Man she reminds me so much of me when I was her age. I so wanted a chemistry kit. Never got one, but I wanted a chemistry kit to commit crimes against nature with.
lol i dare you to do an image search for that more than 24 hours after posting that comment and i bet you’ll atleast find 10 fan arts based solely on this comment.
I LOVE this webcomic and I love Selkie! However, I have to admit that I’m a wee bit bothered by the negative portrait of Prof. Trumbull. YES, there are TOTALLY close-minded people working in academia. I am a college professor myself and I cannot stand behind all the college-level teaching strategies in the US. However, at my school, I respect my colleagues and I believe we are all dedicated to helping people build their critical thinking skills and develop the “habits of mind” that lead to critical exxamination and thinking.
I would LOVE to have Selkie as a student and hope we see more positive representaitons of academia! 🙂
Dave gave the Prof. the name “Trunchbull” so we WOULD have a negative reaction to him. Dave is a storyteller and sometimes in stories the name given to character has a history attached to it that is suppose to colour our impressions of that character even before we know anything else about them.
Thinking of the Prof. as the bad guy is a precondition of this story, just go with it.
Ahh just think of Trunchy as an obstructive bureaucrat, just of the academic type. He’s really a blind jerk and putting in Todd’s way as an opponent. This could have happened with anyone from any occupation. Sure, most professors may not be like this, but that’s why Trunchbull is the bad guy here. He’s so in love with the concept of his son’s innocence that he refuses to accept any truth. There’s a lot of parents like that.
Really, he’s smart enough to know a little, and stupid enough to think he knows it all.
Indeed, while Trunchbull’s character flaw is exacerbated by his education, the education is not the cause. Indeed, he should know better then to presume because he is educated, but his pride turns it around so that he uses his education as an excuse for presumptuous behavior. But while there are plenty of Trunchbulls in real life (a few years ago, one of my college professors turned out similarly, though that’s a long story), there are also lots of good college professors.
I wonder just what Todd bought for Selkie? Surely not the “Sue & Kathryn Golem Kit,” ’cause he wasn’t there when she, er, “WANTS.” Though nineteen ninety-nine doesn’t seem an unreasonable price to pay for whatever it is…

I got one, after much begging. It was confiscated soon after when mum found I’d already started one in the laundry…
But, is it a Chemistry Kit?
… I just worked it out, it’s Golem. I first read it as Coloring.
True, it’s a make your own golem kit. But let’s face it, she would be incredibly happy with a chemistry kit.
Fanart makers, a challenge, draw Selkie in a steampunk mad scientist getup like Dr Steel.
Selkie, fleeing won’t help. There are cameras everywhere these days.
I predict a mobile phone for her.
Instead of Sue & Kathryn, maybe she should invest in a sai & katana for her next encounter with Truck.
“Ninja Selkie”… now there’s a thought.

Not a chance! With my luck I’d prove “rule 34” true. *cringe*
I used to do that as a child… hell, i still do that now
“I should flee.” Selkie, you will grow up someday, but don’t you ever change. Best reaction ever!
This is a one-hundred-percent-accurate representation of what happens when I go to the Lego store.
So, my husband and I are looking to have kids. I’ve started browsing baby and children’s stores for a registry…..and keep buying ~myself~ toys! :p
“I should flee.”
Did anyone else hear Groo in their mind? “I should fray.”

It’s not my intention to discredit academia as a whole with the Professor. My own real life professors were great people who I enjoyed learning under.
Trunchbull is his own person, and I intend nothing for him but that.
Well, there are idiots in all walks of life…

PS: Using my iPad so I am sorry for typos!
