Gotta go outside the box, sometimes.

No fan art today, but I have something school work related I am ridiculously proud of I wanna share with the world. Hope you all don’t mind. 😀
I am a graphic design student at the University of Illinois (Springfield), and in one of my digital design classes we had to do a Celebrity Portrait project. I chose Fairuza Balk for my subject matter.
Only took like three weeks (between other stuff). ._.
Today's edition of the Secret Commentary is empty, because Dave failed to come up with something for it.
Selkie’s facial expressions in all panels: win. Her reaction in last 2 panels: EPIC WIN!
Aww man I’m loving this. And I agree with Roy, really awesome facial expressions.
HOLY MOOSE ON TOAST. That is an AWESOME portrait! I love the colors and the hat’s bands.
Oh, and the facial expressions in the comic amuse me. The very last panel’s emphasis on Selkie’s teeth was particularly nice.
I have to agree with Roy here. EPIC WIN. Yes indeedy. Also, holy craps, Springfield IL? Eerily close to me, lol. Wicked portrait though, Fairuza rocks my socks. ^.^
Love how Dave handled this! Selkie’s entering a whole new world.
That portrait is AMAZING. I love Fairuza Balk. I think she has such an interesting beauty and a presence you can’t forget. The Craft is one of my favorite corny 90’s movies.
Holy crap, you live close to me, not like really close, but close enough. That’s what spurred me to finally comment. I’ve been reading Selkie religiously, it’s one of my favourite webcomics.
lol, she’s just looks so cute with her little mood swings.
But I feel sorry for any shoe saleman that pinches her feet with how big her bite is in that last panel.
Let the Great Shoe Hunt commence.
… GO!
I was hoping they’d get her larger shoes, or sandals that don’t have to go between toes! Selkie’s so cute in panel 5.
And i love the class project pic! It reminds me of Patrick Nagel’s work, But with color!
Hahaha, oh I love it, this is exactly how you handle the kind of child I used to be. =)
Awesome, that 5th panel! LOL the whole thing!
You should be wary, hunting for shoes is a dangerous business. Between having to fight for the last pair and finding the ones you love in the wrong size, it can be harrowing. But her face is amazing. Her eyes just shrunk!! And the portrait is beautiful. I love it. Her eye sort of pierces my soul….
Great portrait and NOBODY THOUGHT OF A LARGER SHOE SIZE???
I’m kinda surprised nobody thought of sandals either…
Honestly? I never considered sandals either. ._. I’m just not much of a sandal person, I guess. But when I picture it, I imagine Selkie’s toes would hang over the front edge if she wore sandals.
Tailor time!
Panels 5 and 6 are epic win.
Aahhh! I love her teeth 😀 😀 😀
Can’t resist a bad pun: “Gotta go outside the SHOEbox, sometimes.”
Just read through the whole thing start to now and i love it. I read over a dozen web comics and this makes a baker’s dozen 😀
Oh, and, out of context, her expression in the last panel is really kinda scary. like shes gonna bite his arm off or something lol
…And here I was thinking custom-fitted moccasins might be the best bet.
I’m surprised some sort of comfy shoe-like alternative, such as adjusted flip-flops, was not provided.
As an aside, has he guessed that Selkie is not quite homo sapiens?
reef-sandals-online.comI could see Selkie wearing something like these sandals… perfect for her… unusual… toes 🙂
I have unusual toes myself (they don’t really taper down toward the “pinky” toe, the end of my foot/toes is nearly squared off), and I *love* sandals like that.
YOU CANS DOS THATS?! Epic win, Selkie, m’love. *huggles her*
Ahahaha! God, I love this comic! I know exactly how she feels! I have misshapen feet due to a disability and didn’t wear shoes until I was in high school (I couldn’t fit into any shoes. And, boy, it embarrassed me!).
As a side note, Dave, do you have a banner link I could post on my webcomic?

selkiecomic.com
Indeed I do. ^^ Thanks!
(for some reason the comment keeps placing the webcomic url at the first line of the comment… just ignore it. XD
Thanks! I just love your comic and want to share it with the world. 😀 The banner is now up at http://15minbreak.blogspot.com/
Selkie’s moment of realization in panel 5 is beyond priceless.
Did no one at the orphanage know that shoes come in Narrow and Extra Narrow sizes, so Selkie’s toes wouldn’t either get pinched or hang over the ends? You don’t necessarily have to go to custom shoes; just get her long, narrow shoes for her long, narrow feet.
I live in Springfield too. Great comic by the way.
Absolutely *love* this comic! I read through it once already tonight, and I’m on my second way through. I also wanted to mention that I absolutely *ADORE* this one, both panels 5 and 6. I can practically hear Selkie’s voice in panel 6.
What about just getting open-toed sandals?
Bi-polar children, seems normal. Also not hateing on people with bi-polar, my mom has it, I may have it later.
Deep Ones and other beings who still have four limbs have wide feet. Best for swimming. Not as good as flippers or a fluked tail but the next-best-thing. Open toe will help. I’d say the only way to have a closed shoe is one of unusual make.
