I’m not against kids having sips of wine or beer or whatever at home, but Pohl said earlier in the comic that Sarnothi can’t drink alcohol š unclear exactly what happens but best not to let her have anything alcoholic
I think it was Pohl’s college days flashback? I seem to recall it made him hideously sick, more than just hangover sick. And in the orphanage notes they said crackers made her ill too, so anything wheat is probably out in general.
Don’t worry, all Todd has to do is tell her it’s made of plants and she’ll lose interest.
@pingo1387: I don’t really remember Pohl saying that. Do remember at which occassion or in which arc it was? But there is a chance that alcohol is way more poisonous to Sarnothi than it is for humans. Even between humans there can be significant differenences depening on genetics.
But for human children, Seros Senric’s idea is not bad. It could be an option for Amanda.
In my country, drinking (in public) is allowed by law at a much younger age than in the US. Here, a teenager would be allowed to drink in public starting at 14 as long as a parent/guardian is present and allows it. An example would be to have a glass of wine or beer with a meal at a restaurant.
So, that actually varies by state. In my state, for example, kids can drink in public as long as they are within eyesight of their parent or guardian (so, at a restaurant or gathering or something). However, restaurants have the right still to refuse service. Other states restrict that to private residences.
I make this stuff I call “Hooch” and all it is, is sugar water with campaign yeast, once it’s finished I usually stir in a couple of cans of condensed juice.
Would sugar be bad for Selkie? The condensed juice is strictly for taste. I haven’t bothered to try to measure the ABV, but it’s high enough it won’t freeze.
Thereās a few kinds of alcohol made by fermenting animal products. I believe itās possible to make a alcohol from blood.
Also seagull wine is supposedly drank by some Inuit tribes. I say supposedly because no matter how many sources say itās real I canāt believe itās real.
As an adult, even with using tea to adapt to ingesting some plants, Selkie probably couldn’t drink too much alcohol since most of it is made from fruits or grains, but she could probably do fine with plain mead since it’s made from honey and honey is neither a fruit nor a grain.
Perhaps so? But the thing with alcohol is that the sugar is used to feed the yeast to trigger the fermentation process, and depending on how much sugar you add and the type of yeast you use, you can wind up wirh alcohols that aren’t sweet, like dry wine.
I doubt that. Ever hear of blood sugar? Meat is not sugar-free, and if Sarnothi don’t have glucose circulating in their blood vessels, their metabolism must be entirely alien and I can’t see how they’d get the nutrients they require from Earth critters.
I had similar thoughts about most alcohol coming from plant matter. No idea how much the fermentation and filtering might remove allergens. Destilled alcohol might be fine in terms of allergies, but not a good starting point for a beginner.
I guess she has to keep up working on her desensiblization.
white beers probably not a good idea for her but eisenglass distilled should be fine. and Spirits (rather than beer should be fine baring any physiological effects from the alcohol itself) WINE? would i think be very bad. MEAD as well.
After a bit of Google searching regarding meat alcohol (which apparently isn’t practical, despite what a certain book in the video game Skyrim regarding a disturbing wood elf beverage seemingly called Unthrappa might imply), Selkie might be able to drink kumis instead once she’s old enough.
Chances are she’ll hate the taste of beer anyway, so not much harm in letting her try it in a controlled setting.

I told my niece beer is bacteria pee and the bubbles are their decaying corpses. I think I delayed her interest up to 21.

@Baltor it’s page 1123, Pohl is describing how he used alcohol to try to numb the pain of cutting off his hand webs.
Thanks

Is there a meat-based alcohol? Bacon Beer? Beef Tea Tequila? Pork Pernot?
Fermented meat maybe?
Alas! How long before there are vagrant Sarnothi on the streets, sourly clutching their brown-paper bags of salami?
Maybe they will turn out like the Newcomers, from Alien Nation. Get drunk off of sour milk.
Maybe not meat, but it doesn’t have to be grain.

Kumys. Fermented mare’s milk. The Mongols used to get drunk on it.
Kumis is one of those hang overs you dont ever want to feel alpo just bad juju. WAY bad even if its low as shit ABV… SO bad feeling.

Wasn’t it specifically sugar that makes fruits bad for Selkie?

Beer is plants and sugar. You do not want.
I’m 62, and STILL not old enough to drink beer.
Happy Pi Day to those who celebrate it. And to those who don’t what’s wrong with you!? It’s an excuse to have pie without guilt.
I’m a mathematician, but I’m an “e” man!
