Lillian is some kind of shoe ninja, I dunno where she got those so fast. >_>
Just a friendly heads up, come by on Saturday for a bonus Sketch Day update. 😀
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
I think Selkie is gonna hafta’ get used to the fact that she has a father now. A father that wants to smother her in love. Also it will be hard for Selkie because of her being rejected so much in the orphanage. In short, Todd might find it hard to love Selkie cause she is not sure what it is to be loved. The talking is over.
… How long have you been adding those captions that appear when you hover over the comic? I always curse myself when I realize I’m five billion pages into a comic, and the artist has been doing it the whole time.
I know he’s bending over, but it looks like Selkie went through her growth spurt in half a second. Now those shoes are REALLY going to hurt.
Also, her eyes remind me of Calvin’s parents from Calvin and Hobbes, in every Christmas comic. It’s funny how as we grow up, we stop wanting to get up at 6 a.m. to see what presents we got. Even after I found out Santa wasn’t real, I kept getting up early for a few more years. Then I hit my teenage years, and now it’s my mum who has to give ME more time to sleep. I guess from middle school up, the best Christmas gift is holiday vacation, and the extra sleep that accompanies it.
The Secret Director Commentary is new. I just started doing it with this and the strip before it. ^^
Thank you for that catch- it most likely would have taken me a while to notice it.
Hey, I dunno if you noticed, but Selke’s arm dissapears behind Todd’s head on the last panel.
And, btw, its called alt-text,Fu.
But, yeah, Ilike the ‘Secret Director Commentary’
I just realized… Selkie apparently has blue blood. Either that or it’s just your drawing style. If it is blue blood than Todd is going to have an interesting surprise the first time Selkie gets a scrape.
Hen he panics and hurriedly calls the orphanage, Selkie could say “I could have tolds you thats.”
You’re correct, but I’m curious what caused you to catch that? I didn’t draw any blood I don’t think…
Of course she has blue blood, she’s a little princess. All royalty has blue blood.
Her having blue blood could help explain her violet skin- it would have to indigo based on the webbing between her toes and fingers or be some color that could contribute to murky indigo, because webbing skin is thin. I nominate blue because the places where she has more flesh, such as her arm, are less blue than the webbing and the inside of her mouth. 🙂 sorry bout wall o’ text
Also SHOE NINJA ATTAAAACK! The shoe ninja is here for you SHOES wait no soul wait no shoe. Shoe. That last one! I bet it’s that last one.
I think one of the laws of this comic is that nobody quite notices that Selkie is not human.
I actually caught the blood thing because of the lining of the mouth. I’m going to school for medical assisting and it just jumped out at me that she has blue mucous membranes.
Good eye! 😀
Bizarre thought: If people with red blood bang their arm and it turns black and blue, does this mean when Selkie bangs her arm it will turn black and red? 😛
Wow, those shoes look wicked uncomfortable…
I’ve been waiting for him to just pick her up! If the shoes hurt and the sidewalk is hot, just carry her!
(also I do not like that it makes me to math if I want to comment!)
fffdfsdfeghdsbhs.comI’m sorry about the math spam protection, I’m trying to cut down on the spam comments the comic has been getting. I hate seeing an inbox full of comments like, “This great subject for blogging, thank you. Cheap pharmacy medication at http://www.fffdfsdfeghdsbhs.com“.
Okay. Well I guess I’ll have to suck it up and just keep doing the math. This is a pretty amazing comic and it makes me feel happy when it updates!
Lol her face is so grumpy! Cuuuute!
!Awww!! Selkie doesn’t know dads have ninja kid carrying skills. Does Todd lift weights? If he doesn’t he’ll be in for a heck of a surprise in about five minutes. Kids are heavy!
And those are the ugliest shoes I’ve ever seen–and I worked at a shoe store’s online call center. Well, maybe the second ugliest; there’s no styalized neon zombies on them. PS, I can’t spell today. Sorry.
I bet Selkie would weigh more than a normal kid too. I’m guessing she’d be less boyant that a human so she could sink under the water and kinda float at different depths by controlling some kind of swim bladder to control her boyancy.
And Dave, I’m begging you to do a double post after she gets home where we can actually read the important parts in her file. Like her special needs and all the good stuff. I’m sure everyone here would love you for it.
That is seriously adorable! Heh, my dad did that when I was little :).
Iiiiii…think I’m going to have to go with “Eeee! The teeth are adorable!” again 😀 😀 😀
I love your facial expressions!
Piggyback rides, anyone? 😀
Also, I like clever image captchas, like ones that show a STOP sign, and ask “what color is this sign?” — captcha bots will enter “STOP” because they will read those letters, but any moron knows a stop sign is red, even if they’re colorblind. Other clever near-bot-proof questions might be along the lines of “What is Selkie’s name?” (again, any moron can answer that, but most bots will be confused).
Email me if you’d like me to brainstorm up a captcha system like that 😀
Thanks, but I dunno how to implement a custom captcha like that if it isn’t a WordPress plug-in. ._.
aww, Selkie’s facial expression in the last panel is just adorable! I love the idea of Todd carrying her, but like Danzier mentioned, I really hope Todd is strong. Kids are really heavy…especially when you have a bag to carry as well. 🙂
Hey Dave, im just curious…where did u get the inspiration for Selkie? i was looking up on wikipedia that creatures like selkie derived from old norse, icelandic, and scottish legends about these seals tha could shed their skin to become human and they are calld Selchs or selk(ie)s which is the old english word for “seal”
Selkie is inspired by a lot of things. The legendary selkie a bit, also mer-folk and sirens. Some of the “unusual kid gets adopted” premise was inspired by one of my favorite Futurama episodes, and there is a little H.P. Lovecraft in the inspiration mix too.
Oh Ry’leh?
Todd makes me happy.
Words cannot express how happy this comic makes me. Thanks dude.
I LOVE THIS STORY LINE!!! 😀
oh, I love her so much :3
Just wanted to let you know that this is one of my ‘must checks’ before I begin writing in the mornings. I know you only update twice a week, but I check anyway. A girl can dream, right? I love the comic, and I love the storyline so far. You are doing an amazing job, and I thought you should know.
Thank you so much. ^^
Apologies accepted for the shoe color. I understand most people don’t like that shade of pink, but as I LOVE me some salmon (even if it’s pricey as all get out) it’s one of the few shades I actually like.
