Dave, I apologize for asking but is that Nate’s mother or father? In other news ooooooooooo Todd’s in trouble.~~~~~ Also even if they kiss they are still people just because the significant other is a teacher doesn’t mean she doesn’t have emotional needs. Lastly I am ADHD thanks for noticing.
Quitting reading a fantasy comic because one character happens to be trans. *Priceless!*
After all the other allusions to sub-culture… bi-racial parents adopting children of assorted races. The black brother is gay. I forget if the sister said she was marrying a man or a woman. Todd’s ex appears to be maybe bisexual? I forget the details on her, but her appearance was a bit… off. Lesbian shoe-sales girl at Walmart. Tattoos, punks…..
You’re going to run across a lot more than that in real life, honey!
“Yeah I probably should expand on that answer a bit. Nathaniel is Nate Jr’s father. He is also a pre-op trans-male.”
This is just one more reason of why I am in fan-love with your comic.
*coughs*
I’ve been reading your comic for a long while now without commenting. I tend to be a quiet lurker in the web comic realms, that is, until I find myself respecting the creator as not only an artist, but an expert story teller.
I’m a bit of a bibliophile, so aspects of plot, narrative, and so on ring quite deeply for me. I have read countless books, comics, and web comics. Many are artsy, some range to just plain odd, but your story out of all the others not only oozes originality, but it does so without being at odds with relatability.
While your plot has mer-peoples of myth and legend, and a secret agent maltese falcon aspect going on with it, it’s all very down to earth. The struggles of being an orphan, a child, bullies, family stress, relationships, day to day mistakes, misunderstandings, and so much more that we oft find ourselves dealing with each day. You take moments that can seem mundane, and breath magik into them that touches our hearts, and can inspire us root for the under dog all the more.
For example; characters.
You have a man with tattoos, a job, and just so happens to have been adopted as a child. He has issues with an ex, and trades snark with his siblings. (swear jar lol) These are elements we see just about every day, and almost as much an any holiday feel good movie. Instead of giving us a family life hallmark card trope of how we’re told people are, you give each character nuances, and details that make them all the more real. They have flaws, personality, make mistakes, and (here’s the kicker) their choices have consequences that, rather than follow the narrative, follow what one would more likely find to happen in real life.
Even though Selkie is of mer heritage, we see her dealing with bullies because she’s different, and yet, (IMO) we see her bullied more for being an orphan in some areas over her different looks, speach, and obvious love of live fishies.
We’re able to grow with her as she traverses school and home life, as well as grow with her father as he struggles with his little girl’s needs. While there are elements of racism, and the obvious aversion by others over her non-human looks, they happen in such a way that all of us can relate to.
Many of the bully tactics or teasing she receives one could find anywhere on the play ground, specially when one thinks of a disabled or special needs child.
We get to see her form bonds with other children as they all learn from their mistakes, and the best part?
Every day heroism. Selkie’s ability to forgive others, and even feel empathy for those that have harmed her. (Truck for instance)
Her Father, instead of stepping back and trying to deal with the issues behind closed doors because of the government shadowing he and his daughter, the man puts on his best shirt and marches in, ready for battle. However,
When in the meeting, he didn’t call out Prof. Trunchbull by name, no, he cut to the chase about the problems with bullying at the school, and then proposed to take the issue to a higher authority. In short, he’s a father of whom dealt with an issue to not get revenge for the ill treatment of his daughter, but started the ball rolling on making the school safe for the other children as well.
There’s so much more I would love to go over as to why your comic is so relatable, touching, shong integrity, and so on, but I don’t want to clutter the page.
It also shows a level of self awareness/world awareness that’s VERY refreshing to see.
Thank you so much for sharing your vision of Selkie with the world. There have been so many gloomy days made brighter because of it.
So he’s threatening Todd for a perceived relationship that he thinks is going on and is going to get the teacher fired because of that? Wow. That’s hideous.
Nah, he’s just doing for Todd, what the Cafe’ owner did for Mina… Reminding them that this is a “delicate” situation to be caught doing something that could be detrimental to their cause…
Still think both of them should mind their own business. If he thinks favorism is taking place then that should be investigated, but as that’s not the case none of this concerns them.
I think the café owner is a relative of Mina, and Nathaniel has an interest in keeping Todd out of trouble as he wants to put an end to the ridiculous handling of bullying at the school. Todd’s indiscretion with Mina could easily sabotage all that.
Nate’s dad seems like a dick. If Ms. Afkhami wanted to make a big deal about things, she would have. Its not the dad’s place to do that. What does he hope to gain from that kind of behavior? Other than some kind of power-induced tinglies from threatening someone else.
At least he pulled Todd into the hallway instead of busting him in front of Selkie, so minor points for that.
He’s not being a jerk. He’s letting him know he noticed, which is a good first move. He’s also letting him know he isn’t assuming that something more is going down.
He is testing to see if there may be more than what he saw, and by giving the hypothesis he did, and judging the reaction, he is basically seeing how deep the situation runs. Most likely the end result here is that he is trying to keep Todd out of hot water, but giving him a little scare, with that ending. He knows it isn’t something that is a problem just yet, but that it could develop into one.
