The dream sequence was fun. I hope everyone enjoyed the silliness, but now we’re back to the real world. 😀
Or are we…. ????
…
We are. I hate False Awakenings. XD
This dream sequence went through a LOT of re-writes over the course of it's run. There was actually going to be a third act after the centaurinas which led in to the Big Fall that I cut entirely. I even had pencils done, but it would have extended the dream sequence right to the middle of SEPTEMBER. I was also going to have Selkie simply wake up due to the fear and the fall, but I had an idea for another option that also allowed for me to use my Giant Crook idea after all. :D
…and we’re back, jubilant and sibilant!
Crook to the rescue? :3
She´s wearing the pajamas… so this isn´t her first night at her new home?
I had looked forward to seeing her wake up in her new home for the first time, and realizing that getting adopted wasn´t just a dream after all…
You strike a good point. Todd put her to bed in her clothes the first time.
Maybe Dave forgot…?
I kind of inadvertently wrote myself out of the “Yay, it wasn’t a dream!” bit. Don’t forget that there was also a shopping trip after the first day that resulted in a pet betta and a some snack goldfish. Plus an afternoon chicken nugget snack where she made amends with Crook.

Aw, they love each other now—though I’m surprised he wants to lick her after what happened when he bit her. 🙂 It’s hilarious when pets insert themselves into dreams. I had a wonderful cat who’d come lay next to me when I was asleep and he’d purr so loudly I’d literally dream of motorboats. 🙂
This is the cat way of saying “Wake up and feed me.” Learned from experience. Unfortunately.
Good point, kitty. Lets get some pizza!
Cats are so weird but awesome on trying to get the foods and attention.
they still scare me that if you die and your with them they will start eating ya….-shivers-
If it makes you feel better, it’s a matter of prudence, not maliciousness. A dog if it’s trapped with you when you die will do the exact same thing. They just won’t do it as soon because of the pack mentality. But any pet if it comes down to starvation or eating it’s dead owner will tuck in.
hahah, only if they’ve nothing left and you begin to smell of food-awesome! Gallows is right. Doesn’t matter the pet. They will resort to cannibalism (even squirrels, mice, and other “herbivorous” sorts which are not ruminants [as in not cows, deer, sheep], or not that I know of… *eerie music plays in the background*). I have seen footage of a hunter (my dad) killing squirrels on their mounds, only to have another come and snack on the carcass. My dad blew that one away, too. And they were in a field and not starving! True story, and creepy to boot. Never trust a squirrel…
Squirrels are nature’s drug dealers
Never heard a cat go ‘Za’ o.o
You should hear my cat; she doesn’t meow, she chirps.
that reminds me of my friends cat. When ever the day would see a bird outside on her deck, the cat would chirp! Also this same cat will roll over like a dog on command.
Yup:) They do that sometimes:) Or I should say some cats are more prone to speek in trills and chirps than others.
what Im doing in the volcano?
what do you think?
its cold outside!
I like how Crook doesn’t really “meow” but instead goes “za”
X3 What a nice way to wake up, with a kitty… I wake up with a kitty every day. But she doesn’t meow or go “za”, she just whines. XD
Just a hunch on my part, but I suspect that Paul was right in saying that it’s a school day for Selkie.
I just noticed that during Selkie’s dream she didn’t have her way of adding s’s to her words.
I just noticed.
Selkie only has eight digits? Each hand has *three* fingers and one thumb?
Yep. Selkie has Cartoon Hands.
Hmm. She can use ordinary crayons to draw… can she use an ordinary pencil to write?
Will she need special typing lessons? Can she tie her own shoes? I mean, yes, people with ectrodactyly and/or syndactyly can and do learn such skills even without benefit of corrective surgery, but Selkie’s hands are… different. (The webbing, for one thing, and the claws…)
Can she crack her knuckles?
Fascinating questions!
Yes she can use a pen/pencil properly. If she keeps her fingers bent the webbing goes slack, and she just rests the pencil against it. She also is able to tie her own shoes, just with a little fumbling.
She won’t be able to do “proper” typing with no little finger to hit the side keys, so she would most likely be a hunt and peck typist, which incidentally is what I do. 😀
As for cracking her knuckles, she can do so if she wishes, she would just not interlock her fingers to do it.
Dangit! I forgot that on my latest fanart! *headsmack*
you know a cat loves you if you wake up with it on your head in the morning
I like how the cat says, “Za?”
Dave> New background colors? I don’t remember all this… pink… before:)
Actually, it’s always been pink backgrounds; however, Internet Explorer (which I am guessing you use) has always shown the site with a white background instead. I was never able to find out how to fix it, but I upgraded to Firefox6 and it started doing the same issue. A Firefox guy told me how to fix it, and it turns out to have fixed the IE issue too. So, now everyone gets the site in all it’s pink glory. 😀
INCEPTION.
Btw, the pink glows on my monitor, like, it freakin’ glows.
Creepy as hell.
:O
Been meaning to ask- selkie’s language. Produced from the larynx, or from deeper in the chest? The snippet
“B-Barrat tae basa’nichei”
suggests very low sounds, which would carry well under water.
Honestly, I don’t know. :O I suppose I should look up mechanisms for making sound underwater.
I had a cat once that when she was a kitten she would climb up on the back of couch when I was sitting on it and reading. She would then proceed to climb up on my shoulder then to my head. She would just make herself at home on my head till I needed to move then she would look at me all indignant like.
Also, my best friend’s cat wakes him up by doing incredibly rude things. He told me once that his cat climbed up on his chest while he was sleeping then extended one single claw and lightly caught his eyelid with it then pulled his eye open and stared at him to wake him up.
The cat didn’t draw blood or anything, it was like he was being extremely careful but just wanted to look him in the eye till he got the message to feed him.
Another time I guess my friend was taking too long to wake up and his cat moved up on the bed and rubbed against his face purring till he mostly woke up, then his cat turned around, lifted his tail, and blew wind right in his face before hopping down and looking smug and self satisfied.
Hate to be the sour pickle, but I actually think this sequence went on for too long (and I’m glad you didn’t make it longer like you originally planned).
Might want to stick to moving the plot forward a little faster.
As a webcomic artist, I’ve run across this feeling in my own work. Like the latest strip I’m working on seems to drag a bit but I couldn’t figure out any way to carry all the stuff in the panels with the dimensions provided without at least one extra strip. Sometimes that’s just the way it is.
My impression from reading multiple full-page webcomics is that they read as dragging on longer in real-time than they do when read from the archives. Even Girl Genius, which has great pacing when read in volumes, feels slow when read in real-time. Personally, I’d rather have a comic that is well-paced when read as complete sequences than have the story compromised for real-time pacing.
On a side note, I think that the cutting of the Crook and Betta page from the desert portion of the dream sequence was correct since that page drew out the story without significantly developing characters or advancing the plot.
You know, for someone who get’s something for free… you really shouldn’t complain. Just saying.
So, you’d rather people not give constructive feedback on how to improve this comic?
You might want to rethink what you’re saying here.
Actually I have nothing against constructive feedback, but your comment seemed more like a personal complaint than constructive feedback. I personally have no problem with how Dave paces this comic. Others might, and others might not have problems with it. But without a lot of people commenting on the pacing it seemed more like a personal opinion to me.
Thank you for jumping to my defense but honestly, I don’t mind the criticisms. If something in the comic isn’t working for people, I’d love to know about it.
Two things to say:
It’s not that I didn’t like the dream sequence, but I was looking forward to coming back to the real world and main storyline.
and
Dave, you’re improving your drawing a lot! 😀
hey dave, the fanart is up!! I emailed it to you!
Got it, thanks!
