Lila: Are you even a real doctor?
Dr. Zoidberg: Well, … Not on your planet.
Lila: Ok. But can you fix him?
Dr. Zoidberg: Of course I can. I’m a Doctor!
Too true. As for me though?
Initial fear: possibly/probably.
Outright attack: Not without a damn good cause.
Seek to understand: Definitely!

In Alan Dean Foster’s Humanx series, the Thranx ended up being almost symbiotic with humans and vice versa, despite the fact that they were essentially giant chitinous bugs. It helped a lot that Thranx smelled extremely pleasant to humans. And were a little *too* sane.
“And WE may very well end up terrifying to THEM, if they arenāt predatory in nature.”
Humans are so often on the weaker end of sentient species in sci-fi, I wonder how it would work out if we made contact with a sentient species that were, like, so diaphanous that we had to whisper around them or else our voices would shred them.
Terrifying, feathered possibly chitinous: kith. Cockroach or bird, YOU decide!! A dozen guns spit fire and lead, and a moment later, he lay dead.
Diaphanous, Fall-apart-emotionally-at-a-raised-voice: stsho. You walk by, and I fall to prices. Oh Oh! oh-oh, oh-oh, you don’t have to stsho, oh, O-o-h-oh, oh.
Alien beyond comprehension: T’Ca, Knnn, Chi. You don’t have to put us down,.. Meh-meh-meh-muh-methane breathers. Just because we get around. Meh-meh-meh-muh-methane breathers.
Fuzzy, Anthro, inquisitive, more-trouble-than-they-are-worth: mahendoāsat. I ‘d buy you a pet, I bet you always wanted a monkey?
Fuzzy, lovable, friendly, dangerous, and brave-defenders-of-Humanity: Hani
If you go down into outer space, You’d better not go alone!
It’s lovely up in space today, But safer to stay at home!

In the Damned series by Alan Dean Foster humanity is the warrior species of the universe- fast, strong, tough, and vicious.
There are species that are stronger, species that are faster, species that are tougher, but none that humanity can’t beat in the other categories.
And none as suited to violence psychologically that weren’t genetically altered by the bad guys.
So humanity gets recruited by the good guys to fight the bad guys, but humanity scares the bejeezus out of the good guys.
The explanation for that being that every other sapient species evolved on worlds with low gravity, low tectonic activity, mild weather, and few predators. Earth is a death world in comparison with dangerous falls, earthquakes, predators, and storms of every flavor.
I recognize flipping as an Adventure Time reference. Since I deeply associate Adventure Time with Regular Show that means whenever someone does something for Adventure Time like a Parody, reference, or cover them in one of their videos I expect them to do something for Regular Show, and by that I mean want and beg them to and hope they will, not think they will, sadly, Adventure Time is vastly more popular.
I didnāt watch the Star Trek episode with the green skinned space babes, but I did read about them on the wiki, so technically that show teaches you to be wary of their mind control not chase after them.
Huh, I always thought āfreakingā was the euphemism for the f word, I never heard āflipping until I watched Adventure Time. Just like I never heard āup in my grillā until that halloween special on Regular Show, and before that I first heard Pendleās version āup in my jamā on Bravest Warriors. But to be fare, I live in Alaska and Iāve never been really social.
that is why i try to stay away from reboots…..however, old kirk was hardly a shrinking violet and saw his fair share of alien beds. it had a sorta ‘james bond’-vibe, you know, heĀ“s sooo hot all the females just throw themselves at him….and i always preferred spock as well. less brawn, more brain (and class!)
Thing to remember: We saw the crew after they’d been together for years and gotten mature as a unit and as individuals.
The reboot movies take us back to the start, before they had a strong, well-developed camaraderie and had grown out of their early adulthood hang-ups. Therefore it should be no surprise that the skills (such as charisma) haven’t been developed.
Same thing with the X-Men reboots: Rogue was taken back to before she got her confidence. And Iceman’s back before he became one of the most powerful mutants in the world. Cyclops before he became a really competent leader who could get along with his team (understanding their strengths and weaknesses, not just in powers but also personalities, and not being so stiff and inflexible that he butts heads with his teammates all the time). That sort of thing.
If we are going by TOS characters I’d say Pohl is closest to Scotty. Mischevious but brilliant.
If we are going with the entire Star Trek canon I’d say he’s most like Phlox. A mischievous alien doctor who loves living among humans.
Dr. Phlox: “It’s unethical to harm a patient. However, I can inflict as much pain as I like.”
I always liked Phlox. Such an interesting character.
Lila: Are you even a real doctor?
Dr. Zoidberg: Well, … Not on your planet.
Lila: Ok. But can you fix him?
Dr. Zoidberg: Of course I can. I’m a Doctor!
those two xD
Now I want to see all the Geeks banding together to protect the Sarnothi. š
To be fair, this is exactly what’d happen if we ever met other intelligent species.
Some would fear and attack them.
Some would seek to understand the new ideas.
Some would want to see how much fun they’ll be in bed.
It’s really just the way of things, how we all seek to understand the world anyway.
Too true. As for me though?
Initial fear: possibly/probably.
Outright attack: Not without a damn good cause.

