"ALSO TELL ME HOW YOU DID IT!"
Tch, Todd, getting mad is always what you do BEFORE you discuss things. Discussing things can just ruin a perfectly good rage.
Is the barette missing in that last panel, or has Amanda removed it and is actually about to eye laser Selkie?
Naw, it’s like the earring a few years ago. Here again, gone again.
And THIS is why I haven’t followed my sister in becoming a teacher – kids are just as capable of arguing as adults with none of the illusion of civility
Sure, Amanda was the first of the two to shoot laser beams, but Selkie’s still building up power, so when she get hers, she’ll most likely be in absolutely full control of them right away.
This kind of reminds me of the start of Girl Genius; Agatha also had a device suppressing her abilities, and despite the frustration it ended up making things a lot smoother for her.
Yeah, gotta say that I’m not really loving this particular storyline so far, certainly not like I’ve enjoyed all the other ones. Selkie is always running into roadblocks or hurdles which, admittedly, she does eventually overcome, while the still far less-likeable Amanda gets the “magic” she sought more-or-less just handed to her.
I’m seeing this as just another dream of Selkie’s crushed. Maybe I’m getting too invested in the stories I like to read combined with some mental fatigue of the times we’re in, but I’d like to see Selkie handed a win for a change.
Okay, spleen vented, carry on.
You’re kinda forgetting amanda doesn’t want this and her very first echo power thing was traumatic. She’s making the best of it she can, but she’s made it abundantly clear she didn’t want any of this. Go back and re-read the archive if you don’t believe me.
I don’t think that this being something Amanda doesn’t want has much of a bearing on whether or not this is a ‘win’ or a ‘lose’ for Selkie. To me, it currently feels like both of the girls are losing. Amanda’s loss is from being stuck with a power that she can’t really control and is painful for her, while Selkie’s loss is from having someone she still sees as a rival not only having the same ‘special power’ that she has, but it’s also obvious that Amanda’s power is much stronger than hers.
The problem I feel is looming in the near future is going to be the likelihood that Amanda’s situation is going to be treated as a priority, so just like Amanda got left on her own to deal with her situation when she was sent back to the orphanage while all the adults had to deal with integrating Selkie, Selkie is going to get left behind while all of the adults who are able to get Amanda’s echo powers under control have to focus on Amanda… which, while not something that’s ethically wrong, it’s still going to be really hard for Selkie to cope with. Since I don’t see Scar being able to be pulled away from his current duties to provide tutelage on this, the only other way I can see this working without Selkie’s training falling behind is if Plo’Quar shows up and starts helping out.
If Selkie would calm down and think, she would see that her sister needs help with a terrible problem instead of a new power. Amanda has no control over the laser eyes – if she takes off her barrette (or it slips off) for a second, there’s another hole in the wall. That’s something even a mad scientist/evil dictator would not want.
Begging your pardon, but perhaps you’d best read the archives yourself. While Amanda may not have wanted laser eyes specifically, she most definitely did want to learn the “echo” power and was mocked for it by that other Sarnothi kid which led them to fighting because, well, Amanda’s temper.
Man. I feel so bad for Selkie. DX This is gotta be real rough.
Dave, please check the spelling of “weird” in the 3rd panel.
That’s another weird exception to the “I before E” rule we learned in school.
Side note: Countdown? Come now, Dave, she’s clearly counting UP :p
I must say – and I do think Todd and the others agree – I’m glad Amanda had learned to control her temper BEFORE she learned to shot LASER from her eyes…
