Happy 4th of July to my fellow American readers! Today is a good day for beer and gunpowder. 😀
Probably shouldn't tell the police officer about Giant Death Pony plans.
Happy 4th of July to my fellow American readers! Today is a good day for beer and gunpowder. 😀
Looks like some valuable lessons are being learned all over the place in this arc.
Also, thanks for taking the time to do an update on a holiday, Dave! 🙂 And question, when you have time… since you’ve given Officer Martin a name, does that mean he may figure more in the story at some point in the future?
One never knows… 😉
That confirms it: OFFICER MARTIN IS SELKIE’S FATHER

bullspit my school would have you drug in cuffs if you pulled what this twerp did
Wait. WAIT. What does the officer mean by “We had some other business here”? WHAT OTHER BUSINESS?
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking…
Yeah. Was wondering that too…
Hostile work environment related, or new events happening off-screen?
I would guess that hostile work environment is going to be with the school board, or possibly the teacher’s union, not the police. I don’t have any idea what it IS, but I don’t think it’s that.
It’s been a long while since I’ve read back through the archives, so I may be getting this wrong or forgetting something important, but wasn’t one of the orphan kids who goes to the school dropped off at the orphanage so he had a place to live while the police looked for his missing parents? The police may have some news for them.
Yep, he was the same officer who dropped off Hamud.

yeah was think the same thing
yeah was thinking the same thing
Is it possible that Professor Trunchypoo called the cops on the way to school to deal with the criminal conspiracy to frame his son for things that never happened?
Except that Trunchbull is a fairly educated and intelligent person who would understand what criminal conspiracy means, and wouldn’t call the police until he was sure a crime has been committed.
To be fair though this wasn’t really a fake 911 call.
Yeah, in my state, when one child does something that puts another child in the hospital, the authorities do get involved.
Yeah, but no one went to the hospital on this day. Back during the original incident is when the police could have been involved. But I think Todd had already talked to Agent Brown at that point and probably would not have wanted to involve authorities who didn’t already know about Selkie’s “condition”.
Still according to what the officer has said so far about the call Selkie didn’t lie about what she called in. After all Truck did somewhat beat up her friends.
Same here in the UK.
In my experience it is usually the school administration that calls the police; even when it’s not, everyone involved in an “incident” gets in trouble. Even those who don’t fight back, don’t raise their fists at all, they have to be at the very least suspended.
When the police get involved in a school situation, everyone loses.
It’s not like the old days where kids scrap it out on the school yard and then have detention. Now, if a student is involved in any kind of violent altercation, be it as victim or perpetrator, there is zero tolerance.
Yep…so if one kid is being beaten up, if he so much as holds up his hands in a defensive posture, he is as much to blame, if not more so, than the one beating him up.
That´s why, when police get involve, everyone does NOT lose.
Truck physically assaulted Selkie and put her in hospital – and Principal Hobbit covered it up because he did not want to confront Truck´s father. As Taja says below, physical assault is illegal, and covering up illegal activity is also illegal. “I was scared of Professor Trunchypoo” is not an excuse.
It would be reasonable enough for any kid to want to get police involved this time, so that Truck doesn´t keep getting away with crap like that again and again.
Except the police usually go by what the administration tells them.
No one really wins in school bullying cases. Except the bullies get away with no punishment sometimes.
I beg to disagree with this comic. Physical assault is illegal, no matter how young the offender is. The officer might not haul Truck off to jail right then and there, but the officer should have told Selkie and Todd that they could file a complaint, and he should have made the same offer to the other child and his parents.
Yeah, this is reminding me of this anecdote: http://notalwayslearning.com/for-mature-players-only/34255
Kid A brings collectible trading cards to school. Kid B steals them. Kid A tells teachers, only for teachers to say it’s not their affair and that Kid A needs to deal with this kind of stuff like an adult. Kid A points out that the adult thing to do is to take Kid B to court for grand larceny, and would the adults testify that he confessed to stealing the cards that collectively were worth over $2000?
Cards were mysteriously returned very quickly thereafter.