It also definitely matter WHAT the new species is.
Fuzzy and slow-moving, with 6 or fewer limbs? We’d probably love them, even if they wanted to eat us.
Chitinous or slimy, with no limbs or ‘too many’? Things would be… trickier.
And WE may very well end up terrifying to THEM, if they aren’t predatory in nature.
In Alan Dean Foster’s Humanx series, the Thranx ended up being almost symbiotic with humans and vice versa, despite the fact that they were essentially giant chitinous bugs. It helped a lot that Thranx smelled extremely pleasant to humans. And were a little *too* sane.
THRANXGIVING! When you celebrate the Human/Thranx alliance.

There’s a story u read that had a human kill the galaxy’s most feared predator with his bare hands….good times

Huh… I would have thought Star Wars force powers would have been a closer parallel.
Pohl, Pohl, Pohl…Star Trek was all about RESISTING the charms of green women. š
Gotta watch your tangents again! Todd’s nose hits one line and Pohl’s finger hits another in that last panel. Also Pohl’s hair in the third panel.
Todd’s reaction is awesome, though ^_^

I don’t think “flipping” has anything to do with Adventure Time. Maybe they say it there but I think it’s just a PG-rated swear.
Agree, using substitutes for swear’s has been around FOREVER. Some have even entered the popular language like Heck as opposed to Hell.
Euphemisms for expletives have existed nearly as long as expletives themselves have.
That said, I’m totally on board for some more than others… Ruttin’ and Frakkin’ are two I hear a lot~
“Gadzooks” and “Zounds” were ‘short’ for “God’s Hooks” and “God’s Wounds”- serious blasphemy.
I can’t read or hear “Heck” anymore without thinking of memes like this: https://i.redd.it/o5jsur83emiz.jpg
OMG, Dave, that’s the cutest thing I’ve seen in AGES!! Ahhh, sweetness overload!!
Yeah, “flipping” was the go-to swear for kids who couldn’t use the f-word when I was growing up – well before adventure time.
Same. Flippin’ is an ooooold euphemism.

Okay, here’s a nit I’m gonna pick. I’m just gonna point out that the original Kirk, as written, NEVER chased women. THEY chased HIM.
The current Kirk? Yeah, he’s a lech… It’s my biggest peeve with the rebooted universe…
which frankly has nothing to do with my enjoyment of today’s comic, which was great as always.
Also I’m pretty sure Spock got about as much attention from women as Kirk did.
that is why i try to stay away from reboots…..however, old kirk was hardly a shrinking violet and saw his fair share of alien beds. it had a sorta ‘james bond’-vibe, you know, heĀ“s sooo hot all the females just throw themselves at him….and i always preferred spock as well. less brawn, more brain (and class!)
Mmmm, Spooooock.
But yeah, looking back on TOS Kirk, he could turn on the charm, but he wasn’t… slimy about it. Kelvin Kirk, meh.

Good on Pohl for remembering that Amanda is possibly too clever by half.
Captain Kirk was more in love with the ship then women. Also Spock. He really cared abut Spock. XD
Also good that Pohl thinks Amanda should be told. I agree and hope Todd breaks it to her better than her Mom.
No worries Pohl, I get the feeling Todd knows how to recite “Klingon” love poetry – in Klingon.
Come now. We all know a certain FBI agent who’s already gone the Kirk way.
