She’s a bit self conscious.
There is an alternate version of panel 5 that I edited because I thought it looked too silly and broke the mood. So, today comes with a deleted scene.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
I vote with you… the deleted scene is funny, but would have made panel 6 superfluous. This way works better, methinks.
Biggest implication of this:
from now on, no fan-art of Selkie will feature her with earrings.
I guess when she’s confidend enough, she might get gill rings instead
No, no, no, the alternate is better. You think the other one’s too silly ’cause you’re not a GIRL. She’s making her own ears…that’s cute, silly, and a little sad….It doesn’t break the mood at all. She’s imagining herself perfect, like every little girl does….
…I’m a girl.
But I got my dad’s big sticky-out ears, so maybe you have a point.
Don’t second guess yourself : ) that panel was perfect. My mom was born with one ear slightly bigger then the other; she had it corrected when she was about 10. She used to tell me when I’d worry about my looks how she’d try and tape it down or hide it under her hair. So this page really strikes a personal note : )
I’m starting to read Selkie with my daughter now who’s 8, I really can’t wait to get to the current pages with her. She feels a little different and can’t understand yet that that difference is what makes her so special. Please let Selkie do what she would do, kids do silly things even in serious situations. ; )
I agree with Danny, selkieone and janegirl. That’s EXACTLY the kind of thing a little girl does, without even realizing that it seems silly to adults. Don’t second-guess her, Dave, she’s a kid – and a girl to boot. 🙂
that doesn’t sound healthy…
why do grandmas… erm…. chest appendages, hang so low??
love this comic! i always await for updates.:)
Unfortunate side effect of being a mom.
y do grandmas boobs hang so low???
i love this comic! big fan from Malta 🙂
I guess she just needs a better bra.
Also, I just googled Malta. Not trying to be mean (and I hope it doesn’t come across that way), but I’ve never heard of Malta before now, very fascinating to read about a new place. Nice to meet you!
Ever hear of the Maltese Falcon?
wata??
i didnt even noticed untill you pointed it out!
weird…
aw, Selkie… be proud of what and who you are.
I think the deleted scene works almost as well, but the revision works better.
I appreciate how you show that life at even a well-run orphanage isn’t exactly a bowl of cherries, especially for a kid as different as Selkie. She’s pretty assertive and strong-willed for a child her age; it’s nice to see that balanced by some believable vulnerability.
She looks good with no ears. I’m personally self-conscious because I HAVE ears, I find myself slightly envious of her lack of them.
Ears are weird.
Well it’s not like this wasn’t shown by the anatomic update awhile back… Honestly I was surprised people kept showing her with them. Meh, I’m a stickler for universe science~
Scene looks good either way, and I’m quite happy there’s even more selkie today that usual ^_^
My guess with the coughing and stuff is that her gills are drying out. I’ve actually been waiting to see how she actually flushes out her gills. I know you explained it but its totally different to describe something and actually see it.
Like when I tell people I can shake my eyes really fast side to side. Hard to understand until you see it. And yes it does hurt. Imagine sticking your head out the window going eighty down the freeway with your eyes wide open.
I can do that eye-shake thing too! I did it once in 8th grade during a staring contest with a friend. She freaked out and accused me of being possessed. XD
lol, its even funnier if you can do a deep demon voice. I scared the heck out of some kids back in middle school. lol, one actually talked to his dad who was a pastor or something in a church. I also loved doing the alien ploy. I was always good at math and science so I’d play it up and mess with kids.
Also, your probably the fourth person I’ve heard of that can do it. I only met one other personally and frankly I thought it looked cute when she did it.
My eyes only vibrate when I don’t watch my blood sugar and I start to hallucinate. Freaks my wife out, she says it looks like I’m having REM with my eyes open.
Stupid human tricks that I can do at will though….I can dislocate my jaw, and completely disable my sense of smell. With four kids that last one came in handy *laughs*
… ooh. Gills drying out, yes. I wonder how her gills are being affected by the fact that she just vomited.
I didn’t even notice the lack of ears!
Shows how observant /I/ am.
Awwww! Poor Selkie! And her new hairstyle is so pretty too. Poor little girl. I hope things get better soon. 🙁
To answer the question that I’ve seen a few people asking, seeing as I come from a large breasted family and know what I’m in for…
Grandma’s breasts hang so low becaus grandma appears to have been a large breasted woman. Even with the best bras out there, once you hit a certain age, they’re going to sag to your knees if they’re over a c cup. Judging by their relative size, how low they’re hanging, and her body type, she’s probably at least a dubble D like most of my familly.
As Phyllis Diller (famous comedian, currently 93 years old) used to say “What do you expect? Gravity’s been pullin’ on it for 40 years.”
I’m glad you’re going realistic with the ears for your aquatic race. So many people stick elf ears on them, and I have to laugh.
Head rudders! 😛 Nah, just kidding I agree with you. 🙂
Well, obviously she has ears if she can hear what people are saying. She’s just missing pinnas (the external parts). Love her uniqueness! 🙂
I can’t believe that I didn’t notice that she doesn’t have ears before! But she still looks great without them.
I adore the deleted scene! You ought to make it the main strip, rather than an extra. It really adds something special.
and what’s so wrong with no ears?
Shockingly (:P), I kind of prefer the alternate.
It looks like she’s trying to see what she would look like with ears, rather than trying to cover that she doesn’t.
I’ll join in with those wholike the original (deleted) version. But the “regular” one is okay too.
