Sitting quietly is very very naughty, little miss.
There is a small chance I am getting bored with the straight-square panel format. Small chance. Snowball's chance in Coldharbour.
Sitting quietly is very very naughty, little miss.
This reminds me of a line from a character in a completely different comic. “Let’s be clear here, this ain’t passive agression. This here is pointedly calm, civil, deliberate, non-violent active agression.”
Good job, Selkie.
Manly guys doing manly things?
Indeed it is.
That was one of my favorite arcs!
Seriously, Principal Hobbit, you should have seen this coming.
I forget – is Selkie 6 or 8?
Eight.
Eight.
Actually, has it been mentioned when her birthday is?
Do her kind even celebrate birthdays? If so, is it calculated differently?
Is it calculated from when the egg is laid or when it’s hatched?
Her birthday was shown on these citizenship forms.

Nothing has yet been said how that date was determined in the strip itself as I haven’t found a place to mention it yet. As for sarnothi birthday traditions, they celebrate the day of hatching not laying.
Like how we celebrate birth, not the bouncy-bouncy conception day, right?
I am suddenly VERY worried that this will end badly for Selkie…possibly Todd too. I’ve was”that kid” through out nearly my entire school career and always seemed to feel like nothing was being done about it.
The worst incident was on the bus in eighth grade. There were only a few school days left until I was done with middle school and after the summer I would be going to a different high school to have a fresh start. I had told one of the vice principals about something that had been done to me the day before, but I did not know the student’s name so after school she got on the bus with me and made me point out who it was in front of everyone there. Surprise Surprise, either that student or her friend (I can’t remember if the original transgressor was pulled off the bus or not) attacked me shortly after we left school and beat me up.
I didn’t fight back because I knew that if I had, I would also be in trouble for fighting. I don’t remember if the bus driver stopped it or even radioed it in…but I do remember that once it was over he asked if I was okay. Luckily my bus stop was the first one on the way home, so I didn’t have to suffer too long.
Fast forward to the next morning when one of my parents brings me in to report the whole thing. The same Vice Principal sat across from me and told whoever brought me in that I was suspended from the bus for the remainder of the school year for saying the word that rhymes with witch while I got the tar beaten out of me. She claimed that I provoked my attacker by calling her a bitch even though I: 1)Was already being beaten up and 2)The whole thing would not have happened if she hadn’t outed me as a “tattle tail” in front of the whole bus. My mom ended up emailing the principal, superintendent and a few others about the whole thing and the Vice Principal was gone come that fall.
Not only that, but we pressed charges against the girl who beat me up and ended up settling the whole thing out of court since she had a bit of a record.
So Dave, I truly hope that Selkie comes out of this alright.
But…she’s the heroine! It CAN’T end badly for her! 🙂
In this day and age it doesn’t matter if you are right, the victim, or the hero when it comes to the bureaucracy. If you are out of the lines they draw, you are the problem.
To be fair, it is very hard to draw the right lines with everyone bickering about funds and practicality and funds and who gets elected to oversee and how much they get to oversee oh and did I mention they talk about funds?
I’m not being much fairer than you.
I still want to see a visit from someone named Agent Smith. The fear of God should already be in the Trunchbulls by their connection to this. It’s time for them to disappear. This is all said in the context of running a conspiracy.
AH!… but WHY did Mr. Trunchiepoo LEAVE the agency in the first place? it certainly seems to have been a hostile parting to say the least. as it is right now, they know he knows about the Sarnothi, but he’s, as yet, unwilling to violate the NDA he undoubtedly had to sign when he left. Agent Smith showing up on his doorstep could be the final straw to make him spill the beans, something the government doesn’t want to have happen… who knows what kind of deadman switch he has for the info he “could” disclose… you know, the standard “if you kill me this info will get mailed to all the newspapers” kind of thing…
Except Trunchbunch said that his said told him Selkie spit venom at him; at which point, the only ones who knew were Selkie’s family and Trunchbunch; which suggests, to me at least, that he told his family, which means he did possibly break the NDA.
