Oh man you guys, I thought this one was gonna be delayed, but I pulled it off! This semester I have night classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, and I was a bit worried about the Thursday updates. Hopefully, you’ll never notice the difference. 😀
Marla B. Sanderson is a former mayor of Calumet City (where the comic takes place) who had a strong presence in the education system.
yay Selkie!
Have to ask though, did her giving him a kiss cut his cheek? Or is Todd allergic to his daughter’s kisses? I know she isn’t wearing lipstick.
Allergic reaction was what I thought of first when seeing that. And I guess he could be allergic to her saliva.
Looks like she just nicked him with her teeth by accident. Probably no worse than a shaving cut.
thank you dave i enjoy this comic immensely it is a wonderful story and i look forward to each update on another note the steering wheel in the car looks more like a yoke form a plane kind of cool if some cars did that
I really highly doubt that, because it would be a safety hazard, I think… Imagine slamming your face into one of those things while decelerating from 75mph to 0mph in 0.2 seconds. It’s going to do a lot worse than the top of a steering wheel.
Venomous child. How does one get around that? Clever how Selkie’s first school day is starting right around the first day of the school year (at least in a lot of the US). 🙂
Over here schools started near the start of August, but I think it’s already been established that Selkie’s time and real-world time don’t go hand in hand.
Schools start the day after labor day here in Oregon.
It started around the 29th here in Reno, NV.
o.o Wow, for an elementary school, that building is HUGE. Must be tons different from the one-floor elementary schools around where I live…
o____o Seriously though, that building is frickin’ HUGE. Is it the only elementary school in that city? (I’m doubtful that it is, but it doesn’t hurt to ask)
O.o And I hope Todd is alright with that mark on his cheek… let’s hope he’s not allergic to her saliva or something.
I’m thinking it’s a big city, which has big schools. Also remember that in the city land is expensive, so they build up rather than (far) sideways.
Well, I’ve always lived in a town my entire life, so I’ve never seen a city school, to be honest… I have no idea what they would look like. For an elementary school, to me that building is just HUGE.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the school. My elementary school was only two stories high. But we did have several trailers as well to use as classroom.. hmmm and I think there was an extension added while I was there. So… maybe if it had all been in one building it would have been three stories but still. I think this building looks particularly huge because of all the windows.
Very true, but I’ve never seen a four-floor elementary school building before. None the less an elementary school that had more than one floor. I’m a town girl. I almost never go into the city…
So, who is Marla B. Sanderson? Google, it does nothing…
She’s fictitious; in universe, she is a former city mayor.
We’re all curious why you mentioned her is I guess why the question was asked. I was curious, too.
Ah, sorry. Basically Marla Sanderson is just a piece of lore/worldbuilding. Plus I wanted the school to have an actual name. XD
naa probably she just cut him witch would be just a cute thing if her kisses just leave a small cut kiss imprint.
-person who see Todd- what happen to you?
-Todd- I got some love from my daughter
“Did you cut yourself shaving?”
“No, parenting…”
I just hope whatever it is doesn’t keep him from showing up after school because he is at the hospital or something. I would hate to see her standing out there waiting until everyone leaves feeling abandoned, but still waiting and hoping.
This could be bad… that’s a sad thing…
Next step: get her a cellphone or something, so that no sit-com-style “missed and cried” plots happen… I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t want to see a sad selkie~
Since Todd is scratching the red mark I would say that it is an allergic reaction. Generally speaking people don’t scratch cuts.
They /could/… If it barely hurts, it would tickle. That merits scratching, yes? And besides, she has such pointy teeth. One of those may have scratched him.
Well, we do know that Selkie is somewhat poisonous, as crook discovered. It wouldn’t be surprizing if her saliva caused a reaction much like Poison Ivy.
Oh, yeah… Aquatic toxins are about the worst, aren’t they? That zombie poison made from blowfish, for instance.
But surely this would’ve been in the file?
