To answer some questions from yesterday: Todd was in the kitchen cooking, and Amanda wasn’t watching TV or playing her handheld because she was feeling grumpy and self-pitying and was having a bit of a wallow.
Tentacle Party Summer Camp is a cartoon, it's probably fine.
awww, he’s sweet.
XD What the trip kind of horror movies are those? Also good that Amanda’s getting quality time. :3
The very best kind, ‘sploitation B-Horror of the 70s and 80s. š
In which Amanda is me.
Umm…..So….Is he sure he got the second one from the right stash? š
Todd addressed that in the transcript “Tentacle Party Summer Camp is a cartoon, it’s probably fine.”
…or maybe not.
Remember Parents, just because an animated show comes from Japan, that doesn’t make it PokĆ©mon.
I mean Heck, Dragon Ball had more nudity then most PG13 rated movies.
~Āæ~
9 year old me noticed. The guys from X men actually had lebidos, though. Jean got around, man.
Wait, he’s been hiding amusing exit lines in the “Transcript” drop-down? I always assumed that would be, you know, A TRANSCRIPT of the comic, for search-engine purposes, and have never clicked it before. >.<
Semi-Secret Director Commentary. :3
It’s set mostly in Arkham.
āŖBut where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns…ā«
…don’t bother, they’re here ā«ā«
GHARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHH *wibble*
This is exactly what Amanda needed. Acknowledgement, vindication, and reparations.
Good job, Todd.
I’m assuming the cheddar nuggets are for both of the kids, wouldn’t make sense for him to make the other kind.
i said it more then once already but its worth saying again: todd clearly is the better parent. juggling the special needs of selkie without making amanda feel left out or second isnĀ“t an easy task, yet he manages. keeping in mind that he isnĀ“t even 30 yet and still rather new to parenting thats pretty much an awesome feat!
Well to be fair, Todd has a pair of awesome examples to learn from and seek advice when needed. Andi’s doing her best (and it’s really not that bad) despite the fact that she doesn’t have a good parent to back her up.
THIS. This is an excellent point.
I agree.
Andi doesn’t just not have a good parent on her side of the lineage to back her up… She has a bad one.
Andi has implied that Patricia considered her a burden… and I’m pretty sure Patricia pressured Andi (I’m guessing that Patricia did not just suggest it, but really LEANED on Andi and played on her insecurities for ‘her own good’) to give Amanda up while Andi was still recovering from labor. This all had to happen inside of 8 hours at most.
I’m hoping that the Elder Smiths will be able to step in and fill the anti-Grandma role that Patricia carved out for herself with something healthier.
Speaking from experience, even 30-somethings with GOOD parents can really screw stuff up, you know.
When your mom says “You did WHAT?” you know you f***ed up.
Todd was also the one that WANTED to be a parent.
Andi wanted to be a parent too, she just didn’t want to adopt. I think that with out Patricia’s influence she and Todd would have kept Amanda.
Those movies remind me of drinking in the bar with my parents; Mom- something with gin, Dad- something with scotch (but not single malt), me- always a Shirley Temple. It made me look and feel grown up, but didn’t actually taste like hard liquor. Plus I got my own Maracchino cherry!
So a horror movie, that threatens to be scary, but in fact is much like The Simpsons ‘Little Treehouse of Horror’ ā- threatens to be scary, but ends up being pretty tame.
Because really, who wants a kid drunk– puking in thebackseat of a car on an hour long drive home?
Or:
Who wants to get out of bed at 2:30am to comfort a kid, who is screaming uncontrollably, terrified from waking out of a nightmare they just had, based on the movie they just saw. Because if you wake me at 2:30 am, I’ll be grumpier than anything you have ever seen at the movies (except Alien, that takes the cake).
I always found horror movies to be funny, even when I was 8. They’re just so campy and unrealistic you have to laugh.
Hundred Acre Murder Woods? Oh d-d-dear!
XD
āThey knew it was only a matter of time before the beast awakened. Their efforts to calm and placate it only fueled its destructive appetite. Now itās too late; This little piggie will go āwee-wee-weeā all the way through their corpses…ā
Hundred Acre Murder Woods: Piglettās Revenge
Itās always the quiet ones you have to watch out for…
Hey…maybe I’m just going crazy, but hitting the back button takes me to Sue and Kathryn…
Personally, I think ‘Demon Clowns from Killsylvania’ is a bit too extreme. Also a bit overrated. There aren’t a lot of good horror flicks with monster tentacles, that’s why ‘Tentacle Party Summer Camp’ is a personal favorite.
