Internally, I think one of the reasons Todd is as permissive of Selkie's sass and questionable behavior as he is is that he doesn't want to discourage her from being brave enough to speak her mind bluntly.

Yet one more reason to love Todd. And that picture of Selkie pulling Todd around is adorable! Thank you
Exactly. What. I. Wanted.
Thank you Dave for giving Todd and Selkie this time together.
Now he’s gotta get PADI certified so he can buy air to do this with Selkie all the time.
“Blurbl blurbl” Dave? That reminded me of a song from a movie I saw in the 60s – Hello Down There

Questionable behavior… like what, play with me mortal and stuff? I think kids should be able to be casual with their parents and talk to them like they would to their friends, it always weirded me out when someone wants their kids to talk to them all formal like to a teacher or whoever instead.
More like tackling someone in a pool, where it would be very easy for him to fall and hit his head on the hard, slippery floor.
i think its great that todd encourages her to stand up for herself and supports her when there´s trouble, like with truck. and yeah, she *will* need a healthy self confidence to deal with the (many!) a#holes of the world. moreover, i think he´s right, sometimes just ignoring the bullies isn´t whats needed….but if you call them out on their behaviour at least some of them might think twice doing it again. heck, sometimes people aren´t even aware of their casual prejudiced a#holery until you point it out to them!
Though I agree with Todd’s point of view more than Avery’s, I can understand both sides. Yes it is important to protect them and not actively seek out trouble with others, but you do need to teach kids to stand up for themselves.
From the transcript:

I agree wholeheartedly. Selkie is gonna NEED to be strong, she’s in a situation completely not of her own making that is going to demand it.
Luckily, Mari and Theo seem to have done a pretty good job of encouraging that themselves– what with Todd growing up with blue hair and all. All of Todd’s family seem to be pretty good at speaking their mind and making it clear what they want– from Mari addressing Andi’s transgression directly, to Marta doing well in a male-dominated work environment, to Theo being willing to let the kids fight in order to gain insight into their behavior.
Todd’s punk is showing again!
Bad way of thinking.
Eh. Depends what your approach to life is. And how good you are at picking your battles.
Eh, it depends on the situation someone is in. Sometimes it’s better to be passive, sometimes aggressive. Different people react better to different approaches, sometimes ways you would least expect. It’s not really a bad way of thinking than a different way of thinking.
Todd wins best father of the year second to my own dad of course. I have to always vote for my dad for first place.
That last line may just be the most heartwarming line in the comic so far.
Yay! Soft and fuzzy! Awesome strip… Todd really is a remarkable parent
Punk is Life.
I approve of encouraging Selkie to keep being forward and assertive. There’s an art to doing it without being a jerk, but if you can, it wards off a lot of cowardice and shyness that tend to get people overlooked later in life, especially if they’re already Different to everyone around them.
This. All of this. Cuz just accepting things as they are all the time can be pretty harmful. DX
I had to fight against a shitty school that constantly broke various laws on… just about every subject imaginable.
My mother, living out-of-state at the time, having my back? That’s what got me through. As long as I was in the right, she’d do whatever it took to back me, and it made all the difference.
A parent that fights *with* you against the system is amazing when the kid’s strong enough to fight for themselves.
Agree with both sides. If you just leave things as they are, things will just stay as they are. You have to be the change you want to see. On the other hand, fighting every infraction will just burn you out and you’re no help to anyone. Pick your fights
What a nice and supportive parentic approach of being a parent of a wotld-conqueror in future… xD
Authority lets yu tell someone were to go, diplomacy is what lets you tell them in a way that makes them glad to be going there.
The version of that that I recall was something like “Diplomacy is being able to tell someone to go to hell and leave them looking forward to the trip.”
And I’m jealous: I can’t say ‘Whee!’ under water (at least not so you could understand me). Maybe if I put more ‘s’es at the end? ;-}}
Yeah, I like yours better. It has the Cute! While still retaining the brevity.
Well done.