Depending on how long she was at the orphanage, and that she didn’t say goodbye to any adults that worked there, she may not have formed any bonds strong enough to desire to show that kind of salivic affection. Nor did they attempt a taste of her blood. If she went to a doctor specifically to find out what/who she was in a dissecting manor, this may have been the case, but a lot of it was blacked out ala military/government censoring, so maybe it was in there and could not be revealed to the public, likely for her own safety. Eh. It’s up to Dave, though.
from the look of the mark i kinda resembles mario from the first mario bros game tilted to the side
I was going to ask what was Todd rubbing off his face, but I suppose this is one of those things you’re going to make us wait for right Dave? :p
OHNO!
:< Please let it just be chicken or tuna.
AH-hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! … was my first reaction when I realized that Todd might be allergic to Selkie’s saliva. Wow, sadistic mood I be in. Aside from that, I find it yet another hurdle of this parent/child relationship. He’s had an easy time of it so far, as in how he handles things. I’m curious how he handles this, whether it be cuts from teeth or allergic reactions to her. I always wondered why he went veg-O. Maybe he became allergic… somehow?
Anyway, I see you changed the color for active/visited links. Awesome! I can see them! Thanks, Dave!
Dear lord people, It’s gum.
An allergic reaction or a toxin in her saliva wouldn’t produce a reaction that quickly unless she had also broken the skin, at least slightly. So I think she has to have at least nicked his cheek. That would not rule out a toxic or allergic reaction (hopefully minor so it doesn’t cause too much trouble).
It could also be just a fragment of left over breakfast.
Let’s not forget simple food allergies. Many of us should remember the biology breakdown that Dave did. I don’t think that there was a mention of intentional toxins/venoms. However, incompatable biochemestry (as Crook discovered) could cause a similar reaction.
Personally, I think its more of a suction mark. My grandson likes to put enough force to rival a vacume. Besides, only Dave knows the truth and he likes to leave us hanging on things like this just to watch us squirm with comments 😛
Can I ask you something Dave. May I use Seilkie?
What do you want to use her for?
future tale where she becomes part of that guy with the glasses.

Oh, cool. Sure. All I ask is you email me a link when it’s done.
quick qeustion: What stuff would Selkie review?
Hmm, like movie reviews or the like? Well, her likes are a bit towards the quirky side. She likes dinosaurs and thinks learning about animal science is interesting. She also kind of likes cutesy kinder-goth stuff, although mostly because she thinks skulls look like her. She likes reading short-to-medium books and some graphic novels, but prefers stories to combat spectacles.Umm… sorry, just not sure how to answer the question sorry. XD Hope that helps a bit.
rethink this with that fact she will be about 29 in the story
Oh, FAR future. XD Well, I haven’t thought extensively about she would be like as an adult, but I think if she were to review movies she would probably enjoy horror and adventure movies, and maybe sci-fi. I think she would like love stories but romantic comedies would be a bit iffy (depends on how cliche the movie is). I don’t see her being into superhero films or animated films as an adult, but she’d watch it if someone else wanted too.
Hope that helps.
OK so she will be a co host take pick:
Welshy (reviews films he likes)
the blockbuster busters ( reviews bad blockbusters)
Phalous (reviews bad horror movies)
Film brain (review bad recent movies)
Spoony (reviews bad fantasy and video game movies and and anything with Reb Brown)
Cinema Snob (exploitation movies)
nostalgic chick (films aimed at or leaning towards girls)
Nash (bad doctor who episodes)
Last Angry Geek (resent doctor who episode)
and mayby
Nostagic Critic( bad 80’s and 90’s kids moives)
I think Blockbuster Busters or the Nostalgia Chick sound fun.
I wonder how Selkie would like the movie WaterWorld or any of the Jaws series.
By the way I love this comic wished the updates were faster?
would if I could, ha ha. I gotta keep time open for classes.
I like your comic…..nice drawing…..
Thank you Nana!
I guess that’s what you get for having a daughter with fangs…
(Also, I saw your recent post about spam trouble. I recommend the extension WP-CaptchaFree— I’ve installed it on a site I run, and it works great with no user input needed.)
Please oh please don’t be the first sign that Selkie is/will become venomous …
… Go Wombats?
….. Is that some sort of advert on the side of the school or something? No really, why does it say “Go Wombats!” on the side of the school building?
It’s a school softball team.
