Nope, that’s not Andi. Not yet, anyway. Instead, it is my pleasure and privilege to introduce Selkie’s grandparents. Meet the Smith’s, everyone!
– – – – –
I wanna thank you all again for the support on my big project last week As promised, here are some pictures of my one hundred sculptures:
My local crafts store had a 50% off sale on balsa wood planks and rods, so I grabbed a fistful of each, and somewhere I got the idea to make japanese kanji out of them. So I googled 100 different kanji, and with wood, glue, and india ink made these little items. Some of them are missing penstrokes, but I doubt the teacher will examine all 100 sculptures in that level of detail. XD
Here is a close up view of one of my favorites, held in my hand for size reference.
It’s nice to meet Selkie’s grandparents. Also, those statues look great!
He doesn’t recognize his parents’ voices…? xD Still, good to meet them! Love Selkie so much.
I know!
little bit of constructive criticism here but you made his fist in panel 1 look like he had one too many joints on his index finger please dont take offense i just looked a little weird though i would let you know
btw the sculptures look really cool good job
You are absolutely correct, thank you for telling me. Should be fixed in a sec.
Oh my god Todd’s dad in the last panel made me literally bust out laughing! Tater salad cannon!
Is it just me or do Todd’s parents look like “little people” (sorry if that’s not the PC term anymore) in panels 3 and 4?
i think it is vertically challenged people, and in the last pannel you see they are as tall as todd
so hears my question who are you going to kill for all that time you did on those sculptures?-laughs-
nice to come home after a “weird” and money killing day to fine your parents raiding your fridge……
who does he think he was telling to get out? theres a story in his threat.
Oh yes:) I think Andi is some ex or someone who won’t leave Tod alone for whatever reason.
Not what I was expecting great twist.
His parents! Yay! 😀
Also, your project looks great! 😀
Get you some little label stickers and print out the names of all your characters and put them over your written ones. Also, use a block and some sandpaper and get those top backing edges super crisp. I want you to get an A on your work, they are absolutely beautiful.
I know y’all have missed me.
Anyhow, Is Todd an adopted kid? No offense if he isn’t but I kinda have mah suspicions, thinking of the flashback of little beat-up kid Todd while back.
Congrats to you on finishing your sculptures! They look really good! I probably don’t have the determination to do something like that– No, I don’t have the determination. 😛 I hope you get a good grade! 🙂
I was thinking that he must be adopted too. I mean it’s fairly obvious his parents have a darker skin then him, and likely on purpose too. It would also explain his flashback to little Todd when he was thinking about Selkie.
I kind of assumed it from a while ago, when he was thinking about his own childhood. Seemed to me that he once knew what it was to be unwanted.
Like, wow. You’ve got a lot more patience to working with small items than I do. Great job.
Sorry, not comments on the comic.
Well played. Wouldn’t have thought to do 100 similar sculptures.
sculptures remind me of this
http://www.globalmountainsummit.org/images/terracotta-warriors/terracotta-warriors-8.jpg
Ha! That’s awesome:) I remember reading of those guys a long time ago. Very cool stuff.
Oh man if I had had 2 or 3 weeks and some cheap clay, terra cotta warriors would have been a great idea.
Great job on the sculptures! Oh its only his parents. Really liking this story.
Aww, and here I was all ready for “Stupid Todd!” jokes coming from a redheaded girl made of 100% tsun and 0% dere. Can’t complain about the delivery, though-I was just as surprised as Todd was! Great job!
I guess adoption runs in the family?
Oh my God, that’s so wonderful! Adoption runs in the family. That’s excellent!
The sculptures look great, and so does the comic! I wonder what the grandparents will think of Selkie!
Those are awesome sculptures and a great idea. Wouldn’t have thought not to make them from clay LOL. That is clever! She better ‘A’ you, man! This is a neat new twist to Todd and probably explains one reason why he got to adopt Selkie, coming from having parents not of his particular ethnicity:)
Well, in defense of us who assumed it was Andi, that was Todd’s guess too. Looking forward to seeing his parents’ first meeting with Selkie, though I hope for his sake she isn’t a surprise to them. MY mother would have my hide as a keepsake if I dropped a bomb like that…
Love the sculptures: a great way to fulfill the assignment without any rules-lawyering, which in my experience rarely goes over well with teachers.
Some people did crazy rules-lawyering, and she still seemed to like the sculptures. I wish i could ask their grades. 😡
Ahhhh… good ol’ FERPA – you can’t get other people’s grades from generic posted grades lists anymore. Well, there’s always your last resort – ask the students themselves … 😀
Out of curiosity, i must know: what was the craziest example of rules lawyering you saw?
