That bit of immaturity aside…. it’s killing me with curiosity exactly how the bow is protecting her. Tracking device? Some kind of crazy magic shielding?
My guess is the bow keeps her from being tracked by those radical clans that want her dead. its like a perception field it just distorts her signiture enough that they cant find her.
So I guess the cliffhanger is what the last part translates to.
P. S. You probalby allready confirmed this but her moms name is Plo Quar.
P. P. S. My second guess about the cliffhanger is Triceratops is dead.
I figger the last bit is “Nei Li detected. End of transmission.” The “aw crap” was when the message turned off, and she could not see/hear Mom any more.
I suspect that now she will be taking the bow off and leaving it farther and farther away, trying to get the alert to come back, so she can see Mom again. Like a non-custodial parent saving the answering machine tape when their kid calls, just to hear her voice again.
If the device could detect whether Nei Li was nearby or not, then why did it play the recorded message in a loop while she was NOT there, and then stop after detecting that she’d returned? She might have missed the first part of the message!
Something weird I just noticed if you click the link to plo quar’s appearances in the comic, in the first one with her name listed in it you don’t see her featured at all. Though I’m wondering if she’s possibly one of the background people in the scene. I can see someone with light purple skin and brown hair that could possibly her…
Hey Dave, since you’ve put a lot of effort into creating this fictional species, have you given any thought on how the Sarnothi speak underwater? So far we’ve only heard the language spoken through the medium of air, but surely the Sarnothi communicate underwater as well.
They speak underwater using vocal cords that are similar in structure to a humans, but stronger and more powerful and built for underwater transmittal. Sarnothi naturally broadcast their voices more than humans do as a result of this. Those who have become accustomed to living among humans (like the De’Madieas and Selkie) don’t do this as pronouncedly, though.
The sounds and components of tensei come strongly from the vocal cords and from unconscious membrane adjustments amongst them. They don’t use the tongue as much as humans do and some sounds that would sound wonky underwater in the real world (like “S” and “Th” sounds) are somewhat approximated when written out phonetically such as seen here.
Basically their closest sound-alikes to sounds humans make by manipulating airflow across the teeth, Sarnothi roughly equate by manipulating throat membranes.
Todd’s feelings about this must be rather mixed. He’s definitely a committed parent, and doesn’t really care how or why Selkie came to be in the orphanage except as to how that affects her well-being.
Yet here’s the image and voice of her biological parent, who Selkie still has strong memories of. That’s got to be frustrating and worrisome for him even if it helps Selkie connect with her past.
Yes, Nei Li, you are Sarnothi, so you are a predator. You hunt, and you chase, and you kill. That’s what you do.
But there is one thing worse than being a predator. And that’s being an omnivore. We are human, and we are omnivores. That means we eat ANYTHING that shows up in front of us. If you are in front of us, you are potential food. Get used to it, because it’s sure not going to change.
My dear Nei Li … no matter how bad you think you are … you are not that bad. Best proof of that is how much worse things can get. And holy shit can they ever get worse.
First!

And I am going to make the sad guess that triceratops is belly up 🙁

Nope that’s not a mistake. She’s the person behind Marta.

I was wondering about this myself, actually. I hope Dave has an answer for us! 🙂
Ooops, thought I responded to this already. Please see above!

Sergeant Schlock says that is ridiculous. http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2011-02-26
My guess is the sarnothi from the previous scene pinched the bow.
*reads next comic* OK, nevermind, I was wrong.
I think triceratops transformed due to the resonance magic, he looks different in the second to last panel.
