Glad to see Agent Brown being the voice of reason and recognizing that nothing productive can happen at this time. Poor Todd. Poor Selkie. Poor Agent Brown. Poor kid who got his hand eaten by Pants.
Poor Pants! First the meat was just out of reach, then it’s head was stuck and it hurt! Then it got free of the cage and grabbed a fresh bite of prey-meat, and was even able to hunt again! Freedom! Then it saw a huge land-dwelling prey, but the head was too hard! Do all land-dwelling prey have hard shells on their heads?!? Then some prey hit it in the face! Then some other prey grabbed it by the neck and shoved it back in the cage before it even knew what was happening!
Now Pants is stuck in the cage again and can’t hunt anymore! And no matter how much it yells “I am pants!” like the prey did, the prey doesn’t usually let their guard down at all! None of this is how predator-prey relationships are supposed to work!
i agree, odds are that now her powers are stirring, thereĀ“s no way to turn them off again – unless you want her to wear that suppressor again, which may have drastic side-effects for her health.
still, they can give todd a few days to get used to it, and recover from him+selkie nearly becoming pants-food
Until she learns how to control the Echo it really might be best if she were to stay with Pohl’s family or with the underwater settlement.
It’s hard enough to pass Selkie off as a human child with a “condition.” It will be impossible if her eyes spontaneously start glowing green all the time.
Someone previously dropped the handy suggestion that Pohl write a doctor’s note indicating Selkie has a photosensitivity issue and must wear shades in class for the time being.
Yeah, id disagree with that, but you are totally correct. And worse, the instant you give a kid Super Powers, they are going to try them out the moment (by moment I mean the very Instant) they are alone. Which means yu cannot leave them alone for a moment, and by moment I mean: not alone for one full second ever! 24/7/365/ until you can get them trained. Not even to *cough* wash your hands *cough*.
Agent Brown is right. It’s probably better if everyone (especially Todd) gets time to recover and absorb this new information before deciding on anything.
I think it’s going to take Selkie doing something harmful to someone before Todd realizes she needs to control this. Like she injures Amanda (although that would be such a drastic step backward for those two and for Todd and Andi as well…) and Todd realizes that Selkie is a danger to others if she just has these erratic, unpredictable abilities.
Although if she hurts someone like Tommy that’s potentially even worse, because his parents would be all over getting Selkie expelled and Todd would have no viable way to fight that.
That being said I hope they teach her that she isn’t an all powerful goddess without restriction, she doesn’t need hrr.ego inflated. They need to teach her she can’t hurt people without good reason, such as defending herself or others. Her powers aren’t there for her to mess with people or for revenge, that will just alienate her from others. I imagine Georgie is either going to think it’s insanely cool or be insanely jealous.
It seems to me you think Todd is trying to avoid this. I read it as more he is overwhelmed. So much has happened in a short time and the implications of it all have yet to settle.
Things are going so fast he feels he has no control and his job is to look after Selkie, even though there is no way he could have been prepared for this.
Todd has always seemed the sort to want to know about a problem instead of ignoring it. Give him time and I think he will be ready… to take it slow.
I just realized something from reading the discussion here.
There is a thing called “Flags” basically something seen repeatedly in media where if X is said or Y happens, we expect Z next.
That is where Dave is great. He takes a lot of careful though to give the characters reality in an unreal situation.
Drama isn’t added for the sake of it or a plot (not without reason) but the reactions are genuine instead of played up for entertainment.
Those are called “tropes” (patterns in media that set up expectations for what follows, and can be subverted to break expectations).
Let me introduce you to a fabulous black-hole-time-sink of a website called TV Tropes, a massive collection of every trope we can possibly catalog and all the many ways they show up in media of all types (and, unlike Wikipedia, we have no standard for “notability” with regards to examples: all media qualifies!).
I’m not anywhere near as active as I used to be, but I’m a long-time Troper, and I designed the original pattern for the TV Tropes logo (the lampshade on the second t), even though the design has mutated a fair amount since I first uploaded my suggestion.
I think that was mean, that you didn’t tell Haukness that it’s like an Alien Abduction, with missing time, that at least two days of time will suddenly go missing the instant the page finishes loading. I missed one day of work the night I found that site. It is not to be used lightly. And there’s no probe.
Familiar with TV tropes and the concept of a trope. But I specifically meant flags in this part, and I guess I wasn’t clear with my overall point.
Basically even though we are seeing things that would be a trope or a flag and can predict what would happen, it usually doesn’t. What happens is what most people’s normal real life reaction would be.
Hagrid comes up to Harry… You’re a wizard… lets going on a journey, yay!
A large, disheveled man comes up to you, You’re a wizard… ummm, that’s nice… here have a dollar and get yourself something warm to eat.
And now, the war between the loving parent and the government of two nations to decide what’s right for a child. Sounds like the Elion Gonzales case of the online comic world. Interesting to ponder how an online comic can be so interesting. Without going back to look to see if it was explained, (I forget), how did Selkie’s mom die/disappear etc. Was it the war between tribes?
Far as I can tell, she is living on dry land, possibly in Chicgo, possibly incognito. When the two gangs met up at the aquarium, she was noted in the character tags as being present. She did not have a speaking role in that drama. I blame her agent.
Just think what TV would be like if Dave was writing scripts for them!
(Just think what TV would be like if Dave was writing scripts for them!)
“Okay, Jennifer we need you to get in makeup, then you’re going to do a walk-by cameo while we film Theresa and Julian’s scene. Then we’re going to need you at Lot B tomorrow for some flashback shots, and after that we don’t need you until Season Seven, so you can take a break until 2025.”
I actually, several years back, wrote up some quick scripts for a set of joke comics about the behind-the-scenes of “shooting” Selkie. From what I remember of it:
– The guy playing Todd is a massive narcissist and infamously difficult to work with.
– Selkie is portrayed by two twins who rotate between shooting and the makeup chair, one is a snot and the other is quiet and bookish. Snot does the scenes where Selkie is full of gusto, and Bookworm does the hurt/sad/serious scenes.
– Lillian, Andi, and Plo Quar are all played by the same woman. She’s pretty chill, but stand-offish and kind of a loner.
– Amanda’s actress is very soft-spoken and spends her downtime in a corner playing mobile games.
– Mina’s actress demands three times the lead actor’s salaries and gets away with it because she’s “involved” with someone at the studio. The “abrupt kiss” Todd gave her was not scripted, his actor did that to throw her off and embarrass her, and the director kept it in the final cut to spite her.
– Jessie is her actor basically playing herself, there’s minimal difference between the two’s personalities.
The guy who does the resonance digital effects previously worked for a studio that was involved in three major box-office bombs in a row and closed down. He is still a little bitter that all of the films he worked on have “great visual effects, but terrible writing”. He doesn’t hate working on the show, but definitely sees this as a “between films” thing.
The guy who constructs and operates the giant eel animatronics is an eccentric similar to Jim Henson, but better with electronics. Until the Selkie gig, he had been stuck making characters for childrens’ preschool shows for thirty years. He loves working on the show, but is disappointed by the producers’ lack of ambition in creature and set design. If he had his way, the Sarnoth colony would be full of creatures that would be like if Lovecraft did creature designs for the Dark Crystal.
The lady who does the makeup for the Sarnothi characters previously worked on one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. Like the eel-gineer, she is mildly disappointed that she doesn’t get to do more over-the-top gore effects, but still likes working on the show.
The show has been through a dozen safety officers in this season alone. Although there have been no serious accidents on set so far, the possibility of accidents with all the underwater stunts in this story arc is making OSHA very cranky.
Oooh, here’s another one: the voice actor for Pants is also the voice actor for Han Shin Gian Tho, The Bringer of Dawn, and a very famous completely unrelated video game character. Many of the hardcore fans consider this to be a hilarious inside joke.
Scar is played by a famous professional wrestler, but most people don’t recognize him under the makeup unless they’re told first. Scar’s actor and the makeup lady are very pleased by this, as it’s what they intended.
The Scar action figures are very hard to find right now and scalpers are currently getting away with selling Scar toys for $300+ on Ebay. You can find Pohl toys in bargain bins all over the country, except for the limited edition “Bunny Ears Pohl” which is even harder to find than Scar.
The Han Shin Gian Tho puppet fits over your whole arm and has a hole in the mouth so it can swallow the other action figures whole.
If I were re-doing this page, I’d move him back at least half a centimeter — enough to show that those two elements (his nose and the Agent’s pants) are not meant to be interacting.
I’m glad Agent Brown said something. He’s the closest to Todd… Being a human who is trying to raise a Sarnoth. Yes there are lots of differences, but at least Brown can see where Todd is coming from in ways the others might not
Glad to see Agent Brown being the voice of reason and recognizing that nothing productive can happen at this time. Poor Todd. Poor Selkie. Poor Agent Brown. Poor kid who got his hand eaten by Pants.
Poor parent of the kid who’s hand was nommed on by Pants. Was it implied that he wanted to rile the eels for dramatic effect? But still, PPpantssssss!
Poor Pants! First the meat was just out of reach, then it’s head was stuck and it hurt! Then it got free of the cage and grabbed a fresh bite of prey-meat, and was even able to hunt again! Freedom! So, appetizer tartar. Awful lot of pain to get only a snack for all that work, and end up in the cage again. *sigh*
The best for whom, Pohl? For Selkie, for your people or the clan elder who ordered you to “fix” Selkie?
Probably Selkie, cause the training will at least teach her to turn off the green eye glow.
i agree, odds are that now her powers are stirring, thereĀ“s no way to turn them off again – unless you want her to wear that suppressor again, which may have drastic side-effects for her health.

