The mnemonic that finally worked for me was: “I before E, but ‘weird’ is weird.”
It’s funny ‘cuz I have so much more knowledge about the EI/IE combos now than I had when I came up with that thing — EI is not weird, it is situational — but it still sticks around and helps me remember that specific word.
Other words I had trouble with long into adulthood: ‘detective’ (detetive or some similar error — I’d always leave out a letter) and ‘kingdom’ (if not paying attention, I would frequently type it ‘kindgom’).
Teacher: Brian, could you stand up and tell the Class the rule about spelling?
Brian: Uhhhn, OK? Eye,.. Uhn when you need it?
Teacher: Charles could you tell Brian how it goes?
Charles: Eye before Eeee, except after Cee or when sounded as A, as in Neighbor or Weigh, and weekends and holidays, and all throughout May, and you’ll always be wrong no matter what you say.
Brian: That’s,… Thats a hard rule.
Or my personal favorite (possibly paraphrased. I’m reciting this from memory):
English is the result of Norman soldiers trying to hook up with Saxon barmaids, and is about as legitimate as the other results.
Has anyone talked to a Gen Z lately? XD the sarcasm is so strong with them I can’t even talk to them without feeling like they have absorbed my soul and used it for fuel. I love how Amanda and Selkie’s relationship is developing <3 these girls are Sisters and they've already internalized it, even if they don't realize yet. Thank you so much, Dave <3 getting to see this amazing family and read the story is one of a handful of things that keeps me going every day <3
I’m Not getting the impression that Mandy, here, understands how serious this is, or that evn that it really happened. Gonna be some hard words coming down like rain.
You see? What we have heeyah, is a fayyah to Communicate.
Circular saw, power drill, care of rechargeable batteries, belt sander, how to swing a Real hammer (without hitting your own leg), saws-all, saber saw, drywall bit,… Man, you should see my gal with a mitre-saw; ogee crown molding cut for an inside corner,… I giggle and get shivers all over just thinking about it…. woman with a thirty quart Hobart mixer,… how many donuts, fastnachts, paczkis, or hot cross buns could that make? Hurr-hurr-hurr!
The sarcasm is strong with this one…..
“Weird” not “wierd”.
Dammit I keep doing that. >_>
‘I’ before ‘E’, except after ‘C’, or when sounding like ‘A’ as in neighbor and weigh.
Also, weird.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

First rule of English:
Their our know rules.

Might want to cut down on the sarcasm there, little Amanda. You could end up with a sort of “boy who cried wolf” problem.
She’s no more sarcastic than Selkie is lol they’re both little sass machines.

Gen X here, this isn’t a new thing. We started it, but Gen Z perfected it.
This is kind of big, Selkie actually wants Amanda to come. :3
could be she just wants a safe victim ^-^

Girls should grow up knowing how to use a jigsaw and a power drill. Knowing how to use a circular saw would be good too.

Also how to check oil and tire pressure, and change a tire.
