Way back, when Todd and his parents were looking up people in the lake online, they found an article about some fishermen that caught a Sarnothi in their net, strung him up and took pictures of their great catch and then filleted him.
Oops
Pretty sure that was Benny’s dad.
Although it might be like the whole “Scar is Selkie’s father” thing – it might have just been STRONGLY IMPLIED, but never actually flat out stated.
It was flat out stated when Pohl told Todd about the Sarnothi Civil War. It still nauseates me to no end when I think about what happened to Benny’s father. 🙁
Glass – Behn was confirmed to be Benny’s father later on. (From the strip itself, but also the link to the strip about Behn immediately below the strip.) We still don’t know what happened to his sister.
I think Selkie does know how lucky she is and if this goes the way I think it’s gonna go she is gonna show it…. By giving Todd appreciation for being her true father despite not being her biological one.
I still think Benny loves Avery and feels guilty about it, because he also misses his biological dad and feels disloyal. Poor kid. I like Benny because I can see his external sass is masking his vulnerability. I like Avery too because he is trying his best to balance his RESPONSIBILITIES as a spook with his care as a parent and a husband.
I left the specifics of the fate of his sister/Carrie’s daughter ambiguous on purpose (I don’t want to render it on-panel), but I will confirm she’s a war casualty.
Benny is pretty fun to watch when he’s acting like such a teenage boy. Remember when he tried to ask out both of those twins? I wonder if anything ever came of those dance lessons…
Poor kid…. Caught up in his own grief of losing a known and beloved father, while still having his mother.
Selkie’s situation is MUCH different. She lost her MOTHER, who she longs for, and knows she’s still out there. Never knew Scar was her father until now, and he’s only “father”, biologically, from a potentially coerced situation. (Worst case: grape, best case: “well, I’m trapped here, so might as well get sweet with this guy until I can get his guard down”)
Selkie just wants ANSWERS. Not “yay, daddy time, let’s go for ice creams!”. Todd is the only father she knows.
Benny knows Scar is scumbaggy, even calls him “Dime store Darth Vader” of all things… He should be concerned that Selkie might be falling into trouble by him. But he’s too caught-up in his anger.
You forgot his facial markings.
No I didn’t, I remembered them. The entire time. They’ve always been there. It doesn’t smell like gaslight in here.
Ah. I see them now. Obviously I was simply tired, and did not notice them.
Yeah, that’s what happened. 😉
Wait… Benny is the same tribe as Scar. Wait wait wait….OMG!
I seem to remember Benny’s dad being said to have died but don’t quote me on that.

Yes, but was this Benny’s father or a random Sarnoth?

As someone who lost their dad at about the age that Benny is now, this hits hard. I can remember having those exact thoughts. Well done.
Are some shades of luck to parse between having GOOD luck, NOT having BAD luck, and having a fair bit of both good AND bad.
Oh 🙁
Out if curiosity, does anyone know what happened to Benny’s sister? I don’t recall it being mentioned
This is an excellent question. I would also like to know.
Dave?
