I *love* the fact that this webcomic enjoys using other languages here and there. Like not even that there’s word play, which is great, but that multiple characters are skilled in at least basic levels of multiple languages, in stark contrast to so many shows where English is the norm and you might, at most, have “the quirky one” happen to speak another language.
We live in a world full of language and only ever experience a fraction of it, and it’s great to see it explored more widely — along with the communication issues that crop up.
I knew someone who spoke, like, seven languages, and sometimes there’d be moments where she’d pause like her brain was struggling to remember what language she should be speaking. So, if Todd knows at least three languages to any degree, plus trying to learn Selkie’s (Tensei?), it’s not surprising to me that he’d grab the wrong one in his rush to ask the question.
It’s not that he’s reaching for the wrong language. It’s that he’s trying several different languages, in case the person happens to know a bit of one of those even if he doesn’t speak English. It’s a desperate attempt, but better than not trying at all.
Yeap! My husband and I visited Europe, and I wound up using my (not very good) Japanese to bargain at a street fair in Scandinavia, because I speak English, Spanish, and Japanese while the vendor spoke Norwegian, German, and Japanese. Sometimes you just bust out whatever you can and hope you find a match.
Yeah, much as I love Japanese and think their writing systems are beautiful, and much as I’m allergic to Romaji, this is one instance where it’s wholly justified.
Feels like that time I woke up from surgery and tried to thank the nurses and ask for a glass of water by speaking English, French, Spanish and Japanese at the same time.
It’s a testament to Todd’s basic decency that he’s trying to find Plo Quar – given that one very probably consequence if he finds her is that he could lose Selkie. But his first reaction was to try and find her because he knows how important she is to Selkie.
For some reason, I had assumed her mum was long dead or something. In retrospect, I remember people saying she was kinda famous or something, but I don’t remember anyone having any sort of update on her whereabouts. Her being seen “last year” is very promising though.
She’s been tagged as being in the background of a few strip here and there, notably in Milwaukee when Marta told Antoine (spelling?) that she was engaged.
I think Selkie has assumed that her mom was long dead, though. I don’t think SHE has had any information to the contrary.

Just a note – if she is excited/interested, the pupils of her eyes should be HUGE not slits. She would be focused.
