I’ve been given a chance to share some Fan Art today! Miasaki666 posted 4 Selkie drawings on her DeviantArt page. Check them out!
It will forever be one of my biggest regrets that I did not use Panel 6's Selkie as this strip's Sneak Preview. ;P
To be fair, Selkie has a point. If she doesn’t have a preference, it doesn’t really matter.
Grandma has a point too though. Selkie is only 8 years old though so maybe when she’s older she could decide? Seems like a big decision to put on a child that young. Maybe if her family changes them out occasionally she’ll eventually decide she prefers one over the other. Or she could surprise them all and decide on a completely different name eventually. One that includes “Evil Genius” perhaps. 😉
Well. I have three adopted siblings and the oldest was close to Selkie’s age when they were asked if they wanted their names changed when they were adopted. To be fair, it was their last names, but they did know they wanted to change them.
I have met other children who were adopted at a younger age than Selkie who did opt to change her first name from “Heather” to “Meghan”. It depends on the parent and child. But younger children can actually choose to change their names so long as the parents agree.
Though, considering many people use a middle name, she could actually use both and call herself “Selkie Nei Li Smith”. It’s not that uncommon.
“Avoidance” is an adult problem, if she doesn’t mind being called either, what’s the diff? One can be a nickname.
I just reread this whole comic series so I could understand the story better, kinda changed my opinion about stuff, kinda.
At first, I thought Selkie was stabbing her granny at panel 2…had to look a bit closer ;P
Me too 🙂
i request a love interest! possibly that Suko boy, or some kid that wants to do experiments like finding out what kind of poison her saliva is…
…or something more orriginal
Urgh no, no love interests. I know kids around that age (usually a bit older) can get their first crushes, but we don’t know how Selkie’s species developes on that front.
Other than that, “kids in love” is an overused plot twist in stories. Damn near made me go off Sandra and Woo back then.
Did make me go off Sandra and Woo, not so much because it was ‘kids in love’ but because those kids in love were acting like college students in love. Turned my stomach.
LOL! I had just written a short rant about how the authors of comics featuring grade school kids seem to have a bad memory of what life was like before hormones, often having them “dating” at age eight, and otherwise behaving like young adults, only shorter. I ended up not posting the rant (in part because I couldn’t find as many actual examples as I expected), and then I came over to read Selkie, and found this discussion.
…And besides the “boys/girls are ICKY” mindset of the current age group, the little boy is significantly younger than Selkie. But back when he was first depicted (in a bonus sketch), I wondered whether the comic was going to skip forward across time and have them become an item when they’re both teens.
“I’ve BENE given a chance to share…”? Dave, Dave, Dave. Tsk tsk.
As for the name thing, I don’t see that as “avoidance”. Some people are picky about what you call them. I know a “Joseph”, and if you call him Joe or Joey he ignores you, because his name is not Joe or Joey, it is Joseph. But I also know people that live the “I don’t care what you call me, as long as you don’t call me late for dinner” thing. If she likes both names, and is comfortable with both names, that’s fine.
my father and his siblings never used their first names. gerald went by andy, virginia went by jessie, etc. in fact, when i went to one aunt’s funeral i had trouble finding the right room because i didn’t recognize the name on the plaque.
Apropos of nothing, I did my first MLP fanfic, guest-starring Selkie. (All characters copyright their respective holders.)

Dear God Yes.
The situation of the kidnapped girls had me worried at first, then the ninja-kicks acid spit and stone statues happened and I was fine. XD
*Immediately adds to Read Later list, which is fairly long-ish*
You know this could easily be solved by having one be a nickname and the other be her official name.
Mom named me and my brother out of a hope to not have any nicknames. Then her best friend, on both occasions, immediately came up with one: “Leah” for Alethia and “Matt” for Madison. (Mom gave up and named her third Daniel.)
I’ve always loved nicknames, and was fine with Leah until I realized, somewhere in my early teens, that I was never getting called by my real name – and I consider Alethia to have a beautiful sound and cadence to it, so I immediately went back to just Alethia. So there is a downside to nicknames sometimes… but I still like a name that serves for multiple nicknames (my current favorite being “Nathaniel,” which gets Nat, Nate, Nathan, and possibly odder ones like Thaniel and Yel).
Other than that, I’ve chosen a Japanese name in college (“Mari,” which means “truth” – aletheia being Koine Greek for “truth”), gotten my name mispronounced and misspelled SO many times (to the point where I got an honorable mention on a site for people named Adora who kept running into the same problem), and then went on to have my online identity be something people have trouble spelling and pronouncing (sigh).
My favorite nickname was probably “Lether,” which my college art teacher called me (because no one had ever called me it before), and next to that “Mimiya” and various other distortions from my young nieces and nephews. And I’ll never forget the time I learned that a classmate, whose native language lacks the “th” sound, thought my real name was Alice.
My mom uses my full name, my friends use a nickname, my siblings use a childhood nickname, my clients use my last name. In Taiwan I have a different name completely. I’m not seeing a problem here.
That’s similar to how I do it. I have an Official formal name, a family/childhood nickname and an adult friends nickname. Of course, going by what I just said, pretty much everyone in my rheumatologist’s office is de facto family, so there some overlap in nicknames.
Sometimes my mom would run through all her children’s names. “Hey Dave, Michael, Janet, Susan…whichever kid you are…”
My Dad does it, too. Once he even ran through all his kid’s names (by ascending age) before finally getting to his wife’s.
Hahaha, mine did that too, and my grandpa would sometimes add in his own kids names (my dad and aunt) in the process.
My mom does that too, only she also adds in the names of her grandchildren.
I think every parent with more than one kid does that. Once while trying to call my sister, my mom managed to get through all the other kids and the dog’s name before finding the right one!
When I was younger my father used to run through my name, my brothers name and my uncle’s name (in varying order) before he got the right one. We never did it, but we were considering getting T-shirts printed with our correct names, with the other two above crossed out.
My parents, after they have run through all of our names to find the right one, will often tack on: “Fred, George, Billy Bob, whatever your name is!”
My dad does the same with any combination of the names of my sister, my nephew, my CAT, our old family cat, and me.
For whatever reason, I have had a disproportionate number of friends and acquaintances who were born in the U.S. to immigrant parents.
I have to say there was a strong tendency to have two names; one in the language of their homeland and one in English, and which name they went by depended on what language they were speaking.
So I really wouldn’t find it strange at all for Selkie to just use both names.
There’s something weirdly cute about Selkie eating a raw fish like it was corn on the cob.
By “not chosing” she’s sticking with Selkie if that’s her current legal name. Unless she wants to change her name to include both then not picking is not an option.
Does it look like Selkie is a different color (lighter?) in this comic? Seems more light turquoise than periwinkle. Is there significance to that? (eg: getting sick)
I suspect being against a darker brick background could be giving that illusion, but no she’s using her standard coloring.
You could fillet it…
Love the fan art!
I like her attitude. A rose by any other name would taste just as bad.
