Ditto that. Selkie is playing by the rules and having fun, while Amanda is clearly out for blood. I’m worried Amanda will escalate to physical/verbal abuse on Selkie if she doesn’t win, which really reveals Amanda’s background–that kind of response doesn’t come from out of nowhere.
While in Amanda’s case it may be indicative of her abusive background, some kids just don’t deal well with losing. My brother was a board-thrower, stomp and yell and call names when he lost kind of kid. He grew out of it with time and a lot of getting sent to his room.
Man, every so often I forget we lost him, then remember, and I get sad again. His novels were just so much…it’s been a hard year regarding lost creators.
“PRACTICE!” is a very, VERY close second to “Again!”* – two of the best one-liners I’ve seen in ages, appearing in different strips on the same day. π
*Today’s “Dumbing of Age” strip, for those who don’t follow it.
I never read Roomies! but someone linked the relevant strip in DoA the other day, after Willis posted the flavor text a few days back. I’m relieved that (so far) there has been no re-enactment of that. Selkie & DoA are the two comics at the top of my list, btw. π
I was interested to find out he re-drew that No Regrets strip in his current style just for fun, and apparently in about fifteen minutes. That level of speed amazes me. I’m slow and easily distracted; in fifteen minutes I might have the penciling done but I’d never get full pencils outlines flats and shading in fifteen minutes, not even for just one panel.
I’m really glad for Dumbing of Age, honestly. I liked Shortpacked for awhile but by the end it deteriorated, mostly after he openly announced he was putting it on auto-pilot while DoA picked up. Plus the overt soapboxing got tired.
As one may guess from my own works, I prefer ongoing narratives to pop-culture one-liners anyway. π
D’awwww Theo’s expression. I think he’ll end up being one of Andi’s biggest supporter on her journey in motherhood. He’s able to see past things and look further into a person.
I think Amanda took here a step to a more normal behaviour.
Sure she is angry and her vioce is scary BUUUUT she didnt attack Selkie in any way. She is more into competition in the game and not with brute force or verbally.
A big step.
Also for Selkie, she seems to enjoy the game despite Amanda there where she hates so much. Sure she enjoys to outpower her in the game, but hey with the past of them…
And Dave thank you very much for this comic. I love it^^
Erm, “practice!” kinda says this is pretty typical of Amanda’s escalation pattern. Yes, it’s better than outright attacking Selkie, but I’m waiting to see how she takes it if she actually loses before assuming she’s taking a step to the positive. Given the broken gamekid, I’m really not going to be surprised to see this game go flying if she loses. Will be all sorts of interesting watching the adults deal with that if it happens tho.
Yeah but until now she escaleted much more easily. You are right this is not the first time with the VOICE, but in the play before she attacked and got verbally very fast. From this Point i think its better that she can restrain her a little and she doesnt complain , she wants the rulebook to seemingly beat Selkie in the Game and not in another way. But we will see what will happen.
I don’t like many competitive games for a similar reason. If it lasts very long, I get too caught up in optimizing strategy that I lose the playing. When you create what can only be described as a pen-and-paper spreadsheet when playing Clue (or Cluedo, depending on where you live), you’ve lost something.
Not really. We don’t know what she intends to do. Sure, she angry, but to the best of her ability she’s containing it. She most likely wants a rulebook for her own benefit, to better understand what moves she can use to her advantage.
Also, Selkie is giggling at Amanda’s lack of experience and understanding of the game and also the fact that she’s beating her and gets to see her get frustrated. If Amanda getting angry over losing is frowned upon, then passive taunting and giggles should also be, even if it’s far less severe. Besides, if Amanda somehow makes a comeback, I’m sure Selkie won’t be pleased about it.
People underestimate the death voice. You let all warmth, kindness, and humanity out of it, and talk with the cold, emotionless power of a river stone. Usually with teh “Kubrik Stare” and people will do exactly what you want. One of the best damn tools available to a person.
It helps if your tone also drops about 2 octaves and you don’t blink. It just screams “I mean business.” Or “I am off my meds!”
There was a cut sequence where Murray and Ackroyd were playing double roles as street people who keep running into this stuff going on. One of the sequences which wasn’t kept had them walking through the street which was covered in marshmellow goop.
MURRAY: Now, a 10 foot pile of marshmallow is not normal.
ACKROYD: Unless, UNLESS, there’s a 20 foot wide cup of hot chocolate somewhere nearby!
MURRAY: (thinks) Yes, yes, that would explain it.
She can’t even play nice. π Actually makes me wonder if Amanda not getting along with the real kids of the couple that adopted her wasn’t due to her behavior being the problem rather than them being mean to her the way she presented it.
She was their real kid too. And I believe Lillian told Andi that Amanda had been physically abused by her family prior to being returned to the orphanage.
Is Theo giving Andi an “I saw what you did there” look?
“I saw what you did there. And good girl.”
Haha “Practice” Best line just let Amanda win now XD
I hope everyone nips Amanda’s aggression in the bud here. It’s uncalled for as this is just a game.

And then we find out that Todds biological father was Death, and apparently “the voice” skips a generation.
Amanda growled, GET ME A RULEBOOK.
“Dude, where did the scary voice come from,” Andi asked.
PRACTICE, explained Amanda.
RIP, Pterry.

I mean, she’s in good company. (I’m pretty sure Susan showed she could do it if she tried, too, didn’t she? Makes perfect sense.)

I read DoA. I also read Roomies!. I’ve spent the last few days dreading a recreation of “Live with integrity. No regrets!”.

I’m picturing twenty years from now, Mike and Amanda-Marie marry, have a kid, who grows up to become Darth Vader.
D’awwww Theo’s expression. I think he’ll end up being one of Andi’s biggest supporter on her journey in motherhood. He’s able to see past things and look further into a person.
βPracticeβ – Perfect.
Cry RULEBOOK, and let slip the dogs of war!

“Amanda’s angry voice is “Impact”ful.”
Typographic humor!
I’m Aachen to see what comes next!
An Arial bombardment?
War is hel…vetica.
Yup, knew it, Andi letting them duke it out here was a really bad idea.
Also, I was a kid like Amanda — hypercompetitive. Don’t play multiplayer games with me. Or her. It’s just bad.

Oh I soo see a lasso coming on. Also bear trap.
[Scorpion] GET OVER HERE![/Scorpion]
yep, good times ahead!… snerk!… NOT!…
Heh I have a feeling it is going to be lasso to bear trap.
There is no Amanda, only Zuul.
No stay-puff marshmellow man please
He wasn’t so bad, he’s a sailor. We get him laid, he won’t cause anyone problems.

That family was Amanda’s family from infancy. Amanda is what she is because of what they did to her. She became this way, she wasn’t born mean.
She was their real kid too. And I believe Lillian told Andi that Amanda had been physically abused by her family prior to being returned to the orphanage.