Now, if he turns this into blackmail, then he is being a jerk… or if he does something to reveal this at the worst possible time. However, if he uses his information in other ways, he may merely be taking action to stop a potential problem before it turns into a major issue… especially if Mina happens to be on the good list for the PTA/him with regard to teachers (if they want to keep her, it might just mean he wants Todd to back off a bit and not get her in trouble.)
I’m going to hold off on complaining too much about Nathaniel. He’s making an understandable conclusion based on what he knows. And he’s being decent enough to let Todd know. Let’s find out if he gives Todd a chance to explain and what Todd has to say for himself now…
Though I do have to be disappointed Nathanial went to the worst possible conclusion. Principal Ashton shot himself in the foot without any help from Todd beyond being called out. From what the other parents in the meeting were saying, bullying’s becoming an issue at this school and the guy in charge isn’t doing enough about it. WE know he’s also a bigot, but it’s looking likely that Ashton’d rather go for the easy way of dealing with trouble and the school in general is suffering for it. We’d need to hear from more teachers to know how deep the trouble may go, but Mina and, IIRC, the new gym coach aren’t fans of Ashton’s leadership style. And Mina’s issues with him go back to before Todd was a consideration for her actions.
I’d have to say that that WASN’T the worst place he could go. he’s going for the most “believable” excuse that Todd could give, IF anyone asks… Todd got Smeagol to screw up, in public, with no effort or shenanigans on his part, and was extremely happy in this outcome, and like Nathaniel said, he “gave a smootch” to the nearest cute woman, who was NOT expecting it and therefore bitched him out for it… which IS TECHNICALLY what happened, but it is contrary to what we THINK we know about what was going thru both their minds (ie, we’re not the author)… NOW, if Nate’s dad/mom were to have said something like “OH, so Selkie’s a straight-A Student, huh… and you just *happened* to be Talking to her teacher about it… close enough that you got LIPSTICK on YOUR lips… hmmm… yeah, NOT!… I’ll have to inform the rest of the PTA board of this conflict of interest due to your relationship with M. Afkhami, and that will damage your case against Smeagol if not get it thrown right out the window… blah, blah, blah…
He could as well have interpreted it as deliberate harassment instead of a stupidity out of happiness. Which would be even worse if he tell’s anyone without checking with Miss Afkhami first.
Ok I’m from Australia so maybe it’s all kinds of different in America but it’s not against the rules to date a parent. Or for a teacher to have her own kids in her class. If there is a suspicion of special treatment there there is a investigation process. I went to a school where one teacher has her three girls in the school and 2 of them were in her class and my home room teacher in high school marred a classmates mother so I’m kind of wondering what the issue is here.
It’s not illegal here either, but the problem of perception of favoritism comes up, favoritism and gossip and rumors. Honestly I’m not sure where Nate is going with this…first he asks about favoritism but also notes how angry the teacher looks over being kissed…
Like I said there is a process of inquiry if someone is concerned and if someone starts a smear campaign outside of that process you can sue them for defamation since it affects a person income
My thoughts exactly (by the way, UK citizen here). I’m familiar with the (position of power) issues if a teacher dates a student or a boss dates a subordinate, but it’s amusing to see this treated as a delicate, dangerous, scandalous situation by almost everyone concerned (when it doesn’t feel like anything of the sort to me).
At my rather small grade school, one of the main teachers’ daughter was in the same class as me and no one really thought anything of it, and at least three other parents taught now and then; at my admittedly tiny high school probably a third of the faculty was the parent of one of the students.
However, that’s not typical for the US. I think more typically schools—particularly larger, public ones like the one Selkie goes to—tend to tread very lightly around that kind of thing, and likewise for parent-teacher relationships.
I’m not familiar enough with mainstream education to say whether the reactions portrayed in this comic are 100% relistic, but they don’t strike me as particularly unusual, at least.
It can be more of a School District policy thing than a law thing, or in a lot of areas a public image thing. Sometimes the only thing you need to make your life miserable is for people to THINK you did something they disapprove of. Actual guilt may not even be a factor.
Bingo. To quote the line from Law & Order (can’t remember which ADA said it, Stone or McCoy): “even the appearance of impropriety can be damning enough”.
Not 100% certain I got that quote right, but pretty sure I covered the gist of it. 😀
The issue is that of favoritism. Others might percieve that Selkie/Todd are getting special treatment because Todd and Mina are lovey-dovey.
Also, it appears that Mina may be a member of a faith that frowns on such courtship in general (my assumptions based mostly on her attire– the headscarf). It’s already been said that she has a child, who lives elsewhere with the father. That may have been what the coffeeshop fellow was getting at, probably knowing more about her faith, and less about who the guy was she was with.
I maintain that he’ll be treated as a gossip and a liar and no one will believe him if he tells. Besides, seriously, favoritism over B’s? Naaaaaaah. If she were getting straight A’s, there might be half a leg to stand on. Maybe.
