Comic update, line art again, going to need to get caught up. Tree limb was removed, still need to juggle insurance stuff to get the awning repaired. I’m just glad living spaces weren’t impacted.
Going to try to get the last two comics back-colored while also getting back on track-ish with updates. It’s still a bit chaotic where I am, we had 30 minutes of incredibly violent stormfall last Thursday and 20% of the city still has no power as a result. Lots of fallen tree limbs and whole fallen trees still on the sides of roads. It’s nuts.
Also small tentative announcement, as you may know Twitter has decided to limit the amount of posts unverified people can see and ALSO restrict the viewing ability of people not logged in to Twitter. This means (1) I will be losing eyes on my comic posts and you all who use Twitter for updates may miss my posts entirely and (B) the Sidebar plugin I use to let my Twitter posts show on the website for updates, general information, and occasional rants, is apparently no longer usable for those that aren’t on Twitter.
It’s not ready yet, but I am preparing a tumblr page at https://www.tumblr.com/selkiecomic to possibly replace the Twitter feed as a source for update notices, if these Twitter changes aren’t backpedaled. More info on that as it develops.
Take all the time you need and yes, twitter is infuriating right now. Don’t worry about coloring the comic. I remember you told a lot of the story when you couldn’t get a comic panel done, and even if it’s that, that’s fine.
I enjoy Selkie-colored or not, pictures or not, text or not. It is a beautiful story. Go do what you need to do to take care of yourself. 🙂

Dave, don’t forget, you still have the RSS feed (which is what I use to get notified of new comics.) 🙂
I don’t think I’ve ever directly touched the RSS feed. It’s just… baked-in and works, I think?
Yes it does, you just have to point people to it.
For what it’s worth, I use RSS to get comic notifications. If you keep that working, I (and those like me) will never lose track of your comic, and you won’t have to rely on websites you have no control over.
It is surprising to me that Selkie can read the labels. She was five when her mother put her in the orphanage. While I could talk at the age of five – and thus her being able to speak Sarnothi is not strange – I certainly could not read.
I was wondering that myself. Unless the labels are in both Sarnothi and English, due to labeling laws?
I am more surprised due to the fact that she lived on a farm (not in a sarnothi city). It wouldn’t be surprising for kids to remember what boxes of stuff looked like (especially if it was something they liked), vs being able to read it. If sarnothi is a phonetic written language, and necessary to learn in order to work with her powers, she could have learned it in those classes. I wouldn’t expect her spelling or grammar to be 100%, but you can sound things out if the language is phonetic.
That all being said, I was a child who could read pretty well at a young age (maybe due to having an older sibling, or my mom reading to us a lot). I think her learning the letters after the fact and applying it to the words she knows make more sense, in my opinion at least.
I think I was born knowing how to read in English, one of my earliest memories is reading Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, I think I might have been maybe 3. I say maybe because of where we were living when I was reading those books, I could have been the latter half of 2 years old by that point. Anyway it was in Newfoundland, we moved there not long after I turned 2 and we left before I turned 4 in Pensacola.
I found your blog page, but couldn’t locate it on the Tumblr app. You’re going to need a better tag than #webcomic. Maybe #selkiecomics? Or #lovelifefishies?
If I may also make a suggestion, I’ve been reading a lot of various comics on WEBTOON lately, maybe that can be a good platform for you.
I don’t know how or even if I could get 1800+ strips up to Webtoon. Also I think they want mobile-format works, which mine aren’t.
I wonder if they will need to rebrand the bonemeal? apparently “Research has shown that calcium and lead in their ionic forms (Ca2+, Pb2+) have similar atomic structures and so create a potential for accumulation of lead in bones”
sounds rather unsafe.
As long as we don’t have to have a Tumblr account.
But you’re not going to abandon selkiecomic.com, right? It’s just a question of attracting newbies? We should all bump it up at TWC. To which there should be a link on this page! 🙂
I’m keeping the core website. Twitter I used to post update notices and help spread word of mouth. Tumblr would be a replacement for that.
If Tumblr doesn’t work out, for whatever reason, give Pillowfort a look. I joined them during the Tumblr Exodus (which I wasn’t a part of, but which gave me a negative view of Tumblr and a decision to never get an account), and although they’re as yet unpolished they’re a decent easy blog kinda thing (which makes it easy to post pics, too).
See the link in my name URL here for how it looks to post multiple pics (it’s the Logic Puzzles I made for the Person of Interest and Marvel fandoms, for my July Prompt). I also typically use it for hosting the pics I post on AO3, since I don’t do that often and don’t want to juggle having another art-hosting site.
