Then doesn't count the colony Sai Fen mentioned in #381 as a fulfillment of "finding us a place to live"

Welcome home.
Now that he’s clarified its mostly the people ‘directly’ dealing with Selkie that need better information, I can see his side a lot better. The information control for the public is a good idea but if they are raising and teaching her they probably need to know a little more about her.
I believe that Mr. Smith does need to be informed. Being a Human and a male of the species, he may not be prepared to deal with an awaked Sarnothi.
“The Jin’Sorai awakened”? Doesn’t sound like he’s talking about Nei Li this time, but it’s unclear whether he’s referring to a *specific* Jin’Sorai or the entire clan.
Perhaps the Sarnoth go into puberty at an earlier age than humans do? If so, Todd is in for a WORLD of terror.
I think he refers to their species´ ability to use that green magic thingy.
Maybe the hair clip was suppressing Nei Li´s awakening in order to prevent incidents that would be hard to explain…
Selkie’s bow contained some sort of tracking beacon that was activated when selkie left it behind. He’s almost certainly talking about that, but exactly what it means that “The Jin’Sorai awakened” is anybodies guess at this point.
I think, as the hairclip was a gift from her mom, it was sending out some sort of distress call to the dormant, hiding Jin’Sorai that are left.
I think Then means them.
NEEDS to be fulfilled? Oh I’m sorry Then. Is this your country? Does humanity owe you something? Cause it seems overall that you’re kind of ungrateful for what our species is trying to do for yours.
Well…one of his species WAS killed and canned by humans. That was the catalyst for the whole Sarnoth Civil war and the Government probably feels guilty about it.
I’m assuming that there was also something like a trade agreement, i.e., Sarnothi glowy powerful technology in exchange for Sarnothi integration into human society. In that case, saying that the promise NEEDS to be fulfilled is just demanding what’s fair.
My reaction to Mr. Then’s demand was initially the same as yours; A foreign agent has no right to dictate what the American people choose. We shouldn’t take crap like that from the KGB, MI6, Massad, or anyone else like that whether they had “green magic” or not.
Yet when I reread the comic, it occurred to me that his tone was more desperate than demanding. As in, “my people REALLY need this.” One can only imagine how many Sarnothi are depending on this program.
Thing is, you people are treating the Sarnothi like the USSR or China or another world power, when really, they’re highly advanced Native Americans. This is sort of America actually learning from its past mistakes and not going for the ‘slaughter the potential threat and take their land’ route, instead trying to integrate this culture that’s got the prior claim on the area with the culture that would normally engulf it through sheer size.
While National harmony is indeed a worthy goal, and a strong diversity of culture is a boon to civilization, there is a huge difference between “Death to Foreigners!” and “Standing up for Yourself”. You can be assertive about your national agenda and/or diplomatically firm without overwhelming or destroying the culture you are dealing with.
I also think you may be underestimating Sarnoth’s strength. The Native Americans were per-industrial and were constantly struggling against their environment. Sarnoth, in this case, has access to technology we can barely understand, let alone counter.
I apologize if I sound like a broken record, (as I have posted this before) but the British Empire managed to rule almost a quarter of the world even though the British themselves only accounted for a tiny fraction of the empire’s territory and population. Technology can (and has) compensated for low numbers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire
Population and territorial size can also compensate for a disadvantage in technology though. As Stalin said, “Quantity has a quality of its own.”
Plus, wasn’t the military race of Sarnothi afraid of conflict with humans?
As much as they are referred too as a different culture and race by law they would still be american as they were BORN in american borders. So yes the government actually dose have to help them as they are from a lake inside american borders and soil.
Touché, kitenkaiba. I hadn’t thought of that.
However, I’m pretty sure that Sarnoth is adamant about remaining independent from American sovereignty , which may or may not void their citizenship.
Would anyone here know if Sarnoth is “Seceded” from America, or is it still technically American territory were we choose not to enforce our laws? I personally haven’t a clue…
Or maybe I’m just waaaaay overthinking this…
There is precedent for that. At one time, American Indian tribes were legally treated as sovereign nations, even though they were within the borders of the USA. That is, the President and Senate could make treaties with the tribes – and could break the treaties and steal their land as winnings of war…
Actually, Native American tribes are still considered sovereign nations. Dependant domestic ones, yes, but still.
but what about the question that Pohl’s wife had about Selkie? she asked if Selkie was “from the Colony… OR straight from Sarnoth?” thus implying there are TWO SEPARATE locales for Sarnothi to be coming FROM… and he of course answered “neither” where are they located in relation to each other, and in relation to the USA? we THINK that we know the location of Sarnoth being in the Great Lakes… but are we SURE of that info? that could be the “colony” that Polh’s wife talked about, with Sarnoth being … elsewhere…
No, we know where Sanroth is. It isn’t … NOT … in Lake Superior (https://selkiecomic.com/comic/selkie399/).
Personally, I think the colony might be in either another lake or in some hidden land-location.
Aah! yes, i remember the question being asked, but i forgot that it was a “SPECIFIC” question vs a generic one… but, by the same token he COULD have been telling the TRUTH… and it was just not BELIEVED by Todd and Selkie… granted, that IS unlikely, but… and we still have only that one reference by his wife of a second place… Hopefully the “Red Envelope of’s Tops-Secretses” will shed SOME light on that subject…
Gee, a trial run in real-world conditions is encountering people who haven’t been told about the trial run… Which, you know, would actually happen in non-trial-run real-world conditions.
Then’s not coming across very sympathetic here. : /
That seems fallacious to me. the real world conditions will eventually be people knowing that they have an alien race amongst them. by keeping that element out of the tests the results will not be representative of the actual real world conditions.
There are still lots of people out there ignorant of many real conditions people might have, and instantly jump to conclusions about them. You only have to look to your average schoolyard bully to find one.
Reveal that there’s an alien race living among humans, and you’ll get tons of idiots who still won’t have any clue who they are.
OR have any urge to find out more about them either… that is, other than what their religious leaders, or even TV tells them “all about” those “evil nasty aliens” amongst us…. again, Then needs to see MIB, and remember that even a slight change of skin color screws with those same peoples mental prowess, let alone thinking about what an ACTUAL real-live “alien” would do to call out the craziness in people…
Hmm hmm, “Resonance pulses.” Coming from Selkie’s abandoned pink bow hair clip? But it sounds more like Then expects Selkie has “awakened” on her own … whatever that means. Is it the green magic? I’m rooting for the green magic.
Who’s on first, what’s on second, I don’t know on third…
Ah, yes, finally! The mysterious hairbow returns! 😀
When, Avery?
Is Then activating his stealth field again? Or does his hair do that by itself?
Is Then activating his stealth field again? Or does his hair do that by itself?
(And yes, I did say this before, server, but no, you didn’t accept it the first time, so how can it be a duplicate post?)
So he’s expecting Selkie to get the green powers – her Resonance – at some point. Expecting the “Awakening.” The way he refers to it makes it seem even more like magic, rather than technology.
I don’t know anything about what the “Green Magic” is supposed to be but I can’t wait to find out. You do make an engaging story, Dave:) I’m trying to do a little more with Shards lately and have something different up this week but decided not to do an offshoot comic like you have your K&S.
Sorry for not commenting very much lately but I greatly appreciate the comments you put on my site:)
I liked that Shards Dust, nice to see Velvy and Humpty making friends. I forget sometimes Humpty’s technically undead. XD
BTW it seems I missed a strip, happy belated Disney trip!
