Perhaps, but it does seem more like Scar is tolerated in this location than actually liked. I don’t think that either side could resort to more than verbal threats in this situation. Scar says that Todd forgot, but I am not so sure he actually did. I think the only reason Todd is biting a bit with his words here is because he is worried about Selkie. If Scar is hiding the truth, and there is a societal reason why, Todd wants to know before it blows up in someone’s face. He came here knowing that both he and Selkie are ignorant on Sarnothi culture. He came here hoping for answers and/or pitfalls, and he thinks Scar is avoiding one without letting them know. It could blow up even worse if Scar is her dad and other people know and the truth comes out. Better to find out the reason why/truth of the matter and nip it in the bud before it hurts Selkie. Todd does tend to go momma bear mode when it comes to protecting her.
On a side note, I do wonder how much experience Todd has with racism considering he comes from a minority family that he was adopted into. It could very well be that he saw his parents or siblings deal with things that makes him worried about what Selkie will deal with around her own people. He already has to contend with how humans might treat her and knew she was from a clan that almost got completely wiped out (if I remember right). Adding in that she might be mixed clan, and taboo, on top of that probably has him on edge with the implications.
This is a dangerous person, and Selkie is near the centre of a charged cultural and historical nexus. But Todd is at least a capable man, and I think potentially a formidable one.
I should likely remind everyone that Todd grew up in punk rock circles. I have as well. You don’t get through that without having to throw down every now and again. Crazy thought, I think he can hold his own. Even underwater in a scuba suit with a water wizard with lifetime experience.
Think you’re on to something, there. I think Scar’s response is reflexive; most who deal with him are Sarnothi who know or at least suspect who and what he is. Thus, he isn’t used to people who don’t defer to him. But Todd is willing to put his *life* on the line for Selkie and I think Scar respects him for that.
Be nice of Scar just flat out said his claiming of Selkie would mean she would inherit the responsibility of his sins and he doesn’t want that. It’s not right for her to be punished in his place. And that he didn’t lie- Todd is her father.
Yeah, I was shocked at his answer to Todd at first, but you’re right. This makes sense.
He’s basically telling Todd “did you forget I’m a war criminal? Do you want your daughter to be the daughter of a war criminal?”
A lot depends on Scar’s facial expression. If this is a “sad face frowning and looking back on the past” sort of “Whose house you are in, who you are talking to” then it’s Scar being like, “She doesn’t want any of this.” If it’s more of a “narrowed eyes and bared teeth” sort of expression, then Todd probably ought to be ready to throw down, because he certainly isn’t going to be BACKING down.
It’s not clear to me yet if this an admonition or an explanation. Maybe he’s telling Todd to watch his tongue, or maybe he’s reminding Todd about the rest of the story.
why doesn’t he (Scar) just say so, instead of the threatening tone. I swear to all that is holy if people would just stop posturing and say what they mean communication would be so much less confusing and pointy.
“The house of a man who just lied to *my daughter*, undermines her psychological health in doing so, and has poor depth perception to intercept a left hook?”
I’m…not entirely sure what Todd was expecting here. Last time this came up he flat-out told Scar that he couldn’t and wouldn’t acknowledge him as Selkie’s bio father due to his history and also on the off-chance that someone else might be the bio dad. At most, he’d acknowledge him as a ‘friend’ of the family. So I don’t know why he suddenly expected Scar to come clean about things here, after he told the guy himself to essentially back off on that particular subject.
I get that Todd probably doesn’t really get the potential ramifications of Selkie being publicly acknowledged as Scar’s daughter, because no one has talked to him about it. But *they should have*. He and Scar (and maybe Avery too since it could be a security concern) should have had their own private meeting ahead of this one so they could talk things out and try to get on the same page about what to tell Selkie. I’m actually a little frustrated with both dads on this, lol.
(Obviously this route gives us more drama and is more interesting for the narrative, but still.)
Now, in addition to seeing how this conversation plays out, I’m curious to see if Selkie either flat-out admits to Avery that she knows Scar is lying or if she manages to give him the slip and comes back here to spy on the conversation like she does nearly every other time people have a conversation out of her earshot 😛
Could have sworn that Todd all but said word for word that Scar can be an uncle figure but not a father. So I thought Scar was just yielding to what Todd wants for Selkie. Feel if Scar went either way, Todd would still be pissed off. Todd wants honestly without any emotional fallout. Have cake and eat it too. oye,
Ope, Todd doth anger Scar more easily than Scar thought.
Careful Todd, you’re a parent, but you don’t antagonize Waterwizards when you need an oxygen tank to survive in said Waterwizard’s lair.

Is it just me or is Todd simply not afraid?

Yeah, I figured as much.
Scar probably believes he’s doing what’s best for Selkie, that doesn’t mean it *is* the right thing.
“The guy you saw in your house was my twin brother, Racs”

OMG, this
I hate it when people beat around the bush like Scar is doing.
Todd ain’t scared
