suspect them to be ferocious killers. 😉
As a parent of 4, I can confirm that sometimes kids just need to be pushed into uncomfortable situations. My eldest was terrified of skydiving when I first brought him, but now he doesn’t say a word when I tell him it’s time for our weekly drop!
You all realize what this means, though… right? The girls have been playing together, with Selkie creating an adventure for Amanda.
That’s a big step forward. They’re still bickering, sure, because sisters do that. But they’re totally on the road to the young-adult relationship illustrated in the fanart here: https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie916/
“But the big ones are really scary” – Says the person in this comic who has done more to intentionally cause pain and suffering than pretty much anyone else, with the possibly exceptions of Truck and Andi depending on how you look at it.
The way I’m looking at this is this is a chance for her to indirectly challenge her old behaviors. Aside from her mental trauma, she picked on Selkie because she’s different. That’s pretty much why anyone is picked on, because they might move a lot, they’re quiet, they’re an orphan (more truck than Amanda there), multiple reasons why you might get picked on just because you’re different in some small but fundamental way.
Now Amanda is going into a situation where she is the other, she is outnumbered. This is why she’s scared because she knows she’s the other, she’s different. And the only regular humans are allied with the fish people. When she finds they aren’t going to pick on her or attack her, but instead greet her kindly, shyly, or with indifference she might just have to confront her assumptions and behaviors a little bit more.
I’m really surprised that the one that picked a fight with the monster kid (not Truck, the other one) is so scared now. I still have a feeling some of it is drama, sweet sweet 8 year old drama.
Not to belittle her feelings, she *does* look scared– but I think part of it is drama.
I doubt the orphanage had much in the way of files – otherwise they wouldn’t have had such trial and error for Selkie – something about them making her try peaches? And I don’t see how she could have gotten Agent Brown’s or Truck’s father’s (presumably) files.
SSR: Todd is an architect, so if Selkie done a right work with her plans, then maybe even help her to make them to more accurate for an actual building. 😀

Luckily, Mari and Theo seem to have provided an EXCELLENT example.

OK, still seems off that her response was “SHE will!”, if it’s adults that scare her.
I don’t know if that comment will have significance later, but it could have just been an impulsive thing to say. Oh, good… I’d forgotten that… THAT is gonna make Amanda feel like a heel if/when she learns… luckily Selkie doesn’t have that arrow in her quiver.
What are Selkie’s thoughts on volcano-based lairs? Does inherent awesome beat likelihood of self-destruction? Or are all her lairs actually giant mecha-krackens disguised as buildings?
Isn’t there something on the list for evil overlords about volcano lairs?
I doubt she knows that list yet

Who hasn’t designed a skull fort? It’s only weird when you are in your 30s and take them to an architect firm.
I’m not allowed in there anymore.
Picked the wrong architecture firm.
I have some contacts for you :-p
Who designs for professor X, and Bruce Wayne? And what about that creapy building in ghost busters, with the osmium or rhuthenium wires grounding all the girders? Ya gotta shop around!
If I had a cavern system below my house, I would 100% guarantee you I would have a secret lair.
Amanda, Amanda, Amanda.
Wait ’til you figure out your Father, Grandfather, Grandmother, and Aunts and Uncles are ALL total dorks.
Don’t forgery her mother also, Andi has the Dork Side in her as well. :p
*forget. Wtf autocorrect
Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
Alright, this is much more believable.
Todd. She’s literally without Andi and being pushed into a situation she’s highly uncomfortable with. What did you think was gonna happen?
Tigers? I would have gone with “sharks with frickin laser beams on their heads” myself, but to each his/her own I guess.
Sharks, while cool, are also kind of limited. Tigers got mobility going for them, they can get you anywhere.
Plus being basically giant cats, and cats are, of course, the best.
Personally, I would go for a smaller breed of wildcat; probably either a geoffroy’s cat or a sand cat. They’re small, adorable, and nobody would suspect them to be ferocious killers. 😉
Military trained Dropbears for my evil secret base.
Tigers are on level six. There are _at least_ five other levels. Plenty of room for sharks, piranhas, venomous spiders, flesh eating cockatoos, etc.
Sharks taste too good; too much of a temptation for snacks.
As a parent of 4, I can confirm that sometimes kids just need to be pushed into uncomfortable situations. My eldest was terrified of skydiving when I first brought him, but now he doesn’t say a word when I tell him it’s time for our weekly drop!
Um.
You sound like you really shouldn’t be a parent.
You all realize what this means, though… right? The girls have been playing together, with Selkie creating an adventure for Amanda.

Isn’t this how th world gets evil overlords? I mean other than getting born into Family Overlord. Sometimes it just is the family business.
I’m really surprised that the one that picked a fight with the monster kid (not Truck, the other one) is so scared now. I still have a feeling some of it is drama, sweet sweet 8 year old drama.

Maybe she’s afraid that Selkie will tattle on her for being mean and make the adult Sarnothi attack/punish her?
Then again… Amanda is a snoop. What if she secretly read Selkie’s files and knows what adult Sarnothi can do that kids can’t?
I doubt the orphanage had much in the way of files – otherwise they wouldn’t have had such trial and error for Selkie – something about them making her try peaches? And I don’t see how she could have gotten Agent Brown’s or Truck’s father’s (presumably) files.
hah, I just noticed Todd’s expression of pride in Selkie’s dorkyness in the last panel
No lie, Selkie has skilz. I would be very surprised and disappointed if she didn’t go into some kind of engineering/architecture/design field.
Hell, nobody in my school KNEW what engineering was (small rural school on the backside of the moon) but everyone knew I was gonna BE one.
Whatever they are…
Sorry, Selkie, but… You are not helping here.
