I’m getting that too. Kind of a “I’ll tolerate you because you adopted her” for Todd, and I’m imagining Agent Brown is a large part of his access to the tech/resources for his work. You learn how to read and understand you colleagues well in those situations.
As someone who makes hair ribbons, I can confirm that you need a surprising amount of ribbon to make a small bow. The thicker the width, the longer the length has to be to make a pretty knot.
Damn, still wish we knew more. Like alright the technology is not to be used on a permanent basis, someone should ask why. Would think Todd would at least want to know what negative effects wearing it all the time could have had on her already.
I get the idea Todd’s curiosity level and Selkie’s emotional well being are on the same scale. He may very well ask those questions of the Doc later, but this guy is new, semi-hostile, and appears to put Selkie’s emotional state in jeopardy.
Selkie just handles it better than Todd thinks she will, Todd himself has given her emotional stability that he probably took decades to recover, based on the different scenarios that put them into the orphanage in the first place.
Todd doesn’t seem like the type to go ‘rogue’ on the government, but they’re pushing him harder than they think they are. Todd isn’t a pushover, and he has a temper — that they have not tested the mettle of. Principal Hobbit did not come out well against Todd, and neither did Trunchie-poo. Todd may be the generous sort, but do Not mess with his daughter, … Or at your own peril.
If we assume, as some theories here have posed, that the energy powering the thing may come from Selkie herself and the bow has been syphoning her power to keep her hidden… Why the heck doesn’t Agent Then know or guess this? Especially how he refers to Selkie as Daughter of Artists and Writers (paraphrasing)… Unless, as Dave surely has planned, there is more to it than that ๐ Can’t wait!
It’s kind of similar to Pohl here. https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie803/ , as mentioned above what really strikes me is that both of them allude to harmful effects but have avoided to be specific.
One possibility is that they do know, and want Selkie to “awaken” and start using her powers. The only question here is that if that is the case… why they don’t just tell Todd, as I don’t think he would be against Selkie learning resonance stuff.
The other possibility is that they really don’t know and just suspect and really just want to investigate.
Yeah, try and bully and threaten your way with the government, it won’t end well. I mean, it really sucks she can’t have her emitter thingy, but none of us even know what it is. Pohl seemed worried about it, Then is also pretty worried, chances are, it’s not actually the best thing for her to have.
Maybe it’s not hurting HER, but people around her? Maybe her mother knew it’d be dangerous for others and just didn’t care as long as it kept Selkie safe? We literally have no idea what this thing does or even what it’s purpose is. I’m inclined to think a doctor and government agent know better than Todd does… and as far as her mother is concerned, we don’t know what her intent was or if it was a lesser of two evils or best of intentions sort of deal or something else entirely
When she made the bow, she looked very sad. I assumed it was because she was leaving her daughter behind… maybe there’s a possibility that it was something else. Maybe it was guilt over giving her something potentially dangerous.
Why can’t there be a middle ground? I personally think taking a video recording of it would be a great way to make sure she keeps that message. She DOES have a cell phone after all. And I can’t staaaand Then. I guess Dave figured the audience needs someone else to be mad at for awhile.
I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this in the comments, but here goes:
I’m going to go ahead and trust Selkie’s mum and believe that Selkie HAS to wear this. It’s for her own good. Something bad will happen if she doesn’t wear, something worse than Selkie e.g. getting constantly tired.
Then I thought about that time when Selkie was “acting up” during Todd’s and Mina’s intimate parent-teacher meeting. I went back to check, and sure enough, that was the one time she wasn’t wearing her bow.
Maybe Selkie has some sort of mental issues that the bow is supposed ot be repressing?
Oh now that is an interesting theory! I hadn’t thought of it being a mood suppressor. Darn that is a super-dangerous thing to hand over to the govt. then. Not sure what you do instead at this point though. Unless he tries to punch Then, I don’t think he’s going to get it back – and punching an agent just doesn’t seem what Todd would do.
I’m not sure why they’re so much against giving it back to Selkie in ANY case, to be honest. They could de-power it and give it back. They could study it and give it back. They could give back a fake, safe copy and none the wiser.
I think the point is that Then doesn’t know *what* it is or what it’s supposed to do, so leaving it in the hands of an 8 year old that has already damaged it once may not be an option. You don’t leave a real loaded gun out where a child can get to itit, but if it ends up just being a plastic nerf one then maybe. You need to be able to tell the difference first though.
Looks like IRL jumped up and byted our Monday update. If what ever attacked the update has got eight teeth, the makes ” it bit me” into “it byted me”, right?
“Sorry, Buddy?” THE HECK!? … yeah no, I don’t trust this guy one bit
I agree. Then seems to have a chip on his shoulder with regard to humans.
I think he’s just insulted that Todd called his offer a bribe.

So, how long is the ribbon, exactly? It was wound around the emitter thing before, and now it seems to long enough to be worn around Selkie’s neck.
It’s magic, clearly.
Maybe it is long enough and strong enough to wrap around Then’s neck…

i absolutely *love* her glare in the next-to-last panel – it totally says ‘yous better not be messing with me or iยดs be BITING your butts!!’
But does she weight the same as a duck?
or a very small rock?
Churches!
Who are you people, who know so much of the ways of science?

Did he just selfishly admit he’s not giving it back cause it’ll stay with his branch? This guy reminds me of Tom in the Sailorsun comic.
4th amendment is STILL a thing.
….seriously? Grow up. Todd is literally trying to protect Selkie from you. He has a reason to be annoyed with you.
You can’t just act like a little jerk and expect people to be fine with it.

I love the fan art! ๐

You’re right! I wonder why they even mention the possibility of a return in case of safety.
I meant why the *don’t* even mention