Which also means Todd was kinda dense to not call Agent Brown about it, cause I think a lot of this would be avoided in that case….or it would be made worse. Not sure, but I could be remembering things wrong as well.
“Which also means Todd was kinda dense to not call Agent Brown about it, cause I think a lot of this would be avoided in that case…”
While Todd knew about Agent Brown, he didn’t have any means of contacting the agent until *after* Selkie got sick. Before that, “Agent Brown” was a name belonging to a vaguely ominous government agent who’d never been seen on-screen and even the caretakers at the orphanage didn’t know why Agent Brown was involved to begin with.
That, too, didn’t come out into the open until after Selkie fell ill. If not for that, it might have gone unresolved for a very long time – possibly forever.
He encounters Agent Brown at the hospital (Selkie367 start). His phone conversation with Trunchbunch was after that (Selkie430 start). He would of had time to contact Agent Brown after the call ended, and after giving Selkie, whatever it was he gave her. While Agent Brown wouldn’t have been able to do anything initially, he would have been aware there was a possible breach of information, which would definitely hurt Trunchbunch’s public image.
All the love for Selkie!! <3<3<3
I wish I'd had anything close to that level of self awareness.
Ahahaha, Selkie if I didn’t love you already, that response to your principal would have done it. Great strip Dave.
Ah, the classical conundrum: If the kid is misbehaving by ‘punishing’ themselves, exactly how can you punish them for their misbehavior? 😛 🙂
I wish I had thought of something this devious when I was that age …
(Not that I had proof of an ogrespawn’s trickery, but in principle.)
Well, I, for one, hope you have it out of your system, and will now return to the “straight-square panel format”.
I don’t know…I’m kind of liking it right now. Maybe after he does it about fifty times or something I might start to want the old frame back, but not yet. Besides, it actually worked better at the bottom of Wednesday’s strip to have the several little shards instead of two or three squares.
Actually, I guess it wasn’t Wednesday’s that I meant. I don’t know what I thought I remembered, but that wasn’t it.
Hee! I only just noticed Amanda’s tongue sticking over the boarder. Nice touch!
Also I do like the variety.
They’re rather eloquent for eight year olds
I’m liking the groovy panels. Groovy but still readable. Also, I like Amanda’s tongue hovering just above one of the panel lines 😛
Be careful Selkie, if you push the Hobbit too far he may push you out of his office and you will not get the chance to show him what you’ve got on Tommy.
He knows he already set this situation in motion by punishing Selkie and not having the guts to stand up to the Trunchbulls. Really, what is he going to do: reward her with another week of suspension for sitting quietly?
Regardless, Selkie has the trump card here, even if the recording didn’t work, Truck has been too blatant, he has no kid-allies, there have been too many witnesses, and no one wants to put up with his crap anymore. Even if this specific plan somehow goes south at this point, Selkie now has a whole school-full of kids willing and able to help her get far worse vengeance on all the Trunchbulls if they dare threaten their beloved teachers.
Or Todd is going to lever the recording with his status as PTA head as has been foreshadowed.
And if all else fails, I think Youtube was around at the time of this storyline. Just need someone willing and able to trick Truck into bragging about everything again and then upload it. This was the whole point of Freedom of the Press.
Sorry if this is spoilers for what’s going to happen. 😉
Maybe Selkie should run back to class with scissors…
I absolutely adore Selkie. She’s one of my favorite characters ever (and I have read A LOT of comics/webcomics/books/etc). Your art is looking great by the way. I love the versatility of body types in your comic.
Ha! I always loved messing with authority figures like that as a kid. If I ever got put in “time out” for a portion of recess, I would voluntarily remain in “time out” for the remainder of recess just to mess with the teachers. And I would be smiling the whole time.
I’ve certainly toned it down as I got older, but I recall many a time in high school that I got out of wandering the halls without a hall pass by claiming that I was called down to the principal’s office. I believe that trick worked every time, although I sometimes had to walk into the principal’s office to shake off any skeptical scouts.
