For records sake: The last appearance of Hamud and Moonsong (also Wu and Sandy’s last appearance prior to this arc, now that I think of it.) Amanda pranks two kids with one lie. I feel like I am breaking an[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
The First Day of School arc, waaaay back when, underwent some re-writes midway through when the original ending I had intended stopped feeling "just right" to me. A consequence of this that I've regretted since then is a removal of the follow-up to Amanda's duo-prank on Selkie and Hamud. It's not a huge or important thing, but I hated that the incident just dropped off as a result of the rewrites.
(Doing the temporary half-comic thing again folks, sorry to do this twice in a row. Colors and backgrounds will be completed tonight.) I recall awhile back, somereader coined the term “adorifying” for moments where Selkie’s behaviors are equal parts adorable[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
This strip is, I believe, the first time Mina's wardrobe has not been monochromatic.
Sorry about the half-comic. It’s gonna be a “I’ll finish it later” day. Hopefully by the afternoon. Sorry. -EDIT Comic and Director Commentary updated!
I'm playing with giving Tony more head stubble to make it clearer that his bald head is voluntary. He likes the look.
In which educational television is referenced. I posed in front of a mirror for Sandy’s sing-song pose in the second to last panel, while also singing quietly to myself. I am sure I must have appeared a crazy person. Well,[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
I consider it something of a problem that Selkie's bullies have gotten more screen time than her friends at this stage. I think Wu may actually be mad at ME.
So, I’ve ordered a proof copy for a print version of Selkie Volume 1 (or a print version of the e-book if you prefer). I won’t have a street date for the books for awhile though so stay tuned. However,[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
Sandy's heterochromia and freckles make for fun close-ups. And Wu is mad at me because a lot of the Orphanage Crew has kind of slipped into Tertiary Character status over time.
I slip up sometimes on what’s been said in-canon and what’s been mentioned in commentary or ancillary updates, so if you are unsure why Selkie is coughing, it’s not a “drying out” affecting her. Her gills secrete an oxygen-transfering mucus[…]↓ Read the rest of this entry…
The spelling of Selkie's cuss words have been modified to accommodate mucusy gill-speech. "Nezzui Joh'de" translates politely to "Unlucky Poop". Selkie's using it as an exclamation but it's actually a moderate insult. "Kransa bi Cholek" and "Baalu" are much worse and she really shouldn't be saying them at all.
You can’t see them in a lot of detail, but Selkie is indeed wearing her Sue and Kathryn boots. (It’s an old strip but good lord do I still love the Panel 1 expression on Selkie back there. XD)
The action and dialogue in the final two panels was originally something different (that I may reuse later so no telling), but discussions in the previous strip's commentary gave me cause to meditate on how cold dry air would affect Selkie's breathing, which I hadn't considered. So, thanks gang! :D
For those asking about Selkie’s tolerance and methods for cold temperatures, this blizzard’s for you. -EDIT- Slightly tweaked the dialogue to make it more clear that Selkie has heat pads stuffed in her layers.
Selkie's winter weather kit prioritizes insulation and heat retention as much as shielding from the cold temperatures. Insulated thermal underwear, insulated jacket, and special pockets sewn in by Grandma to hold portable heat pads close in. I believe I mentioned this before, but Selkie goes through a LOT of portable heat pads.