One guy made a sculpture of the number 100 out of sculpy, but with each number decorated to look like a monster. 1 was a red and yellow snake, the 00s had mouths with fangs and claws, etc.
And one person took 100 army men out of a bucket and glued them together into a single large army man.
I must wonder what their grades were…
I do understand why adoption is the obvious assumption but it is technically possible for two people of color to have a white child, it’s called recessive genes. It can and does happen when a family has mixed ancestry.
It does make more sense to the story if he was adopted, but as a person of mixed heritage I am the only person of color in my family while all of my relatives are white. I was not adopted, (though I was constantly asked if I was as a child) and even though my mother is white and I am dark skinned I look just like her.
I’ve heard of this, actually. I saw a news report once of a caucasian couple in England who had two fraternal twin boys, one white-skinned and one dark-skinned. You never know what genetics will come in to play.
There has been a few documented cases of this. My favorite is the family that this happened to *twice*! http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20249682,00.html
The older sisters are clearly sisters- almost the same face shape with different skin tones.
Can you list the colors and stuff you used for the Selkie sackboy? I would love to make one but cant find the light blue you used.
I tried to make a level to share the costume pieces, but they don’t seem to allow that anymore. Strange…
But anyway, Sack Selkie is made of the Blue Denim material (it looks lighter than it really is because my camera distorted some of the colors), with Button Eyes, a Red Wig that was painted a Paint Splodge – Dark Brown sticker, Scary Fangs (mouth section), Fins (feet section, painted with a Roundel – Teal sticker), and a Sofie Dress.
Also it could be that he’s just an Albino if he’s not adopted.
Oh, and his dad is more than light skinned enough to potentially have some white ancestry.
Um… also, what happened to the groceries that he was carrying? Just curious.
He set them down in the hallway.
Love the sculptures! Excellent idea for sure. And yes, they also put me in mind of the Terracotta Army statues – especially in the box, it was very remiscent of the in-ground photos I’ve seen. Hope you got a good grade.
As soon as I saw that these were Todd’s parents, I also thought “oh! Todd’s adopted too!” As Pashakitty mentioned – it fits in great with the story line. It actually fills in a lot of question marks.
Dave. Thanks a bunch. I saw your link to “David Carmichael is Going to Hell” under your “Links to Good Things”. I am now addicted to yet another great comic. :-/
Those sculptures are so cool! Great idea!
Also, whoa, Todd’s adopted too? That totally explains thing!
I SO look forward to Thursdays and Selkie! Thank You!
I think that it is hilarious that Todd ‘forgot’ that you can NOT leave meat/fish groceries in the car! And I’m betting that they spent a LOT of time at that smanshy shoe store.
For those that thought that too much happened in one day;
Lets see- Adoption day- come home, see the place. Go through a drive-thru. Go clothing shopping. Go food shopping. Go shoe shopping. Come home.
Nope, sounds like a normal day with kids, and they didn’t even go to school/sports/music lessons!
Wow, really nice sculptures. I thought you had to do 3D modeling sculptures, but this is far more impressive!
Congratulations! A hell of an idea and something quite awesome.
All I can think now is how cute it is that this family is so colorful now between Todd, his parents, and Selkie.
Hopefully we will get some sort of explanation about the earlier, verbally abusive memory sequence. This father doesn’t seem the type to traumatize Todd.
I also write a comic about a selkie, so when I saw the title of the comic I HAD to read it.
I absolutely love this comic~! I read through the whole archive today. It’s such an awesome story 🙂
Looking forward to more~
So Tod was adopted too I love that twist XD
Love the comic!
I was wondering what Selkie thinks of the movie Finding Nemo?
To be honest, I haven’t seen it myself, so I have no idea what Selkie’s opinion would be on it. From what I can tell from trailers and general pop culture knowledge though, I think she would enjoy it.
HE’S ADOPTED TOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Your artwork has improved a LOT! <3
Love the sculptures!!!
(I can only remember the Kanji for God, because I spent soooo long doing it in Okami!)
Loving the comic as always!!! 😀
I love the comic.
When are we going to see Andi?
Or find out what happened between Todd and her(him)?
The mysteries concerning Andi will become clearer in time. 🙂
I am a Japanese major. So seeing the sculptures made me SQUEEEEEEEEE quite a bit.
They’re awesome. 😀
That takes me back to my parent’s unannounced visit at my first apartment. I think they had a similar argument over Dad eating my lasagne.
Shit, you made me guess.
I could have sworn it was Andi and …why does he have black parents?
Re-archiving today, and the pictures of the sculptures are broken.