As for updates, I’m gonna suggest other lesser known platforms like Minds. (don’t go after Mastodon its not a viable platform). But when it comes to bonemeal for desserts I’m gonna suggest Sarnothi Jello. Maybe replacing grains in crusts for pies.
I’d look for an alternative to Twitter. That company only ever showed a book profit twice in its existence (2018, 2019) and is bleeding cash. These are last gasp death throes before it finally goes under. It turns out a platform where people scream politics at each other was not a viable business plan.
When I saw the sidebar Twitter feed say you had no posts, I was worried you’d gotten suspended or even banned from Twitter. As far as their new policy, if they want more users, it seems like a really bad idea (I probably wouldn’t join even if they go back to allowing “guest” users to view public tweets like they did a few years ago iirc, since I have very little interest in social media)
The only way it makes sense to me is if Musk thinks restricting the number of posts for unverified accounts will push people to buy verification status. It might work that way for some people, but the changes completely kill what I use the platform for.
From what I have heard, it chases away people more than having them buy accounts. There might be some that want to do it for business purposes (ie journalists, people that look at what is being posted on social media for a job), but for someone that runs an account that wants to post stuff to get interaction with the public, it isn’t viable. If you had unlimited viewing access if you paid for it, maybe, but with limitations still there even when you pay, I don’t see it happening.
Reminds me of twitch trying to force video ads playing over live streams rather than giving bits for ads that people watch on their own time. Having video ads that block the live stream just limits people to watching only a few streams rather than exploring other content, and deters new viewers checking out the platform. You can’t treat a live stream like a prerecorded video that pauses during ads (tv or youtube). Just bad business. Bits for ads was a brilliant idea, since you could convince people to watch ads in their own free time, and they would do it since it would allow them to send a message with bits to their favorite streamer.
In a general sense, I don’t mind unobtrusive ads (banners, etc), but I am really not a fan of ones that have sound, video, or flashes. I am still annoyed that windows solitaire now has ads. You would think that companies would pick up on the fact that consumers want non obtrusive ads, and would do that rather than trying to force people to accept more and more annoying ads. (Not to mention how it can bog down loading a page among other things.)
Oh, I heard about what’s happening with Twitter: There’s a connection to another service that hosts some of the data, and something about the switch from June to July has switched it from a free/already-paid service to a “now you gotta pay through the nose” service. So Elon Musk panicked and tried to reduce the damage by drastically cutting down the service.
Unfortunately, this wound up costing him *more*, because it turns out (from the summary I ran across) that the *way* he tried to curtail it just led to all these other sites with embedded Twitter links to fail to connect, and then just keep trying over and over to connect, leading to a massive Denial of Service Attack 😂
Basically, assuming Twitter even survives this phase, it might be quite a few days/weeks before they get back to being a viable means of connection again.
Tumblr is honestly a good idea. You could dump the backlog 10 pages a post and then just crosspost. Set up all the patreon links etc etc, i think they’d like the story a lot. ( i hope. And i hope you wouldnt accidentally attract the nutcases)
I left Twitter for Counter(dot)Social a year ago and have zero regrets. But I’ve got nothing to promote and as great as CoSo is, and as populous as it may some day be, it isn’t heavily populated now. Tumblr is probably a better outlet for promotion *now.*
But if you’re looking for a decent group of people and want to post your rants, I’d still recommend CoSo for that.
No algorithm, no ads, no trolls, no data mining (the only info it ever gets on you is the email address you sign up with), no disinfo, entirely crowd funded. What the users don’t make up for funding each month the owner pays out of his own pocket. That’s kept the lights on there for seven years.
Regardless, I’m glad you’re migrating to a functional promotion site. Twitter has become … dumpster fire doesn’t even cover it anymore, and there’s a lot of us now who can’t see it at all.
It is disappointing that twitter has gone down the drain for people who used it for things like weather alerts and public safety notices. I know that some of that is posted on Facebook, but I am not a fan of having to have an account there as well (or that job postings and other things have moved there too with their data safety issues).
Y’all have no idea how much I now want to see Te Fahn’s parents start running a cooking class.
On a personal level, they get to meet nice humans, sell their food to them as well, and improve their English, while Todd learns some good dishes to feed Selkie and bonds with more parents.
But on a wider social level; food and cooking have always been a great way to build community.
Who needs Twitter anymore? It’s just full of a bunch of racist, sexist, unethical maniacs.
