Can’t figure out if this is step-son/dad dynamic or I’m a human step dad and you’re an entirely different species/culture and I’m trying to be the authority you need/expect me to be because …um…. I’m here for you kid? Dynamic.
Guessing it’s some of both. It’s pretty clearly shown that Avery DOES care for Benny, but isn’t sure how to express it.
Add in that Avery knows that Benny and Selkie each have a bunch of trauma in different ways, and he’s trying to keep Selkie from being further traumatized by however poorly Benny might be about to handle this.
It’s pretty clear that Benny has a strong “you’re not my real dad” complex, mixed with a dash of “I’m almost an adult, I don’t need a dad anymore” (i.e., standard teenage rebellion). Avery is probably trying his best, but there’s only so much you can do when your kid is actively fighting you like that. And to be fair, Avery does seem like the rather bossy sort of dad. Have we ever seen him acting like a dad in a capacity other than telling Benny not to do something? Even if he’s not being unreasonable, children that age tend to react badly to “because I said so”.
A couple of things are happening there, but a big one right this second is that Benny’s purposely pushing limits.
He’s trying to get the gossip because his step-dad is a super agent – Avery knows things he’s not sharing. Benny knows he’s not allowed to know things because they’re classified. But if Selkie tells him – its her info, she’s allowed to tell him. So BOOM: loophole over Avery’s secrecy rules.
Hmm. Is Benny actually concerned about Selkie (given the gossip surrounding her heritage) or is he just trying to BS his way into things out of nosiness or something worse?
My take on this is that Benny is just curious for the gossip, and maybe a little callous about the potential effects on Selkie (not unusual for a traumatized teen?).
In Dave’s defense, I don’t think this is supposed to be a “haha” funny sort of punchline. Dave doesn’t usually worry too much about making sure there’s always a punchline.
I think this is a 13yo boy saying something that he thinks is edgy/clever. Which is totally something that a boy in that context would come up with.
Like, if we switch who says it (an adult sarnothi to his teenage human step-son) it becomes immediately aparent how messed up it is, even as a joke-y thought. I know Benny can’t really do this joke “threat”, but I still find it in really poor taste.
Benny has issues.
It is a very drownable face, and it’s very good that that particular boundary gets respected.

i think Benny probably does care about selkie and her situation, but i dont think he has the maturity to realize its worth leaving it alone
I don’t find this kind of joke funny 🙁

Oh, I’m not criticising Dave. I’m criticising Benny.