“Demon Clowns from Killsylvania” is triple redundant. Normal clowns are creepy enough. A lot of people are creeped out by clowns and there are sound reasons for that: Clown phobias are fueled by the fact that clowns wear makeup and disguises that hide their true identities and feelings. They seem to be happy, but are they really? And theyāre mischievous, which puts people constantly on guard. People interacting with a clown during one of his routines never know if they are about to get a pie in the face or be the victim of some other humiliating prank.
Love Todd’s eyelids in the last panel. He’s not planning on being terrified or even very entertained. It’s kind of resignation…
Why do I think the sound of demon clowns rending people limb from limb will be an aid to Selkie just relaxing and focusing…? Because she grew up in a group home, of course. If there wasn’t the sound of mayhem in the background you needed to turn on suspicious situational awareness.
To – Jaime:
Just catching up, and just read your reply to my last post. THANK YOU! It’s often the “little” things that are actually a huge support for me. Like, affirmation and support from a total stranger, and knowing I’m not –completely– alone in my convictions.
š
I often “lurk”, so I have a favor to ask – if you hear or think of anything, through your connections etc, that may address this need, would you please share? I’m kinda tired of looking in ASD specific forums, as it’s exhausting to continually (at least seemingly) try to make my case. Honestly, I think if I want resources for siblings, I’m gonna have to create some, myself. But, well….. tired, you know? š š
Thanks again!!
Thank you for your kind words!
The next time I talk to my sister, Iāll ask her what resources her in-laws found. I know her husband (who is neurotypical) has sometimes taken a āback seatā to his brother. But, by the same token, I think itās also made him a kinder and more empathetic person – Iāve seen him do an excellent job of ātalking downā my sister when she got really upset about something.
My OTHER sister has a neurotypical toddler and is a member of a lot of āmommy groupsā that she found through social media (like Facebook), some of which have members who have āspecial needsā children (Iām sorry if thatās not the correct term – itās the one Iāve most heard). Iāll ask her for recommendations. She also looks up local parent/child meet-ups.
I canāt *imagine* how exhausted you must be – my sister has a neurotypical daughter (only ONE) and sheās tired ALL THE TIME. It wasnāt until my sister had a child that I really got a personal window into how HARD it is to be a parent. ?
Tentacle party summer camp does not sound apporiate for kids
Oh, it’s just set at a campground where the canoe lake is inhabited by this critter: https://youtu.be/e9Rs7Mn9iKM?t=1m28s Sure, a bunch of kids get dragged screaming underwater and devoured, but other than that it’s good clean fun. š
BONDING
There’s a legitimate movie like that – “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”
It’s mostly funny, but there’s a few REALLY dark scenes in there.
This one gets my references. *finger-guns*
Honestly, I wasn’t sure it was intentional. Thought it might be just from the format of the title, but the fear of clowns is prevalent enough to spawn a LOT of horrors/horror-comedies (“Stitches the Clown” was the most recent I’m aware of, aside from “IT”)
I may be reading too much into things, but “no time like *now*”? The original proverb is “no time like the present” – the “now” make it sounds like “now that Selkie is busy I guess I can make time for you”…
On the other hand, “now” is shorter, taking up less room in a speech balloon than “the present”. And, in context, Todd seems to be in ‘good dad’ mode, realizing from what he just overheard that she does need more, and hey, this is a good opportunity. So yes, it’s possible you may be reading too much into Dave’s word choice here for Todd’s dialogue.
Dammit, now I want cookies.
“WHAT! This movie showed a woman’s bared breast for nearly 7 seconds! Shield our innocent child’s eyes at once!”
“Daaaaad! I’m gonna grow my OWN someday, you know?”
“Not if *I* can help it! Quickly, pop ‘101 Dramatic and Creative Ways to Commit Violent Murders’ into the DVD player! That can’t possibly do her still-developing value system any harm!”
… That above was just a small paragraph of a much larger post about double standards, but every time I try to post the full discussion, I’m taken to a “Page not found” page. I’ve tried 6 times. What the heck is going on here? T_T
AHS in its prime.