I know from first hand the information presented is wrong. Not only do the police handle bully situations but they can very well send a child to a juvenile detention camp until they are old enough to be tried as an adult. I’ve watch first hand as a kid was dragged off in handcuffs after beating the shit out of another kid in a middle school. I was a janitor there for 6 months.
I should have said center instead of “camp” it makes it sound all the more worse.
Anyways even when I went to school even threats of violence were taking very seriously and I knew a few kids who were sent out to these centers while they were evaluated.
Tommy’s expression there looks like his heart just started beating again, after the heart-attack last page. 😛
I get that Selkie is eight, and it’s probably just me because I had a pretty awful childhood but even /I/ knew that cops didnt’ deal with bullies and 911 was a serious thing…. and I grew up in group homes and crap.
Just to add to my previous comment…. I mean she grew up in an orphanage. That’s state-funded, and if it isn’t it still has well-trained staff members, who would have probably taught them how serious calling 911 is. Unless it’s just a story arc, that seemed like a pretty dumb move on Selkie’s part… or maybe I just hate kids these days…. but I DO love Selkie!!
That’s right, kids…if you’re being bullied, society will protect the bully.
And at this point he needs the protection. Selkie has won. She has stomped a hole in him, his father knows what he’s been doing. And now Truck should be good and terrified of her considering he now knows what she regards as plan b worthy tactics.
He has lost the faith of the other students so he’ll never have an army on his side again in that school. Truck is beaten and destroyed. He truly does need protection.
Not that he doesn’t deserve it, the mighty has royally fallen hard.
Beer and gunpowder? I’d probably do it the other way round, but if you want to blow yourself up, be my guest. Actually, don’t If you were my guest, you’d be on my property when it happened.
Happy 4/7, USA residents! Oh wait, you do dates the other way round as well.
7/4!
Well Selkie I think you might want to take a look at the Apocalypse Ponies first.
http://youtu.be/FIY41LrvMFQ
My Little Pony,
Apocalypse Ponies,
Punish Mankind For Their Sins
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to think of the Apocalypse Ponies when she said this. 🙂
Like I said on the page before the cops do take this sort of thing seriously.
Truck would have been arrested in the real world if the cop actually knew the laws.
She just shoved video evidence in his face. Is he really that incompetent?
Wtf.
In my backwards, messed up and poor(Poorest county in florida) town arrested three girls for kidnapping(shoving me into a bathroom and keeping me from my bus home)
Children can be sent to Juvenile Hall for assault, if the situation is severe enough. I agree Selkie shouldn’t have called them this time, because she already had her father involved and didn’t give him/the video a chance to work. However, if the school administration had failed her again, and her father wasn’t able to address it, then it would have been appropriate to call for help if she or a friend was attacked again.
Um, this is kind of wrong on so many levels. If a police is called they investigate. They don’t brush off a kid calling an emergency hotline and not double check why. Police DO get involved with bullying if called on. There have been so many incidents and school shootings and all kind of crap that the police cannot afford to ignore something like this. Even if they think it’s nothing they still investigate because if something happens to the child later down the line and they are shown to ignore a previous cry for help that will cost jobs and stain the polices reputation.
Giant Death Pony, hm? I approve of Giant Death Ponies.
This is a thought that has never really occurred to me, but shouldn’t Truck’s father have warned him to leave Selkie alone? I’m not saying in the terms that he believed that he had harmed Selkie but because he knows of what she is and what she is capable of. I’d hate to see anyone start a witch hunt against a child but he seemed a bit defensive in that phone call when he said that she was trying to poison him. If his precious son is so important to him he’d just tell him to leave her be right?
I don’t envy the cops in a situation like this. If they act, they’re criticized, if they don’t they’re criticized. On the other hand, that job scared wimp of a principal needs to be fired for letting this bullying go on, but he won’t be, you can bet on that.
The problem with that is that the principal is well aware that the last person who tried to stop the bullying DID in fact get fired! He was also in a “damned if you do / damned if you don’t” situation.
Sadly there are schools that do have real police and more students get arrested and charged with crimes of normal school happenings. It isn’t a good trend at all. It is a deadly one to liberty.
Other business? Hamud’s parents? I already read this but I don’t remember. ..