Oh no, Agent Brown has been replaced by The Bringer of Dawn!
Until she learns how to control the Echo it really might be best if she were to stay with Pohl’s family or with the underwater settlement.
It’s hard enough to pass Selkie off as a human child with a “condition.” It will be impossible if her eyes spontaneously start glowing green all the time.
If that’s a problem then they should give her the bow back. She doesn’t need to be an echo.
Someone previously dropped the handy suggestion that Pohl write a doctor’s note indicating Selkie has a photosensitivity issue and must wear shades in class for the time being.

Hijinks ensue.

Typo: Should be “Let’s”.

To start you off, here is a trope already in play: Power Nullifier

Don’t do it! Days, weeks, months, years will be lost to that website!

Sounds like Gregori from the C’est La Feet, shoe store. Lol!
I’ll contribute a few ideas:

@ Dave, Geneseepaws & MadTinkerer: I WOULD WATCH THIS SHOW!!! (And any “Making of” Special!) Please, someone; make this happen!
Hopefully this gets resolved easily. DX Well sorta easily
Dave, Scar’s face being that close to the Agent’s leg is making my brain think of tangents again: http://emptyeasel.com/2008/11/18/avoiding-tangents-9-visual-blunders-every-artist-should-watch-out-for/
If I were re-doing this page, I’d move him back at least half a centimeter — enough to show that those two elements (his nose and the Agent’s pants) are not meant to be interacting.
