I remember suddenly dying and having unknown sicknesses when i didn’t want to go to school! My mom said something about doctors and big needles and I remember suddenly feeling better.heh
Am I the only one who attempted to pronounce “whatsesevereses” aloud as I read? And if I were Todd, I’d be driving Selkie in myself and having a talk…oh wait, didn’t he ream out the teacher weeks ago?!
I predict that one of two things will happen. Either she’ll go back to school and Truck and the principal will be terrified of her because she has a big scary defender (Agent Brown), or else they’ll try to push her around again and suddenly find out that she has a big scary defender. Either way, I hope Dave shows us what happens, either in flashback or in real time.
Or, my favorite, she’ll come back with a big toothy smile for everyone who has ever bothered her. A nice big toothy smile with eyes of anger and rage. Works every time.
What was that quote again?
“Gentle discouragement of aggression through implications of gruesome carnage.” (https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie415/)
Although fear may not actually work on Truck … Selkie’s banshee wail has been shown to cause fear. Truck was visibly afraid of it (I think), and that fear transmuted into increased anger. Oh dear. *dithers about wringing hands*
I don’t think Truck was /scared/ of it, I think it might have actually been causing him pain.
Humans lose aural sensitivity from the high end down, over time, on average. If Truck is particularly sensitive to start with, it might’ve further impeded his ability to think or reason while he was already aggressive…an incomplete aural stun, if you will, on an already rampaging rhino.
Something like this happens to both myself and my partner with the wrong sounds nearby, and it can be bad enough to put us on the ground if someone turns their music up too loud. One of our cats can also sing at a register that makes it impossible to chain two thoughts together until we can get them to quiet down (no violence involved, the cat reserves that tone for a fairly specific Need and we’ve been able to teach him the word ‘quiet’ with little more than a spritzer and verbal remonstrance).
This does not excuse Truck’s behavior of course, but finding the physical root of a problem is often the first step towards correcting/dealing with it.
Different prediction: Selkie goes back, finds out Truck didn’t get punished, gets called to the office and is told in no uncertain terms that if she acts out again she’s being expelled. Remember, Truck’s parents apparently have a lot of pull around this district–they got their boy’s suspension lifted. Who knows what else they did?
….oh sweetie your sopsot to twitch and try to shiver. If you going to sell on being sick you got to be able to take any threat the parent gives. My parents try the hole “doctors and big shots” and it still didn’t work on me. I knew they could nerve get off work that easy if I keep on being “sick”…….. I was a evil child and I’m a evil woman now……
If I was “sick” I was put to work around the house and in the yard. It didn’t matter if I was legitimately sick or not, although my mom did feel moderately bad about it when she had to take me to the hospital once.

I love the expression variations you’ve had these last two pages!
Todd is truely *dad* material.
If you want to sell being sick to your parent(s), you have to feel it, emotionally.
You also have to resist the temptation to peek to see if they’re buying it… Rookie mistake, there.
W-what happened to Selkie?
And who’s impersonating her in the final frame?

I tried to pronounce it too – I think I got it right once, but couldn’t repeat it. XD
Based on Selkie’s expression in panel 3, I get the impression that her homework hasn’t been a high priority for her lately.
Probably, but I think facing Truck is what’s mostly bothering her.
I’m kinda surprised she’s going back to the *same* school…

I just love Selkie’s face in the 2nd to last panel. Super cute, kind of peaking up out of one eye and her tongue out just a bit. I died.
I’m actually wondering if Todd is aware, yet that Truck was never suspended and that Selkie was the only one actually punished after the incident.
I’d imagine that, were I in his shoes, I’d be tempted to make Selkie’s nickname a reality. (Then again, I’m vindictive that way…)
In any event, I can see an uncomfortable chat in the principal’s future.