Also, in the comic showing Todd’s lip, it was a *speck* of lipstick. Barely there. Todd shouldn’t have looked so guilty; he could easily have denied it. But even now, since no one else noticed… “Really, did any of *you* guys see lipstick on my face? Wouldn’t it have been obvious?” will do the job just fine if Mr. Bowlcut mentions this.
Also, “grab the nearest pretty thing and smooch her” doesn’t work with his argument because if she were so mad and Todd were just being crassly impulsive (the dude implied she didn’t really know Todd. “Nearest pretty thing” means Todd would’ve done it to basically anyone.), there wouldn’t be favoritism because the teacher would’ve had no reason to prefer Todd’s kid.
The dude’s argument is bullshit and no one will believe it.
He had several theories about what was going on between Todd and and Mina
He abandoned the relationship/favoritism-theory in panel 3, and went on with the ‘grabbing the next pretty thing’-theory after that.
That’s absolute bull, is what i’d say if I was Todd. For starters none of that is ANY of this guy/girl’s business and secondly, a b, b+ average for an 8-10 year old isn’t actually that bad. Nor is it perfect. If she was getting straight A’s it’d be more suspicious.
Considering that Todd ‘grabbing the nearest pretty ‘thing’ and smooching her’ is sexual assault, I can imagine I’d be damn pissed if I heard about it. And, while it should be treated as separate from his daughter’s bullying case, people have a tendency to not keep things apart as they maybe should.
Noooot a fan of how Nathaniel basically went straight to blackmail. While it’s frowned upon for a student’s parent and a teacher to have a relationship, it’s not impossible. I do concede that Todd has made a looot of questionable decisions, but they look like they’ll only affect him and his personal life for the foreseeable future.
Hm… ok, I can see what you’re going for. From my perspective, though, it looks like the hair underneath the bowl cut is actually relatively long, when I imagine you were trying to go for a “bowl cut on top, and buzzed short/almost shaved in the back” look. Am I right?
Dave, I apologize for asking but is that Nate’s mother or father? In other news ooooooooooo Todd’s in trouble.~~~~~ Also even if they kiss they are still people just because the significant other is a teacher doesn’t mean she doesn’t have emotional needs. Lastly I am ADHD thanks for noticing.
He’s Nate’s father.
I’ve been noticing the shape of the man’s chest for these past few strips, kinda wondering the same.
As for his last line, the correct response is, “Tell WHOEVER you want, WHATEVER you want”, and then punch him in the mouth.
Yeah I probably should expand on that answer a bit. Nathaniel is Nate Jr’s father. He is also a pre-op trans-male.
Does that mean that he is in a relationship with Nate Jr’s biological Mom or that he is Nate Jr.’s biological Mom himself?
He is Nate’s biological parent. The other parent is not in the picture.
I am so done with this comic.
K.
You won’t be missed =D
Basta, don’t let the door hit…
No. As Selie would say “screws THAT”. You know what?
Please DO let the the door hit you where the good Lord split you on the way out. As Ayana said, you will NOT be missed.
c’ya
What’s your problem… jerk

I have so much respect for you good sir.
Wow what a glowing write-up! Thank you so much. 😀
I think I’ll just save myself a whole LOT of typing and say “yeah, what SurrealInfection said”, because they nailed it. 😀
I can’t top that write-up, but I am so glad you clearly put in conscious effort to make this fantasy world more inclusive.
So she’s actually a mother with a lot of internalized misogyny, then :(. That’s a pretty tragic character you’ve written into this story.
Google “transgender”. You might learn something new.
Dave! Dude! That is so cool! Thanks for seeing our whole community! :^) I haven’t posted before, but I just wanted to say, thank you!
*Hugs* Awesome. 🙂
And this kids is one of the many reasons why YOU ASK FIRST!!!

Will you tell he grabbed the nearest pretty thing and smooched her? Who cares?
Oh, I’m sure there’s LOTS of people at the PTA who’ll care. This will completely discredit him.
Can’t say I’m surprised with this comic.
What an aggressive, petty person.
And this is where Todd realizes just how badly he’s screwed everything up.
Man I hope somedya we live in a world where NOT kissing someone is what you get busted for.
Noooot a fan of how Nathaniel basically went straight to blackmail. While it’s frowned upon for a student’s parent and a teacher to have a relationship, it’s not impossible. Sigh.
What on earth is Nathaniel wearing on his head? Is that a toupee or a hat?
It’s a questionably-stylish bowl haircut.
Hm… ok, I can see what you’re going for. From my perspective, though, it looks like the hair underneath the bowl cut is actually relatively long, when I imagine you were trying to go for a “bowl cut on top, and buzzed short/almost shaved in the back” look. Am I right?
Kind of like this guy? http://haircutsformen.org/buzz/graphics/termgraphics/bowl.jpg
“Nearest pretty thing”?
EW.
From this guy’s point of view this is probably a lighter crime than conspiring against the principal, but
EWWWWWWWWWWWWW
