Amanda really needs to learn to chill and be less of a dick about… just everything, really. Mostly for her own good though as her reaction is quite amusing to watch.
I don’t see her being a dick, just competitive. I originally thought you were referring to the text in the first panel but that’s actually Todd on the phone.
Yeah, she’s being dickish, but it’s a tolerable kind of dickish, at least. She’s still behaving herself about as well as can be expected. For Amanda, this is good behavior.
So if I played WoW, Halo, Destiny Left4Dead, Final Fantasy and Zelda but I still enjoy casual games while I’m watching TV, does that mean I can still be a “real” gamer? Or does playing any casual game immediately disqualify me?
Or how about instead of judging others who enjoy different things, we don’t, and let people just like what they like so long as they aren’t hurting other people?
I care because I think its a dickish attitude to publicly declare what makes someone a real gamer. Because there is a whole mess of cultural problems in gaming from the harrasment of gamergate to hostility towards people who enjoy different types of games, especially from so-called “hard core” gamers towards “casual” gamers.
It’s not about “caring” about what you think, its about calling out bad behavior towards others and promoting a change in how people treat each other.
Its totally ok to not like any particular game or category of games (or any other thing). It’s not ok to harrass, belittle and demean those who like things you don’t or don’t like things you do.
I think gamergaters are ridiculous and harrasment is never okay. That’s separate from thinking of some games as casual. I also disagree with some people’s definition of art.
Would you also feel equally offended if I said I think band “x” is not really metal?
Mikael, the minute you said Amanda “wins” because Selkie is (by your assertion) a casual gamer, you made a judgment call of casual gamers being less worthy than serious gamers. Which means YOU’RE the one who brought in negatives about casual gamers.
I can recognize distinct demographics and such, but there’s a difference between trying to categorize things, and trying to RANK things. “That’s not real art!” or “You don’t play REAL games!” or the like are toxic attitudes that have made some corners of society quite unreasonable.
It also makes certain game genres quite insular and reduces their ability to adapt, improve, and embrace a wider audience. I am not saying that all games (or even all high-budget games) need to have wide audiences, but whole sections of the game industry have so narrowed their focus — practically with blinders on — that they cater so heavily to the puerile young-male crowd that they end up with a Catch-22:
A. Women won’t buy our games because they are so male-focused.
B. We need not take any steps (as an industry) to be inclusive of women’s desires, because women don’t buy our games.
And then these same groups turn around and decree female-demographic games (such as Hidden Object or casual games) as “not REAL games.” It’d be hilarious if it weren’t so tragically emblematic of systemic social issues in the gaming world right now.
The women I know want to play the same kind of games as men, they’d just like there to be less sexist stuff in them. Like gamer girls still want to crush zombies or aliens or whatever, they’d just prefer if they could do that playing as a female wearing more than a bikini top.
If Amanda really wants to win, she should get A Wonderful Life then use the seed combined to build up the absurd orchard exploit. I covered my entire farm with those trees and my character died a multi millionaire just selling hand picked fruit.
If you want the newest harvest moons you actually need to look for Story of Seasons, or Story of Seasons : Trio of Towns (which is only out in US so far). These are the actual sequels to harvest moon made by Marvelous, only they lost the rights to the name “harvest moon” so they have to call them “story of seasons” now.
There’s also cheap knockofs being made by Natsune, the guys who used to only do the localization, and have the right to the name only, starting with Harvest Moon The Lost Valley and then Skytree village. These are all kind of bad though.
Good to see them gaming in relative peace. Frankly, one game I’m fond of is Dr Mario. Been playing it on my 3DS.

I’d clasify turning everything into a competition as being dickish – this has already been shown as one of her her main flaws imo.
Yeah, she’s being dickish, but it’s a tolerable kind of dickish, at least. She’s still behaving herself about as well as can be expected. For Amanda, this is good behavior.
Actually, I thought it was Andi. I have no idea then WHAT conversation about a get-together Todd and… Andi?… are talking about?
I think is Tod is speking with Avery.
In the last few comics Carrie was talking to Avery about getting together with the Smiths.
Also given last comics references, I’m now convinced Amanda took some inspiration from Severa/Serena. They are even both canonically redheads. 😀
i love how even though theyve nearly always lived together its only now that theyre really living together
When did Amanda move in with Todd? Last I heard she lived with Andi. This looks more like “visiting Dad (and putting up with Sis)”.
I think Koith is making a distinction between “co-habitating and antagonizing” like they did in the orphanage, and… whatever they’re doing now.
Welcome to Ol’ Miss McDonald “s farm. Where the apples are bounced off yer skull if ya look at Miss McDonald funny.
Assuming that’s suppose to be Story of Seasons which Amanda is playing? While Selkie seems to be a… casual mobile gamer.
Huh, Amanda actually wins this one. 😀
Could be a take on Bust a Move. If it is, then Selkie isn’t casual in the least
That would indeed earn her some retro-coolnes points if so.
I was thinking Animal Crossing, myself…
I thought the same. Those look like cat ears in the first panel.
It’ll probably be easier to tell when there’s colour, though.
Has Stardew Valley been released for the DS yet?
No and as far as I know not going to. It is or will be avaliable on the switch though.
Because casual gamers are “real gamers” right?

Why do you care whether I recognize your or someone elses gamer creed?
Casual gamers are a thing, like my mom who only plays candy crush on her tablet – that’s not an insult.
Personally I think games like that suck but whatever, play what you want, you should not need my approval to enjoy something.

Hey, none of you are real gamers unless you can get to the kill screen of Tempest or Pacman. Oh wait, I’ve never done that. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! 😀

Is Selkie missing her left foot in the last panel.
Either Dave fixed it or it was behind the DS the whole time.
If Amanda really wants to win, she should get A Wonderful Life then use the seed combined to build up the absurd orchard exploit. I covered my entire farm with those trees and my character died a multi millionaire just selling hand picked fruit.
Are we talking a Harvest Moon title and I missed that?
Wonder if she’d like Stardew Valley.
It’s an old one, gamecube I think?

My prediction:
Amanda goes with to visit Avery’s family.
Amanda is totally freaked out that there are “more fish people” besides Selkie.
Ben catches feelings for Amanda. Because video games.
I am pretty sure Amanda is smart enough to know that, if Selkie isn’t human, she musta come from somewhere.
I think Amanda already knows that. After all, she met the De’Madeias.
A phone on the wall? What is this, 1985?
We have one of those. Hasn’t worked in years. I probably ought to take it down, or wallpaper over it, or… …something.
Popping bubbles. This is what it’s come to.
Well at least it doesn’t have cute girls in it, right? That’d be just corrupting!
Unless it’s HuniePop.
