So…
How long until Hate turns to Un-Hate…
Oh my lordy…. selkie! Four letter words are NOT appropriate here darling.
yep you need To expand this childs insult capacity and intensity. 6 letter words Shmuck, Doofus, and my new favorite… Wanker, an 8 Letter word Butthead is also acceptable
Able, best, blue, bold, bony, busy, calm, cold, cool, cute, damp, dark, dear, deep, drab, dull, easy, fair, fake, fast, firm, flat, fond, free, full, glum, good, gray, grim, hard, high, huge, icky, idle, kind, last, late, lazy, lean, left, limp, live, lone, long, lost, loud, love, male, mean, meek, mild, mute, near, neat, next, nice, numb, oily, open, oval, pale, past, pest, pink, pity, poor, posh, puny, pure, rare, rash, real, rich, ripe, rosy, rude, safe, same, sane, scar, sick, slim, slow, smug, soft, sore, sour, spite, spry, sure, tall, tame, tart, taut, thin, tidy, tiny, torn, tint, trim, true, twin, ugly, used, vain, vast, warm, warp, wary, wavy, weak, weep, well, wide, wild, wiry, wise, worn… and zany.
One or two of those (like “ugly”) might go on the do-not-use list. Also, I presumed we’re not including Selkie’s extra S’s in our letter counts. ^_-
Is…is that a drinking cup with the poo emoji on it? XD
Asking the important questions here, since I figure we’ll get some sort of explanation for why/how Tehk got on Selkie’s bad side that fast within the next strip or two 😉
I think it’s just because of the drama queen comment he made.
Worse, it has a halo above it. I believe that makes it a Holy $h!+ themed mug.
I WANT ONE!!!
He *DID* call her one of “those” Jin’Sorai.
Although, maybe more stuff happened since we last saw the classroom.
Oh come on, that’s ridiculous, you can’t use hate? That doesn’t make it better, the only time I heard of this tactic used was in Diary of a wimpy kid by Greg’s mom.
Selkie comes from a society that’s been torn apart by an ethnically-based civil war. Hate can be a serious issue.
Selkie comes from a society that’s been torn apart by an inter-ethnic civil war. Hate is a serious issue.
Eh, a few teachers and after-school care staff tried it with me. Didn’t work.
We don’t allow it in our home—except in extreme cases or situations—and usually not so much people. It can actually make negative feelings a lot stronger rather than helping the situation.
This isn’t to say that it can’t apply (ex – I would totally give my kids a pass to use it with heavy duty malicious bullies, people who harm pets, and Nazis), but to use it on someone you hardly know just because they seem negative or rude is over the top and causes complications and doesn’t teach children to learn to be compassionate or even appropriately stand up for themselves. “Master your stories” is a favorite saying here along with our embracing of healthy boundaries.
In order to understand a word, one must be allowed to use it both correctly and incorrectly, and thus be taught the difference.
Too alike to like…
…….. I know Dave is just trying to be a good parent here, but as a kid I HATED being so censored. Then again I talked like a sailor so words like ‘hate’ were kinda low on the totem pole of reasons my mom yelled at me XD
Agreed. Children need to know their emotions are valid, even if they’re misplaced.
Yup. Bad form to teach a kid to “use your words” and then say “not those ones.”
Words are for expressing feelings. Don’t take away that expression.
It’s better to let off steam and then talk the feelings out appropriately when calmer.
One thing my ex and I agreed on was teaching our kid the difference between “grown-up words” and “everybody words.” When he was in elementary school, I told him: It’s okay to use grown-up words if there’s nothing else left that fits your feelings, just remember that you might shock or offend someone. Be prepared for that responsibility. If a teacher gets upset, I’ll back you up.
That worked really well. He only ever used the f-word once, and it was exactly appropriate. He’s 19 now and sure, he swears, but no more than any other reasonable adult.
Tehk reminds me of me at that age, and Selkie’s reaction to his attitude reminds me of most girls’ reaction to me at that age. This comic about magical fish people is too realistic.
Todd just let her feel her emotions. You not liking the word hate won’t change it.
This surely means that Selkie will eventually fall in love with him.
Take some comfort in the Plain White Ts?
Thought that everything was perfect
Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be
Thought you thought that I was worth it
Now I think a little differently
All I wanted was your love, love, love love love love…

When Todd asks “What about the boy?”, my brain goes directly to Tommy…
He saw it all!
Fifth panel Selkie is the perfect Selkie. Yes, she needs help taking it down a notch once in a while, but I love that kid’s passion! She would kick butt in a drama class—especially if it used Shakespeare.
Yeah that’ll do it! Just ride someone over the word, and they’ll stop feeling the feeling! R-right?
There are better words, Selkie! Loathe! Despise! Grab some Shakespeare!
PS: Love the shadowing on her “dawn of time” rant’s panel there.
Bad form, Todd. You might want to be more concerned why she is feeling such antipathy towards him before trying to censor her. Especially given how badly she has been bullied and injured before and no one seemed to listen or care.
Todd is also trying to make Selkie be nice to her bully. Amanda hasn’t actually faced the consequences of her actions. Yet Selkie has to be nice to her.
Yeah, that’s also something that bothers me. I hope it is addressed in story.
I think Selkie’s request for a list is reasonable.
General Insults/Names:
Toad
Yuck
Putz
Plop
Synonyms for Hate:
Loathe. Ok not 4 letters…
Detest
Despise
Abhor
Execrate. But that doesn’t have a satisfying ring to it…
Can’t stand; ok two words, but works well.
Todd, hate is strong, but so is Selkie. Let her express hatred. Choose the appropriate lesson, dude.
Him censoring the word also may lead (crossing fingers) to *why* she dislikes him. Since the beginning Todd has been trying to work with Selkie on reigning in her temper and her strong lingering grudges – hence the dinner with Heather and Barbie and Ken. Selkie isn’t acting as she was with Truck – raw fear, or with Amanda – aggressiveness with fear. This seems more of a low-key reaction for Selkie towards someone (who was just a target of a forced migration and extreme prejudice actions by his government), and showing that the word hate in that type of atmosphere may be not as appropriate. Especially since Todd would realize that all adults involved are going to look to Selkie to help these two (and more?) get adjusted and fit in.
Hey, I just met you, and this is cra-zy; but I do hate you, so drop dead, maybe!
The unbelievable part is where they imply that Rooibos Tea tastes good. Maybe she IS an alien.
